I'm sorry, but even if they somehow convince me to buy an EV, I'm not gonna buy one with the word "turbo" in its name. How about we come up with new naming conventions? Call it OC, for overclocked, or something. There is no turbocharging an electric motor.
I own an EV, I love it, I think this Porsche is awesome, and I AGREE. There’s no turbocharger in the car! WTF!!! 😂 name it something else.

The other honest question I have is why would someone buy this Porsche over the Model S Plaid? The Plaid gets 50 more miles range, is pretty much the same speed exactly, and is 1/3 the price. Plus has the Supercharger network. But this is probably the wrong forum to ask.

Makes more sense than Tesla, from a marketing/aesthetic perspective
I disagree. As much as I love Porsche, Tesla is a much better match.

Apple and Tesla are both in the affordable luxury category while Porsche caters strictly to the rich. Tesla also pushes the envelope of technology which Porsche used to do but is now years behind Tesla in many regards… battery, FSD, manufacturing techniques, EV efficiency, etc.

And what other car manufacturer would have the ahem… courage… to take on a project like Cybertruck, which many experts said was an impossible feat?

Ah, the good ol’ days when Apple also used to defy the so called experts and anaysts. Now they just listen to them, only years after the fact.

I'm logging in for the first time in over a year just to say that this is one of the tackiest things Apple has done in a long, long time.

No turbos in all those i7 and i9 Intel CPUs either.

Yes, I'm sure Porsche will change their long-standing naming conventions because of you.

If you're willing to buy Apple products with arbitrary Pro, Mini, Air, etc. in their names, I think you'll get over turbo.
People say EVs are now basically phones with wheels, so I wouldn’t be surprised if those naming conventions made their way over. Taycan Pro 😄

Did experts really say the Cybertruck was impossible to build or are we just repeating something Musk claimed they said?

“Once in a while, a product comes along that is rare, that is, once every 5 to 10 years something really special, an unusual product comes along and we will remember those special moments when some rare, very rare product comes along that is seemingly impossible. That people said was impossible, that experts said was impossible, and this is one of those times. we have a car here that experts said was impossible, that experts said would never be made.

– Elon Musk

I know people said it would be expensive and hard to build (and they were right),

but being expensive to build or hard to build ≠ impossible to build.

I don't recall reading or hearing so-called experts saying it would be impossible to build. Can you point me to where they said that? Thanks.

So, no turbocharger for you? Is it just the name that bugs you? Because it isn’t arbitrary. It’s descriptive.

And hint? No EV has a turbocharger. That’s a carburetor thing.

At these prices, I think you see less cross shopping on specs and more on emotional response. I imagine someone chooses a Taycan over a Tesla for the same reason someone buys a 911 over a Corvette. They want a Porsche. Value is pretty far down the list at this level. :)

Apple would partner with Toyota. Maybe Volkswagen. There’s no way they have anything to do with Tesla.

Porsche: European company founded as a design consulting firm and slow to embrace new-tech EVs; founder who worked his way up through his industry; cockpits stubbornly festooned with buttons; offers scads of models and voluminous options lists
Tesla: young Silicon Valley-adjacent company that was an upstart in its field and based on new tech; founder famous for being iconoclastic and demanding; infamous for removing every feasible button from controls and a poor choice of charging port location; product line was until recently a 2x2 grid (mainstream/“pro”, sedan/SUV)

Marketing strategy, I don’t know. Everything else…
Oh for sure Tesla is more similar, and this will never happen, it’s just me dreaming out loud as a fan of both companies :p

Apple is also slow to adopt new technologies though (recently). They take their time and do things right, just as Porsche did with the Taycan. I like that philosophy. Apple didn’t have the first mp3 player or smart phone or VR headset, but they have the best and innovated in key ways with each of them

I was referring I guess to their up-market demographic, reputation for quality, and slow refinement of iconic designs rather than major changes. The iPhone is the 911 of the smartphone world imo

Also their exterior styling seems Apple-like to me. It’s relatively restrained and not over-stylized, but still passionate and emotive. When I see a white Porsche it’s what I envision an Apple car to be

Porsche SE owns VAG which owns Porsche AG, if they partnered with them they could have a range of products from mass market to uber luxury. But yeah I’m just daydreaming here, I know it would never happen

Tesla seems more like a “move fast and break things” type of company though, whereas Apple is careful and methodical, and cares deeply about quality. They don’t rush things to market, they bring their own version of it a few years later once they’ve tested and perfected it, like Porsche did with the Taycan
