Uh oh. The slippery slope. The answer to hate speech is more speech. Reasoned, conscientious speech. The problem with censoring hate speech is, who decides what is hate speech? Progressives have demonstrated time and time again that they consider hate speech to be any speech that does not conform to their world view. It’s mob rule, where only the most pure of virtue signallers are immune to a Twitter ban, a Facebook suspension, or a Google blacklisting. So schizophrenic and capricious are the rules that even the most ardent progressives are sometimes hoist with their own petard.
The value of truly free speech was once taught in schools, but has now been replaced with a new orthodoxy based upon every individual's right to never have their ideas challenged, to never feel the sting of any offense. Objective truth has fallen by the wayside; hyperbole is the new truth. Anyone who disagrees is a sexist, a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, and must be silenced, driven from the public forum, from their jobs, from their homes.
Apple once, under the leadership of Steve Jobs, avoided overtly political involvement. Everyone knew Jobs was a liberal, and that Apple was a liberal company, but as a corporate entity, Apple was happy to serve all ideologies without applying its own provincial leftist ideology. But Steve Jobs is gone now, and Tim Cook has demonstrated since day one that his intention was to take Apple down the same ideologically puritanical path as Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the rest. How very sad for free, independent thought.
