According to the Bible, yes (That is my source of morality). It specifies what right and wrong behavior is, and that the struggle against said behavior is to be undertaken.

Interesting.... my sense of morality is just... well.... morality!
No fear of god needed to be good to the world... just the conviction that doing good to the world might result in the world being good to you!

To those who state "'Why should I care?":

You obviously take your heterosexuality and its social conveniences for granted. Living day to day, you don't have to worry about being beaten, ostracized, dismissed by your family, have the highest suicide rates and depression, earn less, have less access to better career opportunities - unless you marry someone from the opposite sex and play along with everyone else, denied a chance at happiness. This is important because YOU take it for granted.

What if the roles were reversed? What if heterosexuality was frowned upon? What if you had to marry a member of the same sex, have intercourse with them, raise children, pretend to be happy, just to keep your job, feel safe, not be threatened? Could YOU do it?

It is a big deal. Grow up, move on, deal with it. Many have to put up with heterosexuality thrown in their faces daily, in movies, books, commercials, on the street - suck it up, buttercup, and move on.

You have succinctly defined that word "privilege" that gets bandied about. The people who are going on about how "he should keep it to himself" or "why should I care?" are those cisgendered heterosexual privileged. The world caters to you and your privilege.

You don't have to worry about being thrown out of your home for being straight. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00224490409552240#.VFJo_oeMiFI

You don't have to worry about being fired from your job because you were born the correct gender, or loving someone of the opposite gender. http://www.upworthy.com/29-states-can-fire-you-for-being-gay-is-your-state-one-of-them

You don't have an industry out there trying to "correct" you for loving someone of the opposite gender.

This, again, is why it's important to have powerful people being open and out, it gives hope to the gay teens (and adults) that you can overcome discrimination and hate to become something more.

Oh so true .... because wikipedia can be edited by us ... the bible on the other hand, the book which we are 'not allowed to doubt as it is the true word of god' is only based on translation upon translation upon selection upon translation upon censorship upon hearsay of word of mouth!

The bible is protected by God

Cisgender is when you identify your gender with your biological sex.

I.e. My biological sex is male, and I identify my gender as male, so I am cisgender.

There's also transgender (biologically x but Identify as y) and agender (biologically x but identify as no gender).

I've never been able to find an answer, but maybe you can help me.

Where did the 'cis' come from? Is it some obscure greek or latin prefix I've never heard of, or what?

People get so worked up over what amounts to a fairly unimportant social construct.

I'm totally for personal freedom.

but he was himself. and he was open with the people that really matter to him.

What is wrong is this notion that sexuality is THE defining factor of a person and that we are owed an answer by our public figures because of some nasty notion that they gave up all basic rights to be rich, famous, etc. Being gay or straight doesn't make him a nicer person or a smarter one. Its just a single checkbox among many things.

No, but it does give LGBTQIA kids (and adults) an example of someone overcoming social stigmas and discrimination. Someone to look up to.

But you should not need to be told that. Gay rights have become the 'civil rights' of this decade / era.

As much as being female, being of an ethnic minority, or having a disability should not limit your ability to do great things in life - it should just be taken for granted the being gay is only a 'part' of what makes up a person - it doesn't and shouldn't 'define' you completely ........

You're right. You *shouldn't* need to be told that. Unfortunately many people are still born into and grow up in environments and communities where exactly the *opposite* message is drilled into them, day in and day out.

Much of the Bible has been proven to be in line with history:)Fact!

You can say the same thing about Game of Thrones.

There really was a wall that kept out the northern Barbarians. There really was a great chain constructed in a harbour to destroy attacking ships. That doesn't mean white walkers are real though. ;)

The Bible is an example of accounts of some real historical events (for credibility) being mixed up with folk stories, while at the same time skewing facts to promote the views of the authors.

For instance, there is a real salt formation that looks a little bit like a woman looking over a lake, that clearly inspired the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The problem is it's way too big to be an actual woman who got turned into salt, but you can see how the myth developed over time, eventually becoming turned into 'history' cough , by the authors of the Old Testament.

A similar thing happens where the Bible talks about 'the beast' coming from the sea, but it's not talking about the devil, it's talking about the Roman invaders. It's worded that way for anti-Roman propaganda purposes... and very effective it was too.

Being gay is not a choice.

Engaging in homosexual intercourse is.

I think they were referring to the latter.

Having the inclination and desire to kill people doesn't make me a murderer (in the eyes of the law, at least).

Killing someone does.

Big difference.

Sounds to me like the 'Guns don't kill people but people kill people' fallacy!

What is good? We're does it come from.?

I have nothing against gays as humans, but I don't care to know about it, or hear about it, or look at it. I personally think it's wrong, and the way society is "advancing" at times, makes me sick. To each their own, I guess. As I age I hate to see what else becomes acceptable in society.

What a coincidence! I have nothing against bigots as humans, but I don't care to know about them, hear about them, or look at them. I personally think they are wrong, and the way society is regressing at times, makes me sick. To each their own, I guess. As I age I hate to see what else becomes acceptable in society.

Nevertheless, I'm going to man up and put up with these losers. Because they're here, and that's life.

Because we exported some of the most puritanical and vociferously religious rejects from Europe to the Americas.

Sorry but you are stuck with the descendants now!

Thanks #

(I miss the UK, and Germany, and Spain and ...)

So it's the new gay lexicon term for "straight."

Actually, no. Gender (biological or identified) is not the same thing as sexual orientation.

A person who is biologically male, but identifies as male, and is sexually attracted to women is "straight". That much is pretty straight forward in the common lexicon.

But what about:
  • A person who is biologically male, but identifies as female, and is sexually attracted to women, or
  • a person who is biologically female, but identifies as male, and is sexually attracted to women?
