The only thing you all can reply to is when he said they're magical? Really? So when he said the cable pulls down on the headphones, and by cutting it off it helps them stay in place, there's no "ohhh that makes sense" or even "that's BS! Here's why!" That's seriously pathetic. Mindless hate because it's Apple, that's all it is. If you (everyone who's avoiding a response because they have none) provided some constructive criticism, positive or negative, it would at least be respectable.
My main issure with all bluetooth earbuds (that I have tried) is that they do come out when working out. Sometimes it is little by little. But they do. Granted, all had cords, but they were not being tugged since they are corded together, not to the phone.

Obviously my criticism is based on the gym and outdoor activities, but this is also almost exclusively the setting I use buds like this in... would rarely if ever use them anywhere else. The buds I have now and prefer are corded, cost me $30, and actually just now got replaced after four years; they went through the washer at least for times and the dryer three. The third time in the dryer they died (though the volume up and down died over a year ago). Not at all a plug for a brand (which is why I don't mention them, but will if you want me to), but I just don;t see myself benefitting from these. And certainly not at that price, though I am fully aware of why these would essentially have to cost more than my wired buds.

I'm looking forward to these. I'll buy them. They are cheaper then the Bragi ones. And, I think he (Tim Cook) is right. When I use the EarPods, it is usually the wires that seem to pull them out of my ears. To combat this I use these cheap little silicone earhooks designed to fit them I found on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Earhoox-EarPods-Compatible-iPhone-White/dp/B00L1GWZWI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473833012&sr=8-1&keywords=earhoox+for+earpods

They work pretty well, and will probably work on the Airpods if necessary.

Apple can have my money (more of it) in late October when they are released!
Bragi has a version launching for $150 ($120 preorder). I have no idea how good these will be, Just figured I would point out they are coming out with something cheaper than these airpods since you mentioned it... I believe there was an article here on them too.

I definitely want to try them out but I have heard a lot of bad things about connection drops. :( The biggest omission (for me) seems to be the use in water; definitely not worth the $150 premium, to me, but it would have been nice.

airpods:

1. you must recharge them
2. they cost $159
3. They look silly on ears
4. you loose one, you have to buy a new set.

If apple wants to be evolutionary as it claims, then it would have included them with iphone 7. Its one more gadget we have to worry about charging and not losing.

I'm an admitted fan of wired headphones. Serious question though... Exactly how many things do I need to charge before I lose my mind?

Off the top of my head, my wife and I have:

2 iPhones (charge every day)
2 Apple Watches (every day)
2 Surface Pro 4s (every day)
2 Kindle Voyages (every month)
Portable battery pack I need to charge to top off the phones (weekly)
2 Sonicare toothbrushes (2x a month)
Electric razor (weekly)
Canon 5Dmk iv DSLR (have many batteries)
Canon C100 video camera (have many batteries)
Wireless desktop keyboard/mouse (every 2-6 months)
PS4 controllers (weekly)
Bluetooth speaker (leave it plugged in in the kitchen)

It's getting ridiculous. I'm traveling with large powerstrips. Granted, I'm a photographer and cinematographer, so I travel pretty complicated no matter what, but I really appreciate devices that pull power from other devices, or can make it through a whole trip without recharging.

Also, I'm drowning in a sea of dongles, adaptors, and external computer peripherals.

The reason I've been on the iPhone since the 3G, even though I'm on Windows, is because I like my phone to be the least complicated thing in my bag. Or the SECOND least. The least complicated is my wired pair of headphones that always work, never die, and work with my phone, my Surface, my cameras, and even plug into my PS4 controller for loud gaming at night.

I'm not anti-iPhone 7 really. If I gotta use another adaptor, I gotta use another adaptor. But I also don't think battery powered headphones are "magical" either. Both have their inconveniences.

Pretty cool. I'd wait until they had a lightning cable option, so I wouldn't have to bother with the adapter.

I also like the idea of using the iPhone's battery to power the ANC on a less bulky pair of headphones.

My only concern about using lightning to power heaphones with ANC, it's gonna drain the phone battery. Sometimes it's better to have a battery in the headset, depending on how well your battery lasts the whole day of course

i think that's a pretty shortsighted view. think of a phone in 1995.. it did exactly one thing. think of a phone now.

headphones could morph to similar or greater impact than the phone.

it could be the thing that gets the computers on our bodies instead of in our pockets. that's what my point was
...not glasses.. not VR goggles.. not a watch.. headphones.

two different ports, one of which is entirely redundant?

the idea is to eliminate all the ports.. that's going to happen relatively soon. the plans are already there.. they'd get rid of the lighting port right now if they could. they can get rid of the 3.5 now because they can.. so they did.

technology moves forward.. always. i think a lot of people just don't recognize it while it's happening.

3D audio? that'd probably be sweet.
but it's not really a question of what i want my headphones to do.

what i'd like is an augmented reality hardware that works well and something i'd be willing to have on my body.
i personally think it would be sweet to have the hardware in the realm of contact lenses but i think we'll see it first (and soon) in headphones.

i'll ask you again in 10 years ;)
[doublepost=1473825734][/doublepost]

huh? did you listen to the actual words Jobs was saying?
"the imac is sheik.. not geek!"

can you imagine if tim cook said that?! this forum would explode..

for reference, here's what sheik means:
Slang. a man held to be masterful and irresistibly charming to women.

even if actual word was used in the roasting, chic.. same thing.

Let's see what the future brings. While I just want my heaphones to give me the best audio experience, I'm sure there will be some innovation . Problem, 10 years ago....the manufacturing process has improved, but the basic principle behind audio has not changed. I'm not sure another 10 years will make much difference .

FYI, over 10 years ago I have a set of Sony headphones that replicated 5.1 surround sound, they can achieve 3D audio now, a digital connector makes no difference . Fundementally audio tech has no changed, limiting factor is our analogue ears

AirPods would be good if not for;

-Short battery life
-Expense
- and the fact you look like you've pulled the cables our your EarPods and think they still work ( insane )

Also a ping feature could work through the earpieces. A high pitched sound should still be noticeable even at slightly reduced volume. You could select L , R , Both.

Charging box is cool - would be ways better, if could load watch as well (by placing watch on top of it :)
but I would never wear those wireless "poodle ear style" things. never!

I cant't remember a single time in my life when I played music in my ears non stop for more then 2-3 hours! Having a case which charge them once you take them off tour ears is handy. For me the 4-5 hours battery life and the ability for them to charge while they are in my pocket is a non issue. I am quite looking forward to buy these. I already use BT earphones, Apples earphones where so bad and having to go through untangling every time I would get them out of my pockets was a pain.

Would love if these are good for running but I remain sceptical. Maybe they wont fall out on their own but when I run I myself often pull my earphones out whilst wiping my face. Also they aren't waterproof (sweat), the normal earphones that come with the iPhone can survive in the washing machine but these seem to have much more tech inside that can damage.

The noise level about the removal of the headphone jack and these new airpods reminds me of Apple's refusal to include Adobe Flash support in iOS.
It was bold, brave and the right thing to do.

Who now thinks that flash support should gone into iOS?

I bought a nice pair of bluetooth headphones over a year ago and I hate them over BT, plugged in they deliver great sound. To me it's not a failing of the headphone manufacturer but a failing of the bluetooth technology.
If Apple's W1 can deliver the same quality of sound over wireless that I get from their wired ear phones then this will be proof that they can continue to lead in their field without Jobs.

I think the only thing missing is Jobs himself and one of his "open letters", about why the audio jack had to go.

You can't compare the two, because iOS NEVER HAD FLASH SUPPORT TO BEGIN WITH. If Apple had released iOS with flash support, and then took it away, that would be different.

Also, nobody seems to care about the security implications of using a Bluetooth connection.

Too bad the AirPods fit like a tampon in my ear - the normal Apple headphones, really hurt my ear after about 5 minutes, and fall out when I'm jogging.

But you know, choice and all - nice that Tim got them to fit his ears, what about the remaining 900 million?

And before people start whining how I don't need to buy the iPhone 7 then - I know that. I'm worried about the iPhone SE2 and no headphone jack on that...

Moreover I don't trust a single word that Tim Cook utters - Steve Jobs I might disagree with, but he was rash enough that he would be unable to hide his true feelings for a product. Tim is more like a politician - towing the party line and believing his own BS.

As John Siracusa says - success hides problems. Apple will think that iPhone 7 sales are due to people loving the new Lightning headphones shoved down the consumer's throat rather than despite it...

Apple user since '97.. love apple and have all devices... but HELLO!! Apple please put a touch slider volume control on the stalk or some type of tap sequence to the AirPods to adjust the VOLUME!! without having to speak to Siri !! or dig around for your iPhone every time one wants to adjust the volume!! its ok if your running or in the open but on a packed train for example telling Siri VOLUME UP... no no! DOWN its too loud!! etc... Being wireless means being free of the phone... and if one has ever caught the London Tube you know that one needs to adj the volume ALL the time.... - peace :)

I snipped old earphones to try if they fall out, Strangely, they do not. Try it yourself. I'm more concerned about battery life. What kind of battery is in it. Can I replace it, and how long it will last?

The best Cook can hope for with this interview is a little stock rally to sell more shares into. AAPL is in a downtrend and big holders will be looking for exit points to cash out while the price is still high.

Removing the headphone jack had nothing to do with embracing new technology; it was simply a digusting move to provide Apple with another guaranteed revenue stream from a new product, the AirPods, and even the products from it's Beats subsidiary headphone maker.

People also need to consider that the AirPods, unlike like wired headphones, can not be used for many years since they have irreplaceable batteries with a limited lifespan. That means peolple who wish to use them will need to buy a new set on a regular basis once the battery lifespan starts going. Another thing you can no longer do with the AirPods is share audio since Bluetooth is only one connected device at a time. You'll have to use that unbelievably awful adapter.

Another thing to consider is that the Lightning port is awful for situations where the cable of new wired Lightning headphones are going to be constantly moving around since the Lightning plug is fixed in position, whereas a traditional headphone plug spins around. That spinning action relieves tension on the cable where it plugs in. Without that relief you are going to see a lot of tearing and fail of these new Lightning headphone cables.

Bug ridden updates, functionality that is broken and never gets fixed (select/cut/copy/paste in Safari on the iPad), features that never get significant updates (the Video app outside of picture and picture is the same as with the first iPad), unintuitive interfaces, eliminating crucial ports, and bloated new versions of iOS that cause your iDevice to bog down in order to force you to buy new hardware, is just some of the crap longtime loyal Apple customers have to deal with. I've owned a cellular iPad since the first model and I have used them everyday (typing on my mini 4 right now) but I have now had enough of Apple'a crap. This will likely be my last iPad. Perhaps the same will happen with my Mac. Tired of Apple's incomptence, games and disregard for longtime loyal users.

Why? AirPods do appear somewhat magical in the way they connect, function, and deliver content to your ears. I am thrilled Apple created this product. I'm very excited to get my AirPods. They look truly incredible.

Poor battering life requiring them to be transported in a battery case. No replaceable batteries, meaning you'll need to be replacing them when the batteries start failing, and poor fltting design and audio quality.

They are as likely to fall out as other high end Bluetooth headphones. What a silly issue. The jack downgrade is annoying but the Airpod whining is ludicrous.

Actually no that's not correct. High end Bluetooth (and corded) earphones are either over the ear or in ear and almost all the in-ear have a silicone or foam section for passive noise reduction as well as providing a better fit to avoid them coming out.

I cant't remember a single time in my life when I played music in my ears non stop for more then 2-3 hours!.

I do it all the time. I often flatten the QC20's and then have to resort to no noise cancelling - GASP! :) . The life of the battery there is 16 hours and I find I sometimes need to charge them every second or third day

It's sad how much trash talking Tim Cook is tolerated here.
And every bit of it is deserved. Under Cook we've had... well, what have we had that's actually worth writing home about? Different sized screens on the iPhone & iPad and... I dunno. Can you list a few truly great products or features? Given the poor sales you shouldn't mention the Apple Watch, but I'll even allow for it. OK, great. What else? What is driving sales of the new phone? Amazing technology? Interesting features? Nope. New colors. Wow. And one of those new colors is so amazing you need to cover it up right away or risk having it scratched up. Sheesh.

OTOH, we've had a hideous battery case, truly stupid charging port location on the mouse, a steep decline in software quality, cr@ppy 'upgrades' to the few Macs they can be bothered to push out, meddling in politics and social
issues, coma- and cringe-inducing presentations, an ill-fated shift in focus to China and India, dumbed-down apps, laughable attempts to 'connect' to the 'urban market', headline features such as Force Touch that are effectively forgotten/useless months after introduction, a castrated Apple TV, etc, etc. Oh, and let's not forget: Planet of the Apps.

Have I missed anything?

No, sorry: Tim Cook deserves every bit of opprobrium directed his way. Maybe shareholders feel differently, but I
could't care less about that. I'm interested in good products, not squeezing the most profits out of suckers.
[doublepost=1473850339][/doublepost]
Magical.. at least this fool can learn new words.

I was really getting sick of how each update is that it's the
most advanced. He still hasn't learned every company makes the most advanced version when they release a new version!
That's not even true in Apple's case: compare the 2014 Mac Mini with the 2012 version! :-\
