My oh my how low the bar has been set by Tim Cook.
Well to be fair they are very uniqe and very interesting in the way they connect, charge and work.."magical" can be interpreted as these words too.
also it's not like Apple was creating "magical" products every year prior to Tim Cook.

These cryptic, sterile, hyperbolized interviews do nothing for me. John Legere on the other hand is very entertaining. His blunt honesty is surprisingly refreshing. Corporate Apple needs to throw back a shot of Patron and loosen up.

Oh the irony. The number of people who are claiming that because the headphone jack has been around since the 1950s it should be removed, yet type their responses on a computer keyboard with a layout invented in 1872 is astounding. This is especially amusing considering the QWERTYUIOP layout used throughout the computer world today on keyboards was DELIBERATELY designed to slow down the speed of typing due to keys jamming on early typewriters. Perhaps Apple should get with the times and "invent" a faster keyboard layout too, rather than using a layout that is 144 years old?
Maybe they should, maybe they shouldn't, but for now it is time for the 3.5 mm to visit the chopping block. Apple chose to remove that port. They weren't the only manufacturer to do so and I'm sure others will follow suit. I am extremely glad they did because cords are nothing but a hassle and not convenient. Convenience is key and wireless does that for me and for many others. I've been using BT headphones for years and love the sound and the feeling of being untethered. I'm listening to a pair right now and the sound quality is on par with any wired headphones or earbuds I've ever owned over the years. If my current BT rigs already perform this well, I can only imagine what Apple's AirPods and the tech they have included in them will do for people everywhere. Hopefully it will also bleed into headphones as well only making them better. Wireless for the win. IMO.

headphones can, and will, do more than one thing.. with 3.5mm jack, it can only do one thing..

are you ignoring what i'm saying on purpose? or what?
No, you seem to think there's something more important for an audio connection to do than transmit sound, I don't.

No matter what your want the "New" adapter to do, turn your house lights on and off, warm a bagel, send emojis; you still need an analog component at some point if you actually want to listen to something, that can't be avoided, do you really think Lightning with some jury-rigged redundant DAC is such a robust solution that it's going to sweep the industry?

Apple will just have another half-baked solution in 5 years (or less).

Lastly, "It's the best iPhone we've ever made!", I should bloody think so! It's your newest phone!

I would have to look back and watch the Keynotes in the past when they announced products like the 5C and the SE but I think they only use those terms when announcing the new flagship phones. If they would have said that about the 5C or SE, I think many would argue that was false because those phones were inferior to other offerings from Apple during their respective release dates (5S and 6S/S+). Hence, it is valid in this case but not necessarily valid in all cases because their "newest" phone hasn't always been their "best" phone. IMO.

Sweats the details? They literally didn't with these because not only did they not even bother to create a new form factor that looks both less stupid and better fitting, they also didn't bother to give them water resistance. So they missed the one major target group that really benefits from Bluetooth and wireless - those working out.

I guess Tim was having a casual stroll on that treadmill, because he definitely wouldn't be running and sweating into these earpods, even though that's a standard feature on cheap Bluetooth earphones.
Actually, the guy is a fitness nut. Works out for hours every day.

They are as likely to fall out as other high end Bluetooth headphones. What a silly issue. The jack downgrade is annoying but the Airpod whining is ludicrous.

I have an iPhone and I'm currently typing this on a 2014 MBP so, I obviously understand the concept of paying for premium goods but $150.00 for wireless earbuds? Give me a freakin' break lol. I think the free wired ear buds provided with my iPhone will do.
Try £150! That really hurts!

I believe that comment constitutes a violation of forum rules.

But having witnessed Apple's actions since their inception, I will chalk it up to your being misinformed, or possibly deaf, since we are discussing audio matters here (well, you're not).

The noise level about the removal of the headphone jack and these new airpods reminds me of Apple's refusal to include Adobe Flash support in iOS.
It was bold, brave and the right thing to do.

Who now thinks that flash support should gone into iOS?

I bought a nice pair of bluetooth headphones over a year ago and I hate them over BT, plugged in they deliver great sound. To me it's not a failing of the headphone manufacturer but a failing of the bluetooth technology.
If Apple's W1 can deliver the same quality of sound over wireless that I get from their wired ear phones then this will be proof that they can continue to lead in their field without Jobs.

I think the only thing missing is Jobs himself and one of his "open letters", about why the audio jack had to go.

This can't be repeated enough. This is what I miss about Apple being a niche company. The ones who owned an Apple product were the ones who understood the company and were not only ok with these kinds of moves away from old tech but were excited to go along for the ride.

In a few years, everybody is going to wonder what took us so long and why we put up with tangled wires hanging from our ears to our phones.

Did you want to show us an example of Bluetooth wireless ear pods that do the things air pods do at a cheaper price?

Spoken with ignorance on your part.

It is well documented that Tim Cook is a fitness nut. He jogs every day. Tons of past pictures with him wearing a track suit, jogging pants, etc.

Yes because that's totally the same thing as having to use an adapter or Bluetooth to listen to music. /s

Its cause headphone can only do one thing, play analogue sounds.

If you want a heads up display, retina recognition , apple pay etc in your headphones, sure lightning cap add those.....but fundementally the "sound" component of those headphones, will always be analogue.

Can I ask, what don't current headphones do for you today, that you would like them to do in the future? Lets forget connection method for now.

For me, the headphone only has one purpose, play music.....

they used to do PR slots via CEO, at least.. there's lot's of these:

i don't think t.cook on the morning show has any actual connection to whether or not he feels the company is innovating.

I really miss Jobs doing those speeches , you can tell he really knows the product so well, its passionate about it and was involved in the development of it. None of this magical crap. Passion for the product and not the profit comes to mind, the biggest difference between Tim and Steve.
