Tim Cook last Friday visited Austin, Texas, where he announced that Apple's App Development with Swift curriculum will be offered in over 30 leading community college systems across the United States starting in 2017.

During his visit to Austin, Cook sat down with The New York Times for a breakfast interview where he discussed topics ranging from job creation and diversity to the company's efforts to introduce coding curriculum in schools and colleges.

On the topic of creating jobs, Cook said that he believes Apple has a "moral responsibility to help grow the economy" and to contribute both to the United States and to the other countries where Apple does business. That's why the company has worked so hard to introduce initiatives like Swift Playgrounds and coding in schools, in addition to making other investments like the recently announced data center coming to Iowa.

Cook also said he believes that the government has become less functional over time and that businesses have a responsibility to "step up" in areas like job creation.
"The reality is that government, for a long period of time, has for whatever set of reasons become less functional and isn't working at the speed that it once was. And so it does fall, I think, not just on business but on all other areas of society to step up."
Apple is focusing heavily on jobs related to apps and coding because it's an area where the company has already created a thriving job economy. Apple says 150,000 new jobs were created through the App Store last year, with $5 billion paid out to developers. The focus is on community colleges because Cook says "the community college system is much more diverse than four-year schools."

He went on to say that Apple is aiming to increase the racial, gender, and geographic diversity of people who are learning to code. "Right now, the benefits of tech are too lopsided to certain states," he said.

During the interview, Cook also commented on Apple's environmental efforts. Apple's upcoming data center in Iowa will run fully on renewable energy, as do all of the company's other U.S. facilities. "We're running Apple a hundred percent on renewable energy today," he said.

Cook's full interview, which covers his thoughts on running for president ("I already have a job"), his coding skills, developers creating Android apps, and more can be read over at The New York Times.

The problem seems to be people's obsession with these abstract concepts such as "the economy". PEOPLE are the economy. You don't serve the economy, you, as an individual, get a job and buy stuff. That's really it. There's no moral issue here. If the economy isn't doing well, it's almost always due to government meddling. We the economy generally take care of ourselves.

Maybe then they should bring home their cash pile, pay some of it in tax and use some of the rest of it to build US-based manufacturing.

Oh, but everything that comes out of Timmy is lies.
Surely they'd be smarter to wait for big mouth Trump's so-called tax holiday before doing that... oh yeah, months later, and no sign of it anymore.

A bit like that wall thingy. Great to know the good American people believe a word this guy has to say, still.

As long as he keeps getting the attention on Twitter that then gets some crap headlines in mainstream press, without actually doing anything. At least it keeps the moronic Trump machine going amongst the believers. Like a cringeworthy TV evangelist telling everybody 'believe in my surmon, and everything's gonna be all right'.

Cook is not qualified to be President just as Gore was not. He is qualified to be Apple CEO because as Jobs shows, it is all about logistics in a tiny product selling hundreds of millions of units. Apple watch will soon be freed from the wrist. Unlike many others I like Cook.

I don't care he and a couple Fox guys are gay because I care what they say and do at work.

Prisma, iPhone App of the Year for 2016, recently announced a "pivot" away from the iOS App Store ... clearly, Cook needs to focus on fixing the iOS App Store first ... it is an absolute disaster from an App Developer perspective !

Cook needs to get his House in order BEFORE looking outwards !

He has been CEO for five years, and the iOS App Store disaster is worse now than it was when he first took over as CEO !

Clearly, Apple is run by an extremely weak Board of Directors, or they would hold his feet to the fire !

Oh, but everything that comes out of Timmy is lies.

Nobody wants to pay more for US made products if the Chinese can produce it for cheaper.

How much more are YOU willing to pay for your iPhone? Because if it were all made in the US, it would double in price to about $1200.

This is the neoliberal world we live in. There's no turning back, and it's fine. This reduces inflation, which benefits the elderly and the poor the most, since they're dependent on commodity foreign products the most.

Americans will just have to find other sources of employment besides competing against the Chinese. If you are competing against a Chinese farmer, you have already lost. Americans have tremendous advantages over the Chinese farmer that they can leverage, including basic english skills. That's a huge advantage in a world where global commerce is done in english.

We all need to be thankful for neoliberal President Obama that the current economy is still growing under Trump. Let's continue to fight Trump's agenda in order to ensure it's continued growth.

The minute Trump finally gets to pass a piece of legislation, the economy will crash. We must ensure the Obama economy remains as-is. Fortunately, President Obama is powerful enough that his agenda continues under the weak Trump administration. President Obama's legacy will be that of America's most powerful president that rescued our economy and gave the people health-care.

This Trump hysteria is nauseating!

People act as though they're disappointed they didn't get Clinton part 2 or Bush part 3. Give it a rest - every damn website is being infected & turned into CNN.

Oh come on. Clinton would have been WAY better. I mean she was such a great candidate. ;)

Such a great candidate that she lost to Trump. Now that's classic. Take that, put it in your pipe and smoke it, Washington cattle.

Thankfully with a patriot like President Trump in office, Tim Cook can have a leader to guide and help grow the economy of this once great and proud land

Looks like Timmy was forced by hand to have a ‘moral responsibility’ under a certain president

:D

I like hearing this, even if I know this took TONS of efforts to get Cook to start talking (and thinking? Hopefully) this way
