Unfortunately is call "running a business for profit". The company I work for use to be an innovator, then GE bought us for profit, ran us dry, and then sold us off to the high bidder. It's standard business practice to run a business either for profit (make investors happy) or for investment (make customers happy). SJ ran it for investment both times he was CEO. The Pepsi CEO in the 90s and now Darth Timmy run it for profit.

Without airing of grievances, how will things get better? If you hide the frustration, the root cause of the frustration won't get fixed.
Yeah true...but we need to something to get our mind off this with happier articles. In all honesty, Tim is actually trolling us with bs comment. Editors posting something positive and avoid posting sad. Avoiding posting sad news might help but that would be pretentious if mr did so. Sigh....

I mean, last time he said that, he delivered the touch bar MBP. I had a chance to play with one today at an Apple store, and my first impression was that the touch bar is very intuitive .
Nothing wrong with being an outlier but the touch bar has been cooly received, even by brand enthusiasts.
Google "gimmick"

They need to fix the following:
  • Don't rip people off with garbage components (AMD mobile GPUs in desktops? LOL)
  • Fix the miserable airflow which causes the iMacs CPU to run extremely hot at the expense of USELESS thinness and then get away with false advertising claiming "4ghz speed!!!!" while having to downthrottle because of said heating issues
  • Not sell a Mac Pro with last years tech and next years prices with ZERO available upgrades for GPUs
You RULE Blade Runner !

I'm totally ready for a new iMac.

Timmy don't disappoint us!
If it is a disappointment I won't be buying it... simple as that.

Tim's comment was intended( but not clear it succeeded ) to allay concerns without revealing anything substantive because saying "desktop" obviously ducks the issue( with the Mac Pro and Mini ). Net result: didn't allay any concerns because most think he is referring to the iMacs and everyone assumes they will be revved early next year( so no big deal ), so his pronouncement is no news at all except that( and this is just a guess, FWIW ) Apple might now recognize their planning impacts Mac sales.

I have a late 2015 imac 5k maxed out and really like it. I do heave photography and final cut editing on it. He is right about the screen. OMG! I hate looking at anything else. My only complaint is that I wished they used more space inside to give it a bigger heatsink. With all that aluminum and surface area this thing should be whisper quiet at load or at least barely audible.

I know that MacOS/macOS/OSX is the best OS around....
What does that mean? It means you have a preference for MacOS. The functionality in windows 10 and macos is so similar at this point, it really comes down to preference. I use both and prefer windows--in daily use it seems far more elegant. But I see macos as essentially equivalant

I'd like to see a new, more powerful Mini with desktop CPU options and replaceable parts. Then a newer and more expandable Mac Pro.

Perhaps even ditch the iMac altogether and make a really nice Cinema Display instead. Make the Mini mountable to the CD.

No reason to have the internals inside the display these days. Causes thermal throttling, causes you to have to replace everything when you might just need a smaller upgrade/fix.

What percentage of users need more performance than is offered by a 2015 iMac? Heck, how many need more than a 2015 rMBP? Is it enough to make actually meeting the needs of that market segment worth the squeeze in terms of ROI for Apple?

It's the fact the price has remained the same for systems that are 1+ years (some 3 years) old. No price adjustments or improvements at all. That is what is absurd. When they do come out with an update, they make it a new line, charge more, and still continue to sell the old model (1+ year) for the same.

What would I like to see? It would be a waste of time to make such a statement, given that Apple doesn't use these forums as feature requests.
Apologies. I re-read my comment and it's intent was unclear. I was simply listing examples of things related to the topic of macs. What you'd like to see was just an example, same as what you think of the state of mac hardware. Things unrelated to complaining about complaining.

I'm pretty sure no one thinks internet forums are a place where companies answer feature requests. They're typically used for the exchange of ideas. Not all of the ideas will be agreeable to all participants.

Please accept my apologies... but some of us are getting tired of the whining. It happens after every release and it's getting old.
Here's the thing though. Whining about whining is just as annoying as the original whine. What's worse than the whining? The pre-whining like: Apple haters in 3, 2,... in before the haters start... this thread is going to be filled with negative... and so on. It seems like some of the fan-complainers think their comments are somehow okay since they're complaining about people complaining about Apple. It doesn't work like that. Both groups are just as annoying and equally drag the level of discourse down to the lowest levels of Dante's Hell. Both groups are an ouroboros of complaint/counter complaint. Forever eating it's own tail in an infinite loop.

Cook has been hanging out with President-Elect Cheeto a bit too much, seriously, his quote sounds exactly like a Trumpism:

"Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we're committed to desktops," Cook wrote. "If there's any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that."

I don't think Tim conveyed just how important Macs are for Apple. Heck, without them, iOS is dead. The Mac is the heart of Apple. Hopefully Apple comes to their senses and renews their focus.

Not entirely unjustified complaints... don't you think people have some legitimate beefs with the iMac team ?

What would those beefs be?

My 5K iMac has the latest i7 4 GHz Skylake CPU, a super fast 1TB SSD, 24 GB of RAM, a gorgeous wide gamut hi-rez display, Bluetooth 4.2, is quiet, cool, not throttled, and is a joy to use. Day in and day out, totally reliable. Being a photographer it's especially great for processing photos.

I have zero complaints.

As suitable Kaby Lake processors are becoming available I imagine the next version of the iMac which will soon be released will have a small bump in speed, with faster TB 3/USB C 3.1 ports, Bluetooth 5.0, and a still faster SSD.

So what exactly is the problem?

Sure Tim. Had to scrap your plans to replace the iMac line with a gigantic neon-emoji with USB-C ports after Microsoft introduced the Surface Studio?

Actions speak louder than words, Tim.

That's an asinine comment considering there are likely lots of actions taking place that the whining MacRumors community isn't privy to.

How often do you people update your desktops? I mean really? I think the mobile age has us all clamoring for crazy updates far more often that necessary. Personally I bought my 27" 5k with the intention of having it at least 8 years. SSD, plenty of RAM, dedicated graphics. What more am I going to get out of a 7th generation processor? Desktops and laptops are mature products. They don't progress anywhere near as rapidly as smartphones and tablets (and even those are plateauing).

These forums have really degraded over the couple of years. I haven't been around here much, but the few times I have its been nothing but whining and complaining often with zero ACTUAL reason.

We sent men to the moon with computers the size of rooms with a fraction of the power you have in that 2 year old iPhone 6. And somehow the current iMacs aren't enough for ya'll to check Facebook on....unreal.

I have bought hundreds of thousands of dollars in the pro market area of Apple for the past 15 years. We are talking about hundred's of MacPro edit suites and a few hundred Macbook Pro editing systems around the world.

Apple has unfortunately it seems, to have become one of the most arrogant companies on the planet.

Our company is about to let go of Apple completely. We are looking at migrating to Adobe and Windows 10. It's such a shame though...

The first inkling I had about the downward spiral was just a couple of years before Apple released FCPX, they dumped their amazing hardware of X-Serves, X-RAID's etc...Most recently they seemed to have dumped the awesome Airport wireless ecosystem, Cinema Displays, Desktops and lets not forget the Mac Mini, expandable Mac Pro tower and the MagSafe!

It's all about Shareholders and Tim Cook making Apple a 'services' company that forces you into there iCloud eco system along with there consumer iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV eco systems. Speaking of services...how about the people on the planet that don't have internet speeds/plans like we have here in the US and South Korea for example. Unlimited? Most other countries have caps on data usage Apple.

Apple...one idea is to split up the Pro and Consumer markets into two separate camps within your new spaceship campus in Curpertino. Maybe, just maybe when you all move in and settle down, that you will come back down to earth and move forward gracefully as the best company on the planet that pro's and consumers will grow to love and trust, just like the old days of Steve Job's.

The point of Apple used to be about a brilliant ecosystem of it 'Just works' Not now - Cook, Ive - please wake up mates!

PS:Have you ever used that Photo's app? Replacement for Aperture? Are you kidding me? Oh, and the new Apple TV 4 remote...

Well said. I use a 2010 Mac Pro for various video, audio and photo projects. I had previously worked on PC's but moved to Macs for the quality build, computing power, and that lovely big case that offers almost endless expandability.

I do believe the professional line is being neglected for the lure of commercial consumer profit. Their one stab at improving the Mac Pro resulted in the trashcan model and what a joke.

I would love to see Apple split their product lines into a consumer line and a TRUE pro line. But I am afraid the pro line will not generate enough revenue to keep the shareholders happy.

Exactly. That type of machine is likely to suit you well for quite some time to come. So why do we need annual updates to products that last 8 years? If you need a computer, buy one. The current iMacs are every bit the powerhouse 99.9% of people need.

For the 0.1% who REALLY need to step it up, continue to complain. But I know the folks doing the griping here don't really fall in that category.

I largely agree with you and I have a similarly spec'ed iMac as you do. But if you need to ask what the problem is, the answer is this:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-studio/overview

Creative professionals (including photographers like ourselves) will start flocking to this once it's globally available in a month or two.

People aren't burning for an upgrade in this segment as they had been burning for a Macbook Pro update, but the competition has dramatically upped its game - and considering that my iMac cost over 3000$, the Surface Studio is about in the same price range. And you really get a crapload of innovation, speed and truly useful features (for a creative pro that is) with it. Anyone I've talked to who has one says it's an absolute eye-opener.

The question is how Apple goes about this at this point: if they raise the prices for the iMac by 500$ as they did with the Macbook Pro, the average consumer won't be able to buy this anymore. The creative pro will likely lean towards Microsoft's offering - so who will buy the iMac?

Well said. Totally agree. Sounds like we have the same 5K iMac - an excellent computer.

tim must be using apple maps, the roadmap path he's taking is long, inefficient and making every one upset about the journey
That is scarily accurate to how I felt when using Apple Maps on a recent trip. It managed to take me the long way around and couldn't estimate the time properly either.
