To be fair, all of the recent news about Apple has been exceedingly negative, especially (and extremely surprisingly) with respect to their recent computer release, the new MacBook Pro, which to my knowledge has been plagued with more hardware-software integration problems than perhaps any device in recent Apple history. As a result, it's easy to become skeptical of any potential new Apple hardware.

All the news has been negative because media like MR have chosen to put a negative spin on absolutely everything.

Seriously. Look at every single thread on this site. Find a happy one. It's nothing but people complaining. It's incredibly negative. There's apparently nothing positive to talk about in the world of Apple or anything Apple related.

Seems they've found that negative reporting generates far more conversation from those that view the site which means more ad dollars for them. Sadly, it means a site of nothing but complaints. It's pretty sad to live in a world where all we do is look at the negative side of things and never the positive.

I'm a little afraid of a Redesign (which I by the way think is absolutely necessary). Those bezels look ancient by now. But Apple might use a Redesign as an excuse to solder everything to the board. And then it is say hello to a fully loaded $6K iMac.

That is scarily accurate to how I felt when using Apple Maps on a recent trip. It managed to take me the long way around and couldn't estimate the time properly either.
apple has determined that time estimates, like battery estimates, are inaccurate and will be removed for user experience. and apple apologists will say, who needs it? it was never accurate anyways

I can easily see that happening. 12% thinner when it's not needed and not upgradable. Plus they'll remove the SD card slot so they can sell you a dongle for that.

You could hope that they've taken notice of the Surface Studio, but if it's anywhere near ready then it's too late and that would need OSX to be made touch friendly. From what Schiller said the chances of that are practically zero. Could imagine a very, very expensive touch bar keyboard though.

I am not so sure of your thesis. If MR had something amazing to show off (see: Surface Studio) the site would explode with - "WOW! Apple managed to pull THAT OFF?". Instead, we have ... less than thrilling touch bars and dongles and the march towards thinness. Basically, Apple has not managed to surprise anyone in the last few years. They take what was in Steve's product line up and basically run their patented formula:

1. Thinner!
2. Lighter!
3. Less Ports!
4. Costs more!

A couple of things were highlights (for me): Apple Pencil, and Taptic Engine. Not sure that much else warrants any kind of excitement frankly.

I begrudgingly bought a Macbook a few weeks ago. I used to love to throw my money at Apple!

We are back to 1990s Apple.

I have to agree with this, i find that just lately it's gotten worse, lots of negative comments about either what Apple are going to do or what they have actually released, yet in real world it's different, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus has been well received, the 2016 MacBook Pro's sold more in 5 days than competitors. But yet Apple is doomed and they need to fire Tim Cook

On a side note, everyone is entitled to their opinion and it doesn't often reflect the overall majority, of course no company is perfect and Apple have made mistakes, but i don't think it is anywhere near the scale of the negative comments on the forum, especially the ones calling for Tim Cook and Johny Ive to be fired/leave the company! i often find those comments so over the top that they are laughable :D

With a potential userbase/market who require top-of-the-line upgradable Mac Pros numbering in the hundreds, it's astonishing to see Apple wait so long to update it.

< /sarcasm >

I don't think so. It's a niche product.

If you're a graphic artist who is constantly drawing it makes a ton of sense - that's their market. If you're not, it makes little sense. For me it would be fun to play with, but would become annoying to use after the coolness wore off.

I played around with one at a Microsoft Store a few days ago. Really loved how effortlessly the swing arm mechanism worked - first class in design execution. You could get the display just a few degrees off the table.

But... the drawing lag was noticeable and the display was nowhere near as nice as my 5K iMac's. And, overall, the choice of materials used felt less than top-shelf.

Still, if you draw for a living as a digital/graphic artist or are a photo retoucher, it looked pretty sweet.

The broader picture with Microsoft's Surface Studio is that, sure as a first generation product it's not perfect, but I love the potential and I completely buy their vision of the future. This right now is a niche product aimed at designers, but one of their demos showed how the device had a 1 to 1 ratio, so for example a piece of paper next to the screen was the same size in real life as in the screen. I can see this being amazingly useful for business and education use.

The usability and potential is very exciting. Imagine dealing with documents, manuals, on that huge screen, all with touch input, being able to make annotations. Imagine this product evolving in future iterations. I agree pen input lag is an issue but that will be improved in future iterations.

To me an iMac is just archaic in comparison, sure the 5k screen looks great, but Apple's vision is that you buy both a tiny iPad and an iMac, and somehow figure out how to work with both? I just don't see a future in 10-20 years where students, business users, find this kind of product differentiation useful.

Apple's desktop Macs haven't seen upgrades in over a year. The iMac's last update was 433 days ago, the Mac Mini's last update was 795 days ago and the Mac Pro's last update was 1,097 days ago.

This is a pasted quote. To me this is pretty damming.

For a company with Apples money and resources why is the mac mini still got such a crappy processor.

Not to mention just over 3 years for the Mac Pro.

Come on Tim. Put your money where your mouth is.

Pipeline, roadmap.. What's next?? I can't wait for a new shinny maxed out Mac Pro to come out with AMD's kiddy crappy GPU and DDR2 Memory rams capped at 12 GB with a CPU released 8 yeas ago....

On the contrary, there are some good stories about how Apple is improving their environmental footprint and a lot of community related products. The issue is that hey make computers not trees, and their users are frustrated with the increased profit over development. It's not because their newest model isn't as fast as the competitor, but rather because there is no new model for most of their products.

The ones that are new added very little at the expense of people's favorite features. No SD slot and no magsafe was not an acceptable trade off for integrating an unremoveable Apple Watch into their "pro" notebooks. Considering Apple touch screens have suffered from touch rot and they refuse to take responsibility why do they think Pro users would be happy about this?

Combine this with the 3+ year delay and a lot of us are in the market again for a new mac. I have a new Mac Pro in my office and my software has exceeded it. I need better tech, but I can't buy a better mac. Meanwhile my iMac is battling a failing gpu that I can't replace. I can't buy a Mac mini, because the "new" one is slower than my 7 year old iMac. I won't buy a new iMac because Apple showed terrible support of my old hardware. At least the gpu is user replaceable on what I have, even if I can't get one. I won't buy a new device that I can't even swap the SSD or double the ram on.

You want to know why MR reports on negative stuff? It's probably because there little positive to talk about. Apple should be thrilled we are complaining because it means we are still willing to listen to what they have to say. Very soon however I am going to have to buy new hardware and I'm going to be far less interested in Mac Rumors if I stop buying Macs.

If Apple "pulled off" the Surface studio, the comments would be flooded with complaints of how it's extremely expensive and only caters to a small # of users, has outdated ports, poor expandability, slow processors- and Apple has really lost its mind this time...

So many times I enter a forum thread on MR these days with positive feelings about the article at hand. Then I see a sea of negativity and whining and decide not to bother. I might as well go and bark at the moon...

Anyway, now I'm here, I'm glad that Tim has made this statement and I look forward to seeing what desktop computers Apple comes up with in the future. I am very happy with my MBP+TB, my iMac 5K and all my other Apple products despite some of their minor flaws. Cue the accusations of being a fanboy etc.

To those who spend all their time complaining unconstructively, you have my sympathies that you are no longer able to enjoy the amazing technology we are lucky enough to have today. Perhaps you are too young to remember how it has evolved from humble beginnings or perhaps you just dislike successful corporations. Whatever the reason, I hope you find happiness somewhere else or perhaps you could start a company and build your own products.

Personally I shall continue to approach the future with optimism and try to embrace the good while forgiving the bad. These products are created by humans and are thus inevitably flawed. That will never change.

They need to fix the following:
  • Don't rip people off with garbage components (AMD mobile GPUs in desktops? LOL)
  • Fix the miserable airflow which causes the iMacs CPU to run extremely hot at the expense of USELESS thinness and then get away with false advertising claiming "4ghz speed!!!!" while having to downthrottle because of said heating issues
  • Not sell a Mac Pro with last years tech and next years prices with ZERO available upgrades for GPUs
Totally spot on. But the Appleverse has forgotten how to listen.

Little chance of that happening.

The proper procedure is to take a complaint to the people who are in a position to do something about the problem, that is the best way to have an issue resolved. And, that is what I did. The people who are in a position to do something about my complaint arent listening. They don't realize that they're showing the exact same behavior (refusal to listen) as that which is the basis of their complaints (Apple's refusal to listen).
Your using generic platitudes as if they apply to internet forums in some appreciable way. I'm sorry but they don't. People aren't trying to solve a problem. They're rendering opinions about posted topics (and a ton of stuff that's off topic). Forums aren't some workplace where some employees are complaining about management. Forums typically don't exist to solve problems.

The folks who are complaining on these forums that "Apple is washed up", "Tim needs to go" or "Apple products suck" should take those complaints to the proper people, in this case Apple. Posting those complaints on these forums will do nothing to solve the problem.
Again, most forums don't exist to solve problems. This one certainly doesn't. No one on this forum is trying to communicate with Apple. They're here to give their opinions. That's it. If someone says "Apple sucks", that's their opinion. If someone says, "All Apple products are great", that's also an opinion. More to the crux of our discussion, if someone says, "There are too many complainers/whiners/haters" or "There are too many apologists/sycophants/fanboys"... yup, just opinions. Not a problem to be solved by Apple or anyone else.
