its not how Confidentiality clauses/NDAs work dude. And unless her husband owns Paypay he is not sighing a NDA with Apple. Not that anything she wrote is confidential anyway, big deal, her husband thinks its Apples fault... what coroprate secrets about Apple/Paypal are disclosed...

Its a computer bug, if he sends out the code where the bug is present you can get him on legal grounds.

He "works" in the "department dealing with this," a lot of companies do not allow employees to acknowledge specific customers or specific issues unless it is through the press office. Most places also have you sign that you will not disclose confidential information about business partners either. I work for a non-profit and we have to post our tax returns, income, and expenditures online, but if you asked me I couldn't tell you how much we brought in last year.

Or Apple could have made less of an arse of his purchase in the first place?

Who says they did. Paypal is not perfect themselves and they could have screwed it up. Unless you can prove 100% that it was Apple. But I find it interesting, assuming it was Apple that we don't have more of these stories regardless of payment form popping up.

Don't want to sound like a fanboy here but paypal has done this to me before not 121 times and not for purchasing from Apple. Actually I purchased a pair of boxing shoes online and paypal charged the same amount 5 times... The store said they only got one payment... After countless emails to paypal back and forth I managed to get a damn refund after 2 months!

If you're a mere $3K away from being broke and not being able to eat, pay your mortgage, etc., then an upgrade to Lion ought to be considered a luxury item, no?

I don't have $4k in my bank account and this would cause a major pain for me too. Notice I said I don't have $4k IN MY BANK ACCOUNT.

I don't keep that much money in my bank account because only idiots keep their money there at 0.25% per year interest. I keep my money in much better places that earn AT LEAST 2-3%(currently). But, the downside is it takes a couple of days to get to the money (fairly liquid). And that's just the money I want easy access to. I have larger sums in other accounts that earn more money, but are more long term investments.

This was completely apple/paypal's fault, so making judgement calls on his purchasing habits with no other information to go on is ridiculous.

Actually - do you have any idea how insane this comment sounds when coming from a citizen of country that is going to be bankrupt NEXT WEEK.

The fact of the matter is, the USA will definitely NOT be defaulting on its existing debts on August 2. This is true regardless of whether or not the politicians manage to come up with a compromise plan to raise the debt ceiling.

On August 2, if no compromise is reached, the regularly scheduled finance payments will be paid on time. And in the background, the federal public service will shut down and all non-essential federal employees will be locked out. THEIR salaries won't be paid, and THAT's where the money will come from to pay the outstanding finance charges. We've already seen this happen very recently, on a somewhat smaller scale, in Michigan.

The people in charge know that the repercussions of shutting down the federal public service would, on balance, be nowhere near as bad as the consequences of failure to meet their regularly scheduled debt financing charges.

Of course, neither side of the debate wants to bear the political responsibility for a federal public service shutdown either -- at least, not so suddenly or on such a large scale. And so, some compromise will be reached which will allow the feds to borrow a little more money for the short term to keep their current debt and labor obligations in order, with the expectation that they'll be able to get their books back in the black more gradually, over the long term.

If he had followed my motto, he would have been fine.

"PayPal. Just say no."

I don't think there is a more ethically challenged company of similar size than PayPal. Just need to Google a little bit to hear all the horror stories.

I have to agree with you completely on this one. I use to use PayPal several years ago but had nothing but problems with them. I will never use their service again and suspect that this gentleman's issue is PayPal and not Apple's.

To this day PayPal owes me money that I will of course never seen luckily for me its not very much only like $100 bucks but still. Reality of it is the service is challenged by the unethical people who run it.

Been using PayPal for a decade and never had a problem.

Having said that, I have my PayPal tied to a secondary bank account that I keep just enough money in to pay for whatever I've used PayPal for. I wouldn't ever tie a service like this to my primary bank account that "pays the mortgage."

A solution until there is a resolution.

For anyone out there wishing to purchase Lion Buy an iTunes gift card then use that to buy the software. This way they can't keep charging your account.

Simples!!!
I definitely deserve a gold star for this idea!!!

I'm sorry but you are way off base here. It sounds like a cash flow issue for this person who had $3k in the bank. From the sound of it, he had enough to cover his mortgage and a $30 dollar charge from Apple. I don't know of many people who can stand to have $3k just taken away and still be good for another $1,000 to $2,500 mortgage payment a few days later. Since we don't know his mortgage payment, what if it was $1k/mo? That means he has 3X his monthly mortgage amount in the bank so a $30 charge would still leave plenty. Removing over $3k however puts him in a world of hurt.

Wow, I guess I should be grateful that I was only billed five times for my purchase of lion. Had I not canceled my billing agreement with Paypal in the App store after two days of multiplying invoices, I might have been in the same boat with this poor guy. Both Apple and Paypal blame each other. While the agent from Apple followed up with me, I can't say either company was helpful. It's takes Paypal five days to credit your account once the charge has been marked 'refunded'.

Apple claims there was only one transaction. When I told PayPal to dispute them, they closed the cases and marked the items as refunded on the 23rd. Bear in mind all this money was taken and never returned yet."

Why in the world would anyone use PayPal? AND give them access to your checking account?! Wow. Anyone so gullible deserves whatever they get. A credit card is the only way to protect yourself.

BTW, this guy may be in for even more surprises if he reads the PayPal Terms of Service....in the event of any legal action he takes against PayPal, they have given themselves the right to deduct their legal expenses DIRECTLY from his checking account too. lol.

I've just been charged twice for lion and server :(
Because my first installation failed, I restored snow leopard from time machine then went to the app store.
Lion was in my purchased tab, so I clicked install
I have just received my second bill!

and this is why they should offer it on some form of physical media.

and let me experience the same! :(

Today received a call from my bank: 'Hi Mr. Gilmore... blah blah blah... did you make 67 Transactions to iTunes of a value of £2.99 each yesterday?'

I bought no applications yesterday, this is all of a result of restoring to latest iOS 5 beta due to OTA not working and reinstalling my purchased apps.

I've sent a nice email to apple and wait their response about this issue. Quite funny as they are now stopping me purchasing the MBA this weekend. :apple:

This week I had problems with paypal buying an automotive part. Was chaged for a part that was out of stock then ended up buying two other parts and only need one. Contacted the supplier to correct the problem. I will know if it was corrected when I get the credit card bill. I don't like paypal.

Finally received a response back today:

Dear Jason,

Thank you for writing back. This is Lavanya again and I apologize for any miscommunication which happened.

Jason, some customers who placed orders recently had their PayPal or ClickandBuy accounts billed multiple times for the same orders.

Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.

Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible.

Sincerely,

Lavanya,
iTunes Store/Mac App Store Customer Support

all of you apple nutswingers blaming Paypal, they had nothing to do with it. It was Apples fault.

He deserves to get charged close to $4K for using paypal? nobody deserves that. I've been using Paypal for many years, and never had an issue till now. And this issue is Apple's fault anyhow.

You deserve to have your checking account wiped out. I hope it happens to you.

you don't know much about how that works do you. If you are under water than the bank can come after you for the balance, there is no such thing as "walking away".

It depends which state you live in and even then most Lenders will not pursue it anyway. Yes there is a such thing as "walking away".

$30 software isn't a luxury no matter how much or little money you have.

So many people live paycheck to paycheck but buying lion wouldn't necessary stand in the way of a mortgage payment.

It can't be said enough. The guy's personal finances isn't the issue nor is it anybody's business to discuss, conjecture, assume, etc. Apple's repeated charges are. End of story.
