I've been charged 5 times.. That extra $120 bucks is rough on this college kid.

I'm disputing it between my bank and Paypal. Got a stop payment from my bank so it won't be charged any more. We'll see though..

All credit cards expire and all credit card companies reserve the right to change your rate or limit based on many factors. Chase will raise my rate to 29% if I am late on a payment with another creditor. So if I am always on time with them, but am late on my mortgage they will rase my rate.

Why would you carry a balance on a credit card? That's just asking for trouble. They can raise my interest rates all they want and I don't care one bit.

sorry to hear of his plight, i am. i've been there-not necessarily with paypal or apple. i think it happens to the best of us no matter how careful we tread online.

i hope all he's looking for is the refund on the 121 copies of lion. maybe it was his intention to score a nice settlement by posting it online. this way, he won't have to worry about his next mortgage. i mean why bring up mortgage in the first place, if not to garner some sympathy votes. that's a problem he created and brought on himself, and a wholly different discussion.

I think you miss the point entirely. Gold and other precious metals have maintained a high value over many thousands of years. Even today gold is worth more than paper money. You obviously slept through world history or you'd know this. Gold prices always change, but the relative values do not. From the times of the Romans, to the heights of European kings, the beginnings of this country, to today precious metals will always be bartered and for very nice things. Whether or not you'll be killed for it or find someone that will engage in a trade for your gold isn't the point, it's that a precious metal will always be in demand and you'll always have it's inherent value to trade things for. Especially so when the paper we call money eventually tanks and goes the way of the Dodo. Have you seen how many Zimbobwe dollars it takes to buy a loaf of bread? I have a 10 billion dollar bill from there. The paper it's printed on is worth 100 times that. Paper money fails because it's based upon debt. Gold is not based upon debt so it's inherent and materialistic value never changes. Is it wise to invest in gold? Maybe. Depends on the style of your foil hat and if you wear one or not. But to say that it's just as worthless in society as paper money or only worth a baguette is foolish. Read world history and you'll see. Entire empires have fallen due to debt throughout history and we are heading that very direction.

Having 4k in the bank in this economy isn't foolish. Nor is this man an idiot for buying a $30 product. He was erroneously charged 122 times. This could happen to anyone and the people calling him out for being irresponsible for his purchasing decisions are either dumb, or try to act superior. He is a victim and we should all stand behind this man for getting screwed once by failures to prevent 122 charges for the same item, and then being screwed again by having the companies point fingers rather than help the dude out. Those chastising should feel ashamed, this man did no wrong and the two companies helping him could make serious brownie points by resolving this quickly and with minimal fuss.

Why are gold and diamonds worth anything? Because someone convinced us that they are. Ask the native americans how those beads worked out. Trust me, if things ever really hit the fan, I would rather not just be holding a pile of gold.

My husband works in the very department of paypal dealing with this. He already knew about it when I asked him. It is Apple's system automatically charging for this. PayPal has tens of thousands of customers other than Apple that are not having this issue. It's between Apple and PayPal, yes, but it's not on PayPal's side.

Also, Apple is refunding any NSF fees that anyone's bank gets, since most people have their PayPal linked to a bank account. (And if you know anything about that, while Apple can refund, there is no way to stop an electronic bank transfer. Not PayPal or Apple's fault.)

Not really a reason to get mad at PayPal, TBH. Apple, definitely. Even our most loved mothership has errors from time to time.

Confidentiality clause? NDA? Your husband ever sign any of those?

Time for me to add my story..

After the iTunes/credit card scam story broke, I decided it would be safer to use itunes gift cards with itunes accounts. To make it even safer, I created 20 different accounts, with different password, and applied the $50 itunes credit to each account.

Within 2 days, all accounts were 'suspended'. Emailed itunes customer support, after a week someone gets back to me saying that one household can only have 5 accounts maximum. Ok, didn't know that, so I ask if they could simply transfer the credit from all the accounts to 5 accounts.

Nope, I had to get a refund (check mailed out to me) Ok, so can I get that then? Nope. I need to scan the copies of the iTunes cards I redeemed. Wow. Luckily, I still had all the itunes cards that I had redeemed. So I scanned all of them and emailed it to customer support.

Good enough? No. Now they ask me to scan the sales receipt. I didn't have that, but had a email confirmation from best buy, so I forwarded that. After a week, they say they'll mail out a check.. and fast forward one more week, I receive a check.

What if I had thrown all those redeemed itunes cards away? Would Apple then keep my money? Hmm..

You bought $1,000 in iTunes gift cards at one time? Or did you try to use the same gift cards on 20 separate accounts? I buy iTunes gift cards at a discount (or use my credit card points when they are "on sale" for better prices then cash back), but I only put $50 on my account at a time. Why did you need $1,000 at one time?

Bought cards at one time, redeemed at the same time. Er.. maybe because I buy more music and movies than the average person (hint: look at my nickname!)

Since it's a significant value I didn't want all the money to be stored in one account. Didn't make a difference eventually, I couldn't use the credit at all.

Wow. Apple apologists out in full force. I can't tell if some are serious or if they're just out trolling. How can people seriously say "if he only had 4k in his bank account he shouldn't have been buying a luxury item like Lion"? Unless you've done some incredibly stupid things that resulted in you spending more than half of your income on housing and a car payment that takes up a good portion of whats left after that, theres really no reason why the vast majority of people couldn't live a very comfortable life on $4,000 per month.

The elitism in this thread is sickening.

While I do *NOT* blame the buyer...I will say this.

Your banking accounts should be kept as simple as possible.

Please....use a credit card to buy stuff! It's so much safer. You don't care if you lose $3000 in your credit line for 48 hours, but to lose $3000 of your hard earned money sucks.

Just pay with credit card and do an electronic payment from your bank to the card, before the bill even comes. This is what I do.

There's a reasonable expectation that a company such as Apple wouldn't **** up and charge 121 copies of Lion to someone's bank account. The nice thing with debit and credit cards are fraudulent protections. Debit cards aren't as safe but they're working on it.

Seriously, this is like the third time in the past week I've seen or read about this happen or something similar. First thing's first, the guy should go to the bank and file a chargeback and cancel his debit/credit card and order a new one. If Apple or Paypal bitch, tell them to ****** off and that he had solid legal ground on the chargeback.

Don't use paypal or a "check card" for purchases like this and make sure that you don't use developer betas to buy stuff.

Even if you have bad credit, you can use prepaid iTunes cards or prepaid Visa/Mastercard credit cards to limit the potential damage and anyone can buy one of those.

I was under the impression that you could only buy Lion through the Mac App Store. How was he using a developer beta of iTunes to purchase Lion?

The victim dragged his mortgage into the story to increase the shock value (e.g. introduce the "human element" of his story which would otherwise simply be a technical discussion. Would it read the same if he said he was going to blow 4K on a rare pair of Air Jordans, but now he can't afford it? He should have just went for the full monty and said that he can't afford a kidney transplant now.

The guy just "lost" $4,000. This is not a trivial amount for a middle-class individual. If he said he can't make his mortgage has it occurred to you that he might be simply telling the truth (human interest or not)?

And what if it is an exaggeration? What if he does want to spend it on silly things (say, like unnecessary Apple stuff)? What if he *is* financially irresponsible (of which you have no proof)? Unlike you, this would not change my opinion on whether the matter should be resolved. It is an error and he is entitled to his money, period.

This isn't a story because he can't afford his mortgage, it's a story because Apple/Paypal goofed majorly.

This is why you NEVER use a debit card for any on-line purchases. If there's a mistake when you use a credit card, it's the banks money that is tied up, not yours. If you use a debit card, your money can get tied up while a dispute is being worked out.

And, no ones being a thief here. It's normal for disputes to take time to chase down who has the money and who owes who. My x-girlfriend works in credit card fraud and she saw this type of thing all the time. They would always recommend never using your debit card for on-line purchases.

I use my debit card because I don't like credit cards at all. I also only have a limited amount of money in that account as most of my savings are in another account (which is why it only went through 4 times otherwise it would have gone through 22 times!!). All the charges were dropped today so now I have my money back but I still have to pay Apple...
Do you think maybe I should ask for it for free? I mean it was annoying having no money in that account for a week.

Mac app store simply sucks

I bought Xcode 4 for 4.99. Now the store doesn't allow me to download XCode 4 unless I run Lion, in which case, the Xcode 4 is free. Totally sucks.

If you were spending the money right away then why did you need it separated like that? If I'm going to spend $1,000 tonight I'm not going to worry about it getting hacked in the twenty minutes it takes me to purchase.

Don't try arguing with people who believe that gold is "real money", and especially don't argue with people who tell you you can get rich investing in silver. These are "feel good" investments, not "money making" investments. If things get so bad that were bartering goods for gold, you'll be more likely negotiating with the barrel of gun than someone offering gold.

What "damage"? I if didn't authorise a transaction my bank removes it immediately and I am not liable for it. End of story. You don't need a prepaid card or anything else. Under the law you're not liable.

That's not true. It might vary from bank to bank but Chase, for example, reverse any transactions you didn't authorise immediately.

Before blame is laid, I will give you a brief run down on what happened to me.

It was either the Lion launch day or the one after. I purchased the Applecare pack. I was on the phone with Apple, during the process I tried to pay with my debit / credit cards. I use the words in terms of many as each was rejected.

This was a real puzzle

After talking to the bank(s) and credit card companies [their fraud departments] it transpired that Apple had tried to take several payments for the same Applecare product. Luckily they were instantly one after the other and so the doors were shut and the cards were bounced.

The cards were eventually sorted and the transactioned carried out later in the day. So something wasn't right, never got a straight answer from Apple but it at least ended pleasantly :)

Luckily I always have my account linked to a gift card. Never my credit card unless I really need to do so. I don't even have a credit card anymore.

At least we only lose gc money if this happens. Not a big deal even they don't refund the money

If you were spending the money right away then why did you need it separated like that? If I'm going to spend $1,000 tonight I'm not going to worry about it getting hacked in the twenty minutes it takes me to purchase.

Because I didn't need to spend it right away. We have to make last minute decisions depending on projects involved. It's not like you have an idea of what music to purchase 30 days earlier.. you get a phone call "We need music that sounds like this album.. now".. and bam.. you buy the album, get an idea of what the whole thing is, and then work with musicians/producers or whatever to create that kind of music.

I like to have accounts ready with credit so I can go ahead and purchase when required. So I would feel a lot safer if I had $1000 spread out in different accounts, with different passwords. I actually found out that my accounts were suspended while trying to buy some music (2 accounts worked, and from then on nothing worked)

I CANNOT FATHOM what people are on about when they say someone who makes $4K a month shouldn't be buying something for $29.

An iPhone costs $650 unlocked. By that estimation, a person should be making over $80,000 a month if they want to buy one of those. Only millionaires should have a Mac by this way of thinking.

What are you people on?

Confidentiality clause? NDA? Your husband ever sign any of those?

its not how Confidentiality clauses/NDAs work dude. And unless her husband owns Paypay he is not sighing a NDA with Apple. Not that anything she wrote is confidential anyway, big deal, her husband thinks its Apples fault... what coroprate secrets about Apple/Paypal are disclosed...

Its a computer bug, if he sends out the code where the bug is present you can get him on legal grounds.

This is really a non-issue. Call Apple and they will refund. You have a 15 day grace period on your mortgage.
