This is at least the fifth reference to "don't use betas to buy stuff." I was waiting for somebody to chime in, but nobody did. So, given it's late in the day, maybe it's me who's missing something. But I'm pretty sure there was no beta software involved.

Lion was a download from the MAS (Macintosh OS X App Store). The safe assumption, true for at least 99% of the million downloads, is that people used Snow Leopard (10.6.6 or better) to grab Lion from the MAS. What beta software could possibly have been used to download it? The "beta" (actually, properly called "Developer Preview") of Lion, itself? If, in fact, you guys are suggesting Lion DP4 shouldn't have been used to download Lion (release), you're wrong.

Apple charged my credit card 9 times for some movie rentals I downloaded from iTunes :mad: paypal is not involved in my issue - it's iTunes
 
I think you missed the point. It may get you stuff now. But if the world economy crashes who is going to give a crap about gold or diamonds or paper money? You take your gold to someone for food and see what they say, they will tell you no, and when you complain they will shoot you with their bullets and take all your gold and use it to hold up their table for a bread stand.

I think you miss the point entirely. Gold and other precious metals have maintained a high value over many thousands of years. Even today gold is worth more than paper money. You obviously slept through world history or you'd know this. Gold prices always change, but the relative values do not. From the times of the Romans, to the heights of European kings, the beginnings of this country, to today precious metals will always be bartered and for very nice things. Whether or not you'll be killed for it or find someone that will engage in a trade for your gold isn't the point, it's that a precious metal will always be in demand and you'll always have it's inherent value to trade things for. Especially so when the paper we call money eventually tanks and goes the way of the Dodo. Have you seen how many Zimbobwe dollars it takes to buy a loaf of bread? I have a 10 billion dollar bill from there. The paper it's printed on is worth 100 times that. Paper money fails because it's based upon debt. Gold is not based upon debt so it's inherent and materialistic value never changes. Is it wise to invest in gold? Maybe. Depends on the style of your foil hat and if you wear one or not. But to say that it's just as worthless in society as paper money or only worth a baguette is foolish. Read world history and you'll see. Entire empires have fallen due to debt throughout history and we are heading that very direction.

Having 4k in the bank in this economy isn't foolish. Nor is this man an idiot for buying a $30 product. He was erroneously charged 122 times. This could happen to anyone and the people calling him out for being irresponsible for his purchasing decisions are either dumb, or try to act superior. He is a victim and we should all stand behind this man for getting screwed once by failures to prevent 122 charges for the same item, and then being screwed again by having the companies point fingers rather than help the dude out. Those chastising should feel ashamed, this man did no wrong and the two companies helping him could make serious brownie points by resolving this quickly and with minimal fuss.

My husband works in the very department of paypal dealing with this. He already knew about it when I asked him. It is Apple's system automatically charging for this. PayPal has tens of thousands of customers other than Apple that are not having this issue. It's between Apple and PayPal, yes, but it's not on PayPal's side.

Also, Apple is refunding any NSF fees that anyone's bank gets, since most people have their PayPal linked to a bank account. (And if you know anything about that, while Apple can refund, there is no way to stop an electronic bank transfer. Not PayPal or Apple's fault.)

Not really a reason to get mad at PayPal, TBH. Apple, definitely. Even our most loved mothership has errors from time to time.

I don't want to come across as being mean, or belittling your husband but PayPal is universally known as an extremely customer hostile company. They're as crooked as they come and this is one of many, many reasons I will never do business with PayPal again. I've had my own extremely difficult dealings with that company or the smallest of problems and I wouldn't trust that company with anything. PayPal sucks. Hard. And they're getting worse every day.
 
Well, Pal Pay has been refunded only 14 of the 15 that I should have been refunded. Now I have to go after apple for the other 29.99. This is a pain. Besides Lion being buggy, I have to put up with this.
 
I was charged for 5 copies. Paypal likes to not know what happened. The iTunes support team has my ticket elevated, haven't heard back in a day.

I guess I learned... don't use paypal ever again.

Why you should NEVER use any kind of card that deducts money directly out of your checking account. Use a freakin credit card and you'll have a month before you'd even have to think about paying it and by then it'll be fixed.

Should this have happened? No, of course not. Should you ever use a debit card? No, of course not... Hopefully this guy learned his lesson and will get a regular credit card that allows him to dispute charges without taking his money while they work on it.
 
im not trying to make apple seem like the almighty can do nothing wrong here but if it was Apple's fault and he needs the money for his mortgage i feel as though they will compensate for him when its sorted out. i know they do give little rewards if they screw up an order like your computer is DOA when you receive it in the mail. i guess we will see what happens.

Crap like this happens randomly to people all the time from their telephone bills to their car payments, to restaurant checks, to you name it. **** happens, period. But because it's Apple we now have a 300+ post thread to discuss the issue and label Apple as an uncaring behemoth out to screw its customers. This is stupid and makes MacRumors users look like idiots.

3k is more than enough to live off for 2-3 months. If he's banking some money every month, I think he's doing just fine. Plus, I'd imagine that's just $3k in his checking account. He very likely could have the rest tied up in CDs, investments, etc, which aren't going to be immediately accessible to pay a mortgage two days later.

Wow. You couldn't have been more correct and your post has a negative? Idiots and fools. They probably think fake visa and MasterCard debit cards are perfectly safe too. If they think so, they can just give me their card for a couple days as I empty their acct and they bounce their mortgage checks and destroy their credit rating, all while some people "sort it out."
 
While amusing, I'm slightly disappointed that this is front-page news.

EDIT: I should clarify my reasoning, since some people seem to misunderstand. This is a freak event (or a few, apparently) related only to PayPal, and it seems more worthy of the former Page 2.

Honestly I don't think its news at all. Its a customer service issue but this guy went to the news about it? Something just doesn't seem right here...

Not to mention he must not be the smartest of people since bank refunds on a card take at bare minimum 3 days but usually more. Its nothing to do with the stores either its 100% the bank in the delay.
 
HA! Apple did this to me a on smaller scale. Charged me 3 times then my Paypal account FREAKED out and I got all these fraud emails.

Good work, Apple.
 
I seriously don't understand the point of arguing about people's finances on this article.

The fact of the matter is, someone ****ed up and charged the guy 122 times for it. It's unclear whether it's PayPal or Apple's ****up, although most signs point to Paypal, because, well, they're a bunch of *****. But, if it was Apple's fault, it could have happened to him no matter what account he was using. Being charged 122 times is ridiculous.
 
This is why i download music/software/movies via torrents.
Everything is 0$ and 122 x 0$ is still free. ;)

I sorta agree but this really was not the point of the article. His personal finances really don't matter on the sense that "he didn't buy lion 122 times. If You purchase something once then you only should be charged once. NOT HIS FAULT amd you seem a little dick-ish. Get off the high hours you came in on!!!! ;)

I too was charged multiple times. In my eyes it is theft from Apple, and wire fraud. I see no difference that Steve Jobs taking money right out of my wallet.

I have spent multiple hours on the phone with Paypal and Apple who both point the finger at each other. I believe it is Apples fault as my boss used his Amex to pay and was charged over 10 times. Is it the fault of AMEX? absolutely not. Is it it Paypal's fault? I don't believe so. They process whatever requests are sent.

Apple flat out refused to believe I was charged more than once, I then had to do a conference call with Paypal and Apple. Paypal verified it, and Apple was dumbfounded. Apple flat out refused to bring any resolution to the issue. I was then told I needed to email the iTunes department as they do not take phone calls. it took 4 days for me to get a reply for someone to tell me that it was only billed once. I will probably have to wait another 4 days to get another reply. I have provided proof to Apple with screenshots of my paypal, as well as a copy of my bank statement.

I will not buy another product from Apple again unless it comes with a bottle of lube. Where is Apple's customer service? I am not sure if I will ever buy another Apple product again after this whole mess.

Time for me to add my story..

After the iTunes/credit card scam story broke, I decided it would be safer to use itunes gift cards with itunes accounts. To make it even safer, I created 20 different accounts, with different password, and applied the $50 itunes credit to each account.

Within 2 days, all accounts were 'suspended'. Emailed itunes customer support, after a week someone gets back to me saying that one household can only have 5 accounts maximum. Ok, didn't know that, so I ask if they could simply transfer the credit from all the accounts to 5 accounts.

Nope, I had to get a refund (check mailed out to me) Ok, so can I get that then? Nope. I need to scan the copies of the iTunes cards I redeemed. Wow. Luckily, I still had all the itunes cards that I had redeemed. So I scanned all of them and emailed it to customer support.

Good enough? No. Now they ask me to scan the sales receipt. I didn't have that, but had a email confirmation from best buy, so I forwarded that. After a week, they say they'll mail out a check.. and fast forward one more week, I receive a check.

What if I had thrown all those redeemed itunes cards away? Would Apple then keep my money? Hmm..
