is the US suffering utility price increases like Europe is? because it might explain the price increase.

US inflation is running at about 8.5%. That's not as bad as in some parts of Europe, but still the worst it's been for several decades.

I'm on an iPhone 12pro and I've decided to be a bit more frugal and just keep it as I dont really need any of the hardware improvements that have been added (not saying they are bad just not compelling for me).

So two questions for the kind folks out there:
1 - Do Apple still do a Battery replacement service for older models (I dont want to risk taking it to a non-authorised place)
2 - Do I have to prep the phone in any way when I take it in (may be being paranoid but do I have to worry about some dude in the back room stealing the data off it for example :))

I predict that someday in the near future, Apple's constant testing of their hosta... customer's resilience to price gouging will result in a quick and brutal collapse. Hopefully, this will usher a post-Cook era where Apple will be less risk averse and operations focused, and more forward-looking and product focused like in the Jobs era.

1: no that ended a few years ago
2: they tell you to do a backup but they didnt really touch my phone besides removing the battery. Even my screen protector was still intact afterwards

Has anyone else noticed that the battery health, as reported by the Settings app, degrades steadily for a couple of years but then slows/stops at around 81 or 82%? Seems to have happened for both the iPhones I've used in recent years.
This is normal for all lithium batteries. There’s a lot of degrade within the first year then slows.

Reasonable price considering its fairly complicated (say it takes 20 minutes for someone who knows it) + battery.
Sure, we could prob outsource it all to some slave labour in china and get it done for half the price, but that's not something I would prefer.

On one hand; what is the justification for this? Are the phones more labor intensive to disassemble and reassemble? Is there some kind of component or special circuitry on the battery that raises the price? Or is this purely to milk the consumer?

On the other hand; what the **** are you people doing to your phones that you need to get the battery replaced? Ever? This has not been so much as even a consideration for me going back to the original iPhone 15 years ago. Never needed this. Not even once. And I drive these phones harder than anybody I know. Way more charge and discharge cycles. Way more time left on chargers just because I can. Etc.

and before you say it’s because I annually upgrade - sure, I did that a lot, but it’s been 3 years since this 11 Pro Max launched, and let’s not forget this was a pandemic phone - for 2 years there wasn’t a whole lot to do in this world besides use your phone. The battery is still so healthy (read: above 80% health) that I couldn’t get a warrantied replacement from apple even if I wanted to, and I’m long out of the applecare coverage period by this point.

You can’t degrade your phone battery that much within a typical 2 year AppleCare coverage period unless you hit it with a blowtorch. There’s just no way.

Hey @contacos - Thanks for the response.
I guess I will just run my current device into the ground and then upgrade to whatever is around at that point.
Thanks again much appreciated.

It's how EVs tend to work as well, there is a "big" drop, then it chills out.

Price increases are not fun, but everyone’s acting like the price of *everything* isn’t increasing.

Apple knows people aren't upgrading as frequently- features aren't compelling any more so people will keep phones longer. Sooo Apple increases the price of the battery replacement since the battery is the only thing people need to upgrade...

Product Strategy in Europe is a massive fail, iPhones prices in Europe are insanely high, they increased average $100,00 to $150,00 Wille in US remains the same price, Apple costumers are furious and boycotting upgrades.
