I think its pretty obvious what happened to the white iPhone.

Before they started mass production, one of their analysts probably said "Uh lookie here, we're going to sell a ton of these on launch day." Obviously they sell more black than white, so they probably shifted to producing all black so that they could handle the demand. They can only make so many of these things at a time.

Judging by the sheer volume they presold they probably made a wise choice.

I don't see why it would be so prohibitive for them (both Apple AND AT&T) to have a massive amount of servers to be able to handle the rush. Sure it'd be a waste for most of the year, but the frustration faced by me and EVERYONE else yesterday was ridiculous for a 4th year in a row now! I haven't heard of one story where the person was able to order smoothly and/or quickly.

Now here's a question, would Verizon be able to handle this amount of load on a single day?

Why would AT&T/Apple bother to do that? Sure, it looked kind of bad for them yesterday. But they still sold 600,000 phones, they're going to sell even more in the next couple of weeks.

I was frustrated as h*ll yesterday too. But why would they waste the money to invest in infrastructure upgrades to cover a once-per-year situation? It doesn't make any sense.

How many people decided, based on yesterday's frustration, to skip the iPhone 4 altogether? Very, very few, I would imagine. If you want it, you want it, and you're still going to order it, even if you have to order today and don't get it on launch day.

Simple capitalism, folks. They're making the sales either way; why lower their profit margin if they don't need to?

I don't know why the 3GS launch would be the standard of comparison. The 3GS was a relatively small incremental upgrade to the 3G (small enough to me that I still have the 3G). The 4 is a much larger incremental upgrade.

I also wonder how much of the fever is really due to anticipated iOS4 improvements (multitasking, especially) that will be available to users before the iPhone 4 is even on the street.

Or maybe everyone is really hot to have a gyro in their pocket. :)

Man

After reading the boards on the new data plans and how they would hinder everyone, the fact it is STILL tied only to ATT, on the new phone specs (EVO did it first!!!), on the things the new iPhone "just can't do", I figured I'd be able to walk into an ATT store on launch day, buy a handful of these turds, and walk out in 10 minutes. There goes that plan :D Once again showing how a vocal minority can skew perception on the web as to a products success.

Because the 3G didn't have a preorder, the 3GS did.

I hope they have plenty on hand for the people who prefer to wait in line on launch day. :(

I wouldn't count on it. I suspect walk-in supplies will be SEVERELY limited. They'll have enough trouble having stock to fulfill all of their pre-orders.

i love ATT's quote - Consumers are clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T's more affordable data plans and our early upgrade pricing.

all in all, it might seem plausible that Apple can sell 1 million iphones on launch day! didnt the original take 64 days?

Hefty increase in demand. The more ppl who use an Apple product, the more will come on board. The joy of use is too tangible for the momentum to stop.

Apple will need more server farms. The new $$$Billions$$$ one won't be enough.

and i am not one of those 600k. Sad day. :( can't even get the july preoder done. this lame. im just gonna wait in line hoping i get one.

Oh my, not even a $1 Billion capacity server farm would have enough power to cope with that.

No wonder AT&T's, and Apple's servers were hammered to the point where they said "Uncle?!"

Don't forget this is world wide. Not 600,000 iPhones on AT&T servers.

I wanna know how many were sold in the US

Speaking only for myself, all the little improvements are nice, but the reason I went through this preorder nightmare instead of waiting a couple months like a normal person is because of the 960x640 screen.

More resolution is ALWAYS better, and the iPhone desperately needed it.

But I can't complain too much... my preorder went through without a hitch.

good new and bad news

this is great news for those of us that want to get a second hand 3GS as a backup as the price will drop big time, but this means more network problems for att as a good portion of the people who bought are probably new customers.

So what's going to happen next Thursday when all of these iPhones are officially activated?

Apple ships them pre-activated now.
so maybe the servers will go down due to ios4 activations not actual new phones from pre-order

I can only hope this is true but why then could they not take pre-orders for the white model with a disclaimer on the ETA so they could get an idea of how much demand there is for it and the consumer can now decide if they are willing to wait for it or not?

Does anyone know how many 3gs's were preordered before launch? Not on the first day but ALL preorders? Just curious as to how this compares.

Exactly and look at it this way, with it shortcomings, as you say (although I'm not sure what you're referring to) you still were buying one, other people may have had the same thoughts as you which is why the servers were bogged down. This forum is the last place to be quoted for truth. ;)

that's how many were processed - how many more were not able to get thru.

i hope att is buying more servers for next thursday because there are a gonna be a whole lotta activations going on at the same time.

So what's going to happen next Thursday when all of these iPhones are officially activated?

Good question, but at least this time they are forewarned. They know with a high degree of confidence how many phones they will have to activate, and they have a week to make sure their systems are ready.

So what's going to happen next Thursday when all of these iPhones are officially activated?

That is an excellent question. Get ready for "Clusterf**k: The Sequel." :D

I'm sort of glad I'll be out of town next Thursday and most of the day Friday. My iPhone will be waiting for me when I return late Friday evening, and maybe by that time the activation chaos will have died down a bit. Maybe.
