What irritates me is that apparently server issues made them sell me a few *extra* iphones.

Finding $900 missing from my bank did *not* make me a happy camper. :(

Fortunately the order status page let me cancel the extras.

So there should be an extra three iphones available to deliver on the 24th.

7 iPhones per second (assuming a 24-hour period). That's crazy!

Actually, it started at 1am pacific and I'm sure Apple ended their day at midnight pacific. So, 23 hours, not 24.

That's 7.25 iPhone per second! :D

More than a half-million in a single day??? Apple should change the product name to iPwn.

Because the 3G didn't have a preorder, the 3GS did.

My point, though, is that the demand for the 3GS was smaller because the differences were smaller. A lot of us with 3G units didn't bother to upgrade. That is less the case, I'm sure, for 3GS owners upgrading to the 4.

7 orders/second is loafing for most servers. A single web front-end and a single database server should have flown with this load. Hell, a single *Rails* server with a MySQL back-end should have been able to handle this! (Rails is notoriously inefficient. And maybe I should have said "Oracle backend", because MySQL generally beats the pants off of Oracle, so, OK, I'll stipulate a single Rails server with an Oracle back-end...)

Of course, it wasn't spread evenly over a 24-hour period.

Even so, ATT should have been able to afford a half-dozen servers.

The real problem lies somewhere else than server load.

Oh my, not even a $1 Billion capacity server farm would have enough power to cope with that.

Yes it would.

Heck, the server farm they had would have been enough were it not for the poor coding on the site forcing people back to the start due to a single timeout failure.

The lack of any statement about the continuing White availability debacle or the complete mess that has been made of the UK pricing annoucements are also extremely unimpressive.

crazy thoughts

It would be tragically classic if pre-orderer's were subsequently made to wait longer while the throngs next week were served instead of turned away. You know, with the $300 I saved yesterday (considering today's stock prices), I should buy just one more share of AAPL. Hey, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em", right?

Not sure if I'm getting an iPhone or an Android-based phone when my contract is up but as an Apple stockholder...woo hoo!

Up six bucks today.

I think they should do away with this whole pre-order nonsense. If you want a phone come launch day then you should show up at the store.
Do you want it so little that actually driving to a store to buy something seems like too much work? And to think that some people on launch day will be turned away because someone wasnt willing to take off work and had ordered online is ludicrous.

The next time...

Perhaps apple should set up a registration link on their site a few months before a product launch. Then they could randomly select the 600,000 users and e-mail them a unique URL to then pre-order when the time comes. It would really eliminate the amount of users crashing the system all at once.

So if 600,000 is way more than Apple anticipated, I hope they can fill the orders! That's a lot of phones to build between now and the 24th!

That is an excellent question. Get ready for "Clusterf**k: The Sequel." :D

I'm sort of glad I'll be out of town next Thursday and most of the day Friday. My iPhone will be waiting for me when I return late Friday evening, and maybe by that time the activation chaos will have died down a bit. Maybe.

I agree with "The Sequel" statement as it is going to be crazy!

I should be happy I actually have one on order, but I experienced a definite Darth Vader NOOOOOO!! moment last night. My wifes confirmation came in the email with delivers on June 24th. Mine came in a few hours later with ships on July 2nd. Why why why did I not order mine first!?! I had to talk her into upgrading since WWDC and she finally watched the video and said okay last night.

Trust me, no. The servers would have copped, but the bandwidth would have not been enough, hence you would still get back server not responsing error messages. Even though the servers are up and running and could handle much more load.

I don't see why it would be so prohibitive for them (both Apple AND AT&T) to have a massive amount of servers to be able to handle the rush. Sure it'd be a waste for most of the year, but the frustration faced by me and EVERYONE else yesterday was ridiculous for a 4th year in a row now! I haven't heard of one story where the person was able to order smoothly and/or quickly.

Now here's a question, would Verizon be able to handle this amount of load on a single day?

-Brian

Apple is not at fault for yesterday's complications. If anything, the frustration should be more toward AT&T, because all pre-orders had to be processed on their end; irrespective of whether or not one ordered through Apple's site or AT&T. Still, I ordered my phone through AT&T's site and received a confirmation e-mail at 12:43 PM EST, and had no complications whatsoever.

If anything, the iPhone will be released on Sprint before it's released on Verizon's network. Don't get your hopes up, though. The phone will remain on AT&T for quite some time, contrary to rumors circulating.

You can get off your high horse right now. People have every right to pre-order. I won't go to an AT&T store, they're unhelpful and worthless, and my nearest Apple store is 2.5 hours away. I'm glad you have 5 hours extra time to drive and then 3+ hours to spend in a store on a Thursday, but I don't.

Also, I'm REALLY glad Apple can release a press statement about how many iPhones were sold, but not tell their customers ANYTHING about the white iPhone. I remember Steve Jobs saying something along the lines that he went to work everyday because of the customers..? Yeah, well Stevie, THIS is exactly how you prove that

Well everyone in the US who had trouble verifying all day on ATTs servers plus all the phones sold in store next Thursday will all by trying to activate at the same time on ATTs servers.

Obviously with orders still available from Apple shipping July 2nd, just extend the preorder period a week longer and do a rollout pre-sale based on some factor like length of service, or loyalty or how many iphones you have ordered previously etc..

People may have not been as likely to skip the 3gs if they knew they would be first in line when the next phone became available.

I'm sure they have been building iphones for a few weeks now at lease.
