That sucks you were treated that way... were you able to get it today!?

Yes, I was able to get it today painless and 100% satisfied. Thank you for asking and checking up. :)

The store and specialist you pick up the phone from is for sure the deciding factor on the experience you receive. The first store I checked out was Carlsbad location in San Diego, CA and the person checking me in from the get go asked me if I was doing IUP with my reservation, and I know she probably told the specialist I wasn't planning to do it. The specialist told me I exposed a loophole and that I needed to purchase it thru normal avenues since they "don't have plusses in stock".

The guy today at the Chula Vista store in San Diego was so chill, he asked me if I was doing IUP or if I wanted to buy it outright. He was totally cool with me buying it outright with my 2 year service contract discount, and there were no issues whatsoever.

Thank you all who shared this tip, it was super successful in the end! :)

It's kind of making me worried from the recent posts, people getting turned away from their reservations. I hope everything goes well for me when I pick up my phone..

I already upgraded using IUP last week. Is it possible for me to reserve a black plus if it comes in stock at my local Apple Store, then just go in and exchange the phones?

As an FYI ...although I was told here I can reserve on the upgrade portion of the site and then just pay in full without problem in store..... they wouldn't allow me to take my reserved phone unless I did in fact sign up for the program...

I don't see why not. You have a 14 day exchange return policy and are already part of the program.

Should of asked for a manager or something. It states at the bottom of the reservation email that you can pay in full.

Did you have to log in when reserving it? What did they ask when you picked it up, did you tell them you are just paying full price, did they ask for your cell carrier info?
Yes, logged in using my Apple ID. When I got there they asked for the email and scanned the reservation code. He asked if I wanted to buy the phone outright. Said yes and he said that's so much easier lol went back and got the phone. Paid and left with a wrapped iPhone 7 + 128 black.

As noted already (and through my own self experience) it totally depends on which specialist you get. one may totally shut you down and the other could be totally chill. if you get shut down i believe you can reference the bottom of the email which says you're allowed to buy it outright, and if you don't back down you should be able to get the phone you reserved. let's hope everyone gets chill specialists who will not worry about it being IUP.

I checked the online reviews of three local Apple Stores, and most of the reviews about the staff were pretty positive, feeling confident about not having a specialist shutting me down.

Was at BestBuy today and got my first look on the new phones. Boy, does the Jet Black look disgusting with all those fingerprints.

Can we reserve a phone WITHOUT an upgrade plan. I just want to reserve then pay full price at the store.

Yes you can!

I was able to do that yesterday.
Thanks for your reply, I was looking for a matte black 7+ 128 for verizon at 3AM on launch day and all i could get my hands on was a silver + 128, still looking for the matte black! What do you choose when you find the phone? The iPhone upgrade program again?

I'm in Canada. I saw a jet black plus on Saturday. I got so excited I choked and didn't log into my apple ID fast enough. It was gone in seconds. Today (Monday) was a write-off..there were no plus phones. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Not sure what its like in the U.S but there always seems to be a plus black matte in Canada when I check in the morning. Too bad I'm set on the JB.
