For those who are able to find tracking information on UPS despite the order still shows "preparing for shipment", what is the weight, according to UPS, for the package?
Depends on how they package it. I had 2 phones last year which came packed two separate ways.

One is a separate box that had filler inside to keep the phone stable and
the second in a smaller box but with shirk wrap around the iphone box inside.

Both had different weights on the shipping labels.

Anyone have a clue (maybe those who ordered the iphone 8) if apple ships the box to return your current phone separately - if you’re on the iUP?

I ordered from Verizon at 3:02am via web and received order confirmation at 3:09am, shipping confirmation 3hrs near my house at a FEDEX location in PA before 9am this morning. All in 72hrs.
Got it...just asked since the apple orders are mostly if not all UPS delivered.

Yeah - I recall when ordering that we will receive a kit to return the old iPhone.

Although I managed to sell mine for about $30 more than my contract is worth, so I won't be returning one of them lol

Not sure who your carrier is, but I received an email from Apple with instructions on printing a label to return phone to AT&T (not accessories. Just the phone. Actually mentioned that). They had a form already filled in with my info and the email has a button to print label. Date for return is no later than Nov 10th and they said to use shipping box from new phone to send it to AT&T. Hope this helps.

Where did you sell it?

If you paid more than 12 months of the phone you would have gotten back that money. I’ve paid 13 months as of my last bill. My new bill starts on Nov 3rd so I’ll probably get 1 month back from AT&T (Just the monthly amount for iPhone lease). For me it was $36.21.

Mines still in ZhengZhou. Does anyone remember when they start flying out?

They will probably leave out tonight but tomorrow if not. Next stop should be Anchorage and then on to Louisville or Ontario, California (if states bound). Will route through Cologne if destined for Europe.

Sigh, its not a contract, its a option that anyone who ships in bulk can do.....jeesh, i think most people just guess and types out what sounds good.... like apple has this mysterious shipping hold contract. It is a option.

Apple has agreements with the shipping carriers that go beyond the standard. For example, if I have something shipped to my home via UPS, and it requires a signature, and I know I won't be home, I can go on the UPS website and waive my requirement for a signature. That way the driver can leave it at my door. But with an iPhone on launch day, Apple removes the option for me to do that, and requires a signature for my package regardless of what I want.

You can sigh all you want. Call it a contract, an agreement, an option, whatever you want, but the carriers definitely have something in effect with Apple that goes above and beyond their standard service.

In case anyone is in the same boat, I was on the APP and the desktop site, APP kept erring out when contacting ATT, Finally got through on Apple.com at about 12:10am or so, but couldn't contact carrier so I had a reservation. Got the e-mail to complete at 3:00am, and completed it at about 7am, went through and I am seeing my shipment on UPS.

No, it's a contract provision, with specific financial penalties.

It is due to loss prevention/protection. There is too much risk and exposure leaving a high-dollar electronics item that is also small and easily pilfered from someone's porch (or whatever area your UPS/FedEx driver would 'drop' a package). Better safe than sorry. If you have ever had a product shipped to you and not there when it has been marked delivered you will appreciate this measure of control that Apple has in place.
