And it's already been said these models will be on device and on Apple's own private cloud compute, its not going back to google. So everyone just relax. We are finally getting a functional Siri, isnt that what you want?

So Apple's Gemini models will continue to be trained using Google's data (presumably current data as well as future data, lest it become stale), but Apple won't contribute its own data. And Google are willing to do this for a mere $1B per year? I'm a bit suspicious of that math.
 
Please let Apple at least do it properly and integrate it fully into iOS. I don’t want it to be another Siri, I want it to be useful.
 
Google is the lesser evil compared to OpenAI or grok …
Still waiting for “AI” to give me something meaningful to make my life easier, and no, search isn’t it, but I also know it is useful for some, just not for me, today

The report explicitly mentioned that Google Gemini will power Siri, as was expected. The next-generation version of Siri is expected to be introduced with iOS 26.4, which will likely be released to the general public in March or April.

Apple first announced the personalized Siri features during its WWDC 2024 keynote, but last year it announced that they were delayed. The new capabilities will include better understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

Update: Apple and Google today announced that Gemini will help power not only a more personalized version of Siri, but a range of future Apple Intelligence features.

Apple needs a MAJOR shakeup internally on software design and product development. I couldn't care less if Tim Cook retires tomorrow and gets replaced by someone else. The fact that Apple under his leadership has allowed itself to fall so far behind when it comes to AI/LMs is crazy embarrassing, on the border of negligence. Siri should be at ChatGPT/Grok/Etc. level of understanding and communicating, instead it still glitches on the simplest stuff and can't connect two prompts together. Apple has the ability to throw billions of dollars and the best people at it and they still can't figure it out. Siri today feels dumber than it did 4 years ago. Absolutely embarrassing

What reason do you have to believe otherwise?

There are so many people looking for holes in security all the time, not to mention the fact that Apple has made privacy such a big selling point of their products, that it would be discovered so fast if they were surreptitiously doing anything untoward. Just look at the hoopla over Siri recordings that were being reviewed by humans, or throttling aged batteries.

I will reserve judgment until these things are actually out in the wild, but I think in this case the onus will be on the suspicious to provide evidence that Apple isn't doing what they say they are.

Any 7th Grade hacker can find a way to extract the data from a Google platform....actually, many ways.

No they do not. No Google account and no purchasing anything ever from Google platform. Only people who were ignorant enough to give them access to their data e.g., Gmail users,Gamers, Google Home, etc. have been compromised. Those of us who stayed in the Apple ecosystem, including purchases, mail, messages,Apps, have been protected from our data being monetized and used by Google.
 
The more this plays out the more it reminds me of Apple's response to the browser wars. Key release years:
1995: Netscape Navigator
1996: Internet Explorer for Mac and Apple Cyberdog
1997: Netscape Communicator, IE made default for Mac
2003: Apple Safari
2007: mobile Safari (iPhone)
2008: Google Chrome

Like what's happening with Apple's AI efforts, the browser thing for Apple came in fits and starts. I downloaded the first beta of Cyberdog, it was interesting but not that useful. It took seven years to put out a usable browser, then another four to make the mobile version of Safari, which was adequate as the app economy exploded. No company is going to be immune from making bad bets, back in the late 90's it was OpenDoc. You just have to hope that you get one right and that you have enough cash (and personnel) to ride out the wrong ones.

Privacy also matters. I think a lot of people who use Apple products do so because they tout privacy so much. If it turns out they're handing Siri data to Google on a silver platter, it's going to erode that reputation.

If this turns out to be true, I personally would have less of a problem with it, I think (pending any new information about the privacy of said data).

A necessary move, but it's unacceptable that the company the size of Apple wasn't able to develop its own in-house AI models and had to outsource to Open ai and Google. They had literally hundreds of billions in a cash pile waiting for deployment, they could have bought Open AI or Anthropic at an early stage if Tim Cook had had the vision to see where the industry was headed, rather than just sitting on his laurels and releasing endless iterations of the same iPhone and watch bands

This is what i love about Apple, its just Practical. No need to build your own models when you can rent the best without running the rat race.
