People need to chill out, it was always going to be google because Gemini is an AI built for MOBILE devices and can actually help users unlike chatgpt which is just not for the average Joe.

Gemini on pixels is immense and I hope its just as good on iPhone, it will be a CUSTOM gemini built just for apple so the weird sheep crying about this should chill.

I really hope we get magic cue, smart screenshots, actually working clean up tool, circle to search, and better smart keyboard.

So glad I left Apple after 20 years and got a Flip 7 phone. It has amazing Gemini integration, obviously. Meanwhile, Apple users have basically nothing until they get a gimped down version of what Android/Samsung users have had for years.

In a statement shared with CNBC today, Apple confirmed that Google Gemini will power the next-generation version of Siri that is slated to launch later this year.

"After careful evaluation, we determined that Google's technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we're excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users," the statement said.

The report explicitly mentioned that Google Gemini will power Siri, as was expected. Apple's decision to lean on Google's artificial intelligence technology should result in the revamped Siri being more capable and advanced than it otherwise would have been, as Gemini's large language model is significantly larger than Apple's own model.

The next-generation version of Siri is expected to be introduced with iOS 26.4, which will likely be released to the general public in March or April.

Apple first announced the personalized Siri features during its WWDC 2024 keynote, but last year it announced that they were delayed. The new capabilities will include better understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

But Apple was all about privacy at one point. And Google, famously, isn't. So is Siri gonna be the mole in Apple's camp?

Apple won't even call it gemini or mention it, it'll be all done in the background and advertised as Apple Intelligence built on a custom gemini from google which only techie people will know or care about.

I’m not so sure. Google was the one to make an announcement about this.

I expect it’ll be like the original iPhone announcement - as someone in this thread has already noted - where Apple made a big deal of the iPhone using Google’s best in class services.

As a user: this is great, Gemini 3 is really really good and I’ll be confident using Siri knowing that it will finally work as expected.

As a decades long fan of Apple: this is an embarrassing cop out. Steve Jobs gave Tim Cook a decade long head start acquiring Siri on his deathbed, and Cook never understood what to do with it or how important it would be.

Hopefully Tim Cook’s successor will not only take this seriously but will have the visionary skills to look ahead at the next 10 years, not just react to what others have already figured out.

The AI model that Google is developing for Apple will run on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, so Google will not have access to Apple data.

The important part.

I hope it's actually true, completely, and there isn't some way we aren't thinking of or being told about that Google will benefit from our data.

The amount Google gets paid for this will reveal some of the truth there.

It’s clear Apple is incapable of closing the technological gap it has accumulated over the year. This is a confirmation cook leadership has been extremely poor and he has missed the technological trends and focussed Apple’s efforts on the wrong things (Apple car, Apple Vision Pro… ). He has to go.

ie Intel going from being one of the powerhouses of tech to the state it’s in nowadays.

They started milking x86 - and then doubling down on x86 - when it was clear that the growth had shifted to risc processors enabling thin light smartphones and ultra books with a great processing power to battery power ratio.

And Apple has followed a familiar pattern in the last few years.

At this point, Apple had better hope that they can use their cash pile to somehow buy anthropic or OpenAI within the next few years.

They haven’t given up. The models will be Gemini but the way it’s integrated in the operating system, the UI and its features will be Apple. I’m sure they’ll use this time to continue to work on their own models for a future release.

But yes, deeply embarrassing for a company whose voice assistant was the first out of the gate over a decade before chatGPT and left to fall apart because Tim Cook didn’t understand Steve Jobs’ vision for conversational assistants which now have proven wildly prophetic.

Apple is requiring Google to use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute framework, where any data sent to the server is pre-processed on-device and the server can never see the actual user data.

I’m surprised so many people think this means that Siri is just going to be Gemini Under Another Name and that all the info we give to Siri will now be going to Google.

From everything I've seen, it looks like it's just going to be using Google's LLMs for Siri instead of Apple's own, which would be like using the OED instead of Merriam-Webster. There's no reason to think that Google is going to be doing any of the processing of any of the data; they're just going to be providing the LLM on which the system is built. Why would anyone think that Apple is going to be abandoning Private Cloud Compute and all that and just handing all processing over to Google?

Exactly what I expected. Knowing that iPhone 17 would require iOS 26, I replaced the phones for the entire family with versions of 16, so we could avoid iOS 26 and stick with 18.7.n until the **** storm is over.
