It's not actually damaging the wood. It's just marking the finish, which means it's probably not that hard to remove. I can understand why that would be annoying to discover, but it's not permanent.

Based on Apple's recent track record of releasing mediocre products, it may be warranted. Mark my words, unless there is a major shakeup in management and talent, Apple will begin to decline to Sony levels in 5 to 7 years. Remember how hot and untouchable Sony was back in the day? Then they started releasing crap products with little innovation and poor quality control, just like Apple is starting to do. Just you wait.

Except the phones, Sony products then and now are phenomenal in design, image, sound and quality.
The only thing preventing their success is too little marketing and word of mouth.

Sony audio gear is exceptional accross the line, sometimes even giving an emotional sound. The phones are average in software and just good in design.

Sony leads the way in electronics development. Again, except the phones, and I don't consider tv screens that important.

You are totally missing the point here. Our mum taught us to use things under glasses when used on wooden furniture. That is not the case with other things. If you leave a book on that surface it won't leave a mark. Same for other items. So, Homepod doesn't strike people like that kind of product that needs something underneath it and that is the whole issue here. So your picture is a miss and I'm sure you know that by now.
Apparently Sonos products leave a mark too. Is there outrage over Sonos products?

Y'all ordered the special edition Olympic Ring HomePod. Standard models will ship out after the Winter Olympics closing ceremony.

Not quite. I did a grad paper study in B-School on Sony's peaks and valleys. There's A LOT more to it.

Apple will probably create a new line of $69 iCoaster’s to protect wood surfaces from the HomePod, which sort of follows the same logic as designing an all glass iPhone so you have to purchase a protective case. Meanwhile, Apple’s revenue in the “other” category continues to grow. :)

"try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer's suggested oiling method”

...is the new…

“you’re holding it wrong.”

It seems like Apple is missing a lot of obvious stuff of late. It’s normally in software with obvious bugs and design flaws, but hardware is starting to show the same problems with this and the terrible new keyboards on laptops, the pro laptop/dongle craziness, etc.

I love Apple and its products. I’m worried about its future. If they don’t stay amazing and innovating ahread of everyone else, "good enough and cheaper" will win. It almost drove Apple out of business before.
What did they miss? A disclaimer that if HomePod is sitting on wood tables treated with certain oils to put something underneath it? This is what I hate about the internet. Everything becomes a gage and everyone is in permanent outrage mode.

Customer: "I just bought the new HomePod and it is leaving a white ring on my table!"

Apple: "You bought the wrong table."

Honestly, Apple hasn't innovated in quite a while.

I have a new Macbook Pro and I don't need a single dongle to operate it or connect anything to it, I just invested about $15 in new cables and all works just as it would with any USB port. The only difference is now I can charge my laptop in my car and from USB power bricks. So that is one where I think moving to all USB-C was a good choice.

The keyboard is perfectly usable for me and I am a touch typist.

But they are missing a lot of bugs that should be caught.

My google home left a mark on my night stand. It wasn’t really a ring but more like a rub mark. I guess because of the different base design. Oil based wipe I bought fixed it

I would like to think you're wrong. Sadly, I fear too that Apple is heading this way. :(

Correct.
And do not forget, Sony's mirrorless cameras, and mobile component lenses. Always top of the line.
