HELL of a run. Bittersweet, tho not exactly shocking, news. Likely more a reminder of my time spent on the planet. 🤪Definitely the end of an era. Especially if you include the Power Macintosh line that preceded it, a very long era.
Form the butt of the Silicon Valley jokes, to THE high water mark, it's been a trip watching Apple, and this community, evolve. And as is with every evolution, this one wasnt' without its hiccups. But the entire arch has been something super fun to have lived with.
The first Mac I ever used was circa 1991.
The first tower I ever used was I think an 8100.
The first Mac I bought with my own hard-earned money, is still the best tower I ever used to date: a PowerMac G4 (graphite). Fresh out of art school and working in a boutique ad agency, I went into a small (but at the time, significant) debt financing a G4, scanner (remember those?), printer (ha), Cinema Display, Pro Tools LE, etc. All-in, I think I dropped around $7,500ish on that rig - but I had big dreams of world domination, so it was justified. To this day, that has been the most bulletproof rig I ever owned/operated.
The Mac I've enjoyed using most? They one I'm typing on now: an M2 MacBook Air. This thing is shockingly capable (I can only imagine what an M5 is like) and laughably light/thin. Perfectly portable and powerful. Makes my MacBook Pro feel like a cinder block.
I've worked as a creative pro since ~1998 - every second of it behind some form of Mac. Fun fact: with the exception of maybe the public library computer when I was a kid, I've only ever used Macs. Around 2008, I made my first move away form a tower and landed on a MacBook Pro. And I've not looked back. My current work computer is an M1 MacBook Pro. My current personal computer is an M2 MacBook Air.
Anyway... I owe may livelihood to Apple and, specifically, the Mac. I'll pour a lil' something out for the Mac Pro this eve.
Cheers!
