The 5S was 9 million the first weekend. That is a challenge to try and beat.

I think it's a given that that's beat.

The question is how much of a "beat" it will be. Remember, China was included in launch sales last year, and this year they haven't even announced a launch date because the Chinese regulators have been dragging their feet in what might be a case of economic nationalism (given the bad press the Chinese media have been manufacturing against Apple recently).

Also recall that when Apple announced 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in 2012, there were lots of people predicting a massive increase from the 4 million phones sold during launch week in 2011. Instead, the real number was 5 million, which was seen as a disappointment. Apple's share price peaked shortly afterwards, but then began the decline that continued until this year. Some of the 4 million won't be included in next week's sales because they are 6 Plus phones that won't ship for 3-4 weeks. On the other hand, there will be a lot of phones sold in stores next week, as well, as it seems clear that there are a lot more on hand this year than last. But a lot will depend on the "mix." Apple got it wrong last year when it ordered more 5c than necessary and not enough 5s. This year, there seems to be a shortage of the 6 Plus.

Only 4 million in 24 hours... Hmmmm

You mean to tell me the site was down because Apple couldn't handle 4 million customers in a day? Eeek! That's not good.

Not 4 million in a day. Likely close to that as soon as it went on sale. More likely 4 million at one time.

Probably quite a while since people saying nobody wanted bigger iphones didn't tire of saying it on every thread.

Then why don't people pick out those guys and send them a PM with a "Haha, told you so!" three times a day?

Out of another curiosity: Are people who keep saying "I told you so!" even weeks later very popular and well-liked in your social environment?

I work in software.... again I'm not saying people aren't trying. I'm saying it could've been better. Crashing is not good. You need to have a plan to handle it.

So do I, yes could of been better sure.. areas of improvements.. lessons learned yada yada yada.. but I'm also sure in aggregate they have been more prepared than you or I could of considered and for you to say.. '..could've been better' tells me everything about you. Are you in sales (software)?

Samsung, for all your silly ads, have you even sold 4 million Galaxy and Note phones in a single quarter?

outside us buyers

I live in south america and I order 3 Iphone 6 :) also got many friends that buyed from the US store. i wonder how many people outside US buy from the US store? ;)

I can't wait to see the Samsung ad mocking Apple about this. Should be a hoot. :D

Seriously though, I hope most of those preorders are shipped, not pick-up.

Yeah, but Android ships a billion units a month. :D

And usually 2 out of 5 units get exchanged because they were defective or just simply didn't do what the consumer wanted it to do. Some will exchange for another android based phone or just simply go to iPhone.

So I wouldnt exactly brag about how many they "ship". Then again that is only shipped not sold. You also need to take into consideration that not all of those android based units are phones. Some can be tablets, media players, and other devices.

Well to be fair Samsung does make money for every iPhone sold so they want apple to do well. The better Apple does is only good for Samsungs components divisions. I'm sure they are very happy to see the iPhone do so well.

Yep. I have a friend who works at the local Samsung plant (in Austin) and from what he's told me, Apple is Samsung's best friend and worst enemy. But at least at the fab plant, he's told me that most of the employees have iPhones, and the company doesn't really frown on it or anything. He is certainly an Apple fan himself.

But I thought people didn't want big phones?

I still really, really don't, but I have no choice. I'm on an iPhone 4, and I want to buy another phone that will get 4 years of OS updates. I'm stuck with the iPhone 6 despite the fact that I think 3.5" is a good screen size. I tried a Nexus 4 a few months ago and the size made me want to throw it against the wall.

There's literally no other option for me in the market, Android or iPhone. Android phones smaller than 4.7" are garbage phones, and I'm not going to buy a 5s so I can buy a new phone in 3 years instead.

The point is that if their site worked properly they could've had millions more orders.

Not really because people who bother to get up at 12:01 am PST usually persist until they get their preorders in. The Apple Store app was down until about 12:45 am and the website was up and running around 2:30 am so not a significant difference.

The Amazon Fire Phone is now $0.99....those will be selling like hotcakes....probably to those upgrading from the equally successful Facebook Phone....

Nope programmer... I didn't even mean my post to be overly harsh as people are taking it. I've been there trust me. I'm sure I'll be there again. So I know what it's like to be in a position where you have millions of millions of people on your site at any given time.

It's amusing how many people in the country claim to be so poor- yet they all rush out to buy phones (?) and are able to afford the monthly.

If nothing else- this should alert Wall Street- the economy is just fine.
