Remember, though, that China was part of last year's launch, and as of yet there isn't even an announced launch date. Also, supply will be an issue, particularly for the 6 Plus. I think we may see 10 million total sales next weekend, but 15-20 million seems overdone. Remember back in 2012, people were predicting sales of 8 million because pre-orders doubled. Instead, we saw sales of 5 million compared to 4 million the previous year. Last year there were no pre-orders of the 5s, but they managed to get 9 million out the door the first weekend.

Good point! It will be interest to see what Apple say, and what they choose to include...shouldn't the weekend's preorder numbers be complete now that it is Monday everywhere?

iPhone 5s is blazing fast. Consider the iPhone 6 only improves performance by 25%, that should show already how fast the A7 chip is in the 5s. If you are dead set on a smaller phone, get the 5s since it is already similar in performance.

While this is true, I'm not convinced that Apple will continue to maintain it past the 4 year window. Ultimately, this is a switch I'll have to make unless Apple brings back a smaller phone version in the future. If they do, I'll buy that, but otherwise, 4.7" is the future I have to look forward to no matter what. May as well start it now.

Yep, Androids had big screens first, and yep Apple is copying that now because they believe enough people want a big screen. There is truth to the "one handed" argument, just as there is truth to the "bigger is better" one.

If you enjoy your big screen, you really do have Android to thank for that. If you choose not to remember lambasting Androids for having giant screens fine, but now you are no different than the Android fans who claim their first forays into smartphones weren't a blatant ripoff of the iPhone. Sure, it's worse what they did, but Apple is still doing a 180 on the "perfect size" statement they made even as little as a year ago.

It doesn't change that Androids are still a woeful experience by comparison, and that the user base of iPhones are much more loyal and statistically affluent, but it does prove once and for all that Apple never really thought 4" was the "perfect" size or they'd still be offering it as at least an OPTION for the 6.

By launching this way it's a tacit admission that Android had it right. I may not agree, but it is what it is, and Apple has made it's move.

Android is an operating system. Operating systems don't have screen sizes. And the iPad had a bigger screen before the Galaxy Note. You DID "if you enjoy your BIG SCREEN".

That's not really a fair comparison, even though it's absolutely true. Amazon's infrastructure is built around online sales. Apple maintains servers to do some sales, but it would take a big shift to make the system stable the way Amazon's is, and mildly insane to do it to make sure it handles a single day of increased demand a year.

Still, it's not like they don't have the money.

I can't say I'm terribly surprised, just based on what folks here were posting about pre-ordering.

the sales numbers are nice, but i'd like to see some statistics on the record amount of butthurt caused by this launch.

If I'm Apple's CIO, I will fire the supervisor in charge of this launch. He/she knows the pent up demand is huge, has a couple of data centers at his disposal, bottomless pit of corporate money, and still, a premium company can't premium service for its most important product. First world problem or not, failing the customer's expectation is failing.

if you're the CIO you should be fired as well for not allowing the purchase of new servers and installation of more fiber and buying new storage to hold the databases to be able to process the orders

I can't wait to see the Samsung ad mocking Apple about this. Should be a hoot. :D

Seriously though, I hope most of those preorders are shipped, not pick-up.

Oh man, me too. I was very glad to see the pick-up option available because I don't think I'd make it home in time for signature delivery. So I decided to preorder for pick-up at the flagship San Francisco store because it is closest to work. In hindsight, this might have been a bad idea.

I think you have to understand that Apple has actually not done a 180. They haven't stated to my knowledge that 4.7 and 5.5 are the perfect size. I'm willing to bet they still think what they used to regarding ease of use. But, they also have to listen to the market which has basically said they want larger phones. Apple finally gave in, doesn't mean their original stance has changed. You are mixing two very different elements together.

I'm not saying they don't change their minds. They have and I'm sure they will again for something else, but this is just a very weak argument in my mind, just like the iSheep never wanted larger phones argument. Has anyone ever read these forums at all? People have wanted larger iPhones for a long frickin time!!

In fact I would argue that adding reachability is proof they know it's not the perfect size.

Think the iPhone 5 had 2 million pre-orders. The 5S wasn't available for pre-order but they did state that 9 million iPhone 5C's and 5S's were sold over the launch weekend. So I guess we'll have to wait until next week to hear what the launch weekend figures are for the new iPhones.

Yep.

Pre-orders don't count as sales because they haven't been shipped or delivered yet.

Apple counts a sale when either 1) they have shipped a device to a retailer or carrier, or 2) it has been delivered to an individual customer who bought it from an Apple (brick or online) store.

Pre-order quantity can indicate more user demand, and/or more orders from retailers, and/or more people buying online instead of waiting in line.
