What about black privilege like affirmative action college admissions and access to minority-only scholarships (not racist at all)? Did they make a poster for those as well?

They have those because everything else goes to the white people. Who benefit from better schools, better jobs, and more stable communities. Many smart black people who haven't had the opportunities of dumb white people depend on those just to get into the game.

Wow. You’re awesome! Can’t “like” this post enough.

And you’re not alone. I might be gay, but I’m also white, cis, male, able-bodied, …the list goes on and on. So being in one minority group doesn’t give you a free pass to ignore your remaining life of privilege either, and I empathise a lot with your post.

Great point, thanks.

Screw Tim Cook and his politicization of Apple. Especially considering he doesn't have the moral spine to stand up for actual juggernauts like Muslim countries or China (hey, don't those guys treat gay people horrendously? b-but preaching to these guys might jeopardize the constant flow of money...)

I'm no fan of of affirmative action as I think it encourages a victim mentality. In an ideal world things like this would be colourblind and jobs/college admissions/scholarships would always go to the most qualified and hardest working person. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world and some see this as a way of levelling the playing field.

"When You’re Accustomed to Privilege, Equality Feels Like Oppression"

A watch band that supports gay and lesbian communities?

Yes, an oppressed minority of which there are still places in the world where you can be jailed or even killed simply for who you love.

Where's the watch band that applauds the straight people? It's got to work both ways or else it's sexist. Funny how that works huh?

Straight people aren't oppressed and aren't jailed or murdered for their sexual orientation. Funny how that works huh?

Is that really a problem though?

I’d be more than happy to support even more good causes like this, would love to see Apple do it.

No, it's not really a problem, but I myself would prefer if companies would keep their noses out of social & political activism.

I think Apple forgot to make watchbands for all these other flags... I think they're being pretty discriminatory. ;)

I've never heard Apple doing anything for "straight people". Or any company for that matter. All I'm saying is it's gotta work both ways.
Again, if Bob is the one without potatoes, why is it wrong to give only Bob some potatoes?

And, yes, Apple has done plenty of things that benefit straight people.

GM, Gilbert Baker debuted his original pride flag design in 1978, and by 1979 it was revised to the six color flag commonly used today in the LGBTQ+ community.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_flag_(LGBT_movement)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_Baker_(artist)

I personally am part of the community, and I have worn my pride band every day since it arrived on Thursday the week it was released, including to two local pride events. I am wearing it right now actually. And I will continue to wear it every day at least through the remainder of June and after that it will be special occasions, mid-October for coming out day, and subsequent Junes, as I don't want it to wear out (as I see with my other nylon bands).

As far as the brown and black stripes that were recently added, that was only in Philadelphia so far, and that's causing a ton of controversy, as the original flag is already meant to represent everyone. However, I think many members of the LGBTQ+ community are aware there's pretty bad racism in the community (as there is in the general population) so we need to do something about that. I'm not sure changing the flag is the right way personally though.

Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves, and others of you are awesome human beings and I'm thankful you exist.
Thank you so much! Wow I've missed out on a piece of American history there. I didn't even know what country it originated or that it started with a flag or some other item.

In the mid to late 90's I started noticing bumper stickers using rainbow colors but the designs were many and varied. I hardly ever even see the bumper stickers around anymore.

When I went to college in 1984-89 there was a thriving LGBT student union and openly gay couples walking around campus.

As time moved on I lived for a few years in a town where gay couples possibly equaled or outnumbered hetero couples, so I guess I lived in a bubble of sorts where I wouldn't have taken notice as it was life as usual and therefore there hasn't been much activism that I've noticed
.

I guess that's something for people to keep in mind, when everyone does have their rights the activism won't be needed anymore. So everyone who currently has their knickers in a bunch over the activism, let it carry on or even support it so we can all get down to the business of living.

I don't know what is being sensationalized in the media, but I can say from raising up family up along gay couples raising theirs, we are all shockingly similar and very boring.

If everyone is given potatoes except Bob, is it really a privilege for Bob to finally get some potatoes after going hungry?

Oh, get a life. Since when have straight people been harassed, abused and systematically oppressed for decades? Seriously... What's next? Human rights movement for the oppressed wealthy white men?

Please tell me what us straight people need "done for us".

Well, you know... centuries of privilege and socio-political power is a lot to handle. Apple should recognize this sacrifice. It's not fair!

Seeing how as straight people were never beaten over their sexuality, forced out of their homes by "loving Christians", discriminated against legally (we couldn't even get married until 2015, and we can still be denied housing and fired for being gay in most states!) be glad you don't need a straight pride month.

Oh man. A lot of people getting offended over a LGBT Apple Watch band.

It is not a big deal. You know what is? Apple's Product Red items! Why are they ONLY showing support for those with AIDS? Where's the support for us clean folks???? Equality!!!11!

Wow, this thread got really ugly, really fast.

It is a watch band. I like how it looks, perhaps you don't. I like that part of the proceeds goes toward some good causes trying to help people. Perhaps you want them to go toward other causes you care about more. Awesome.

Start a Kickstarter campaign, post some Photoshop mock-ups of your "free the range chickens" band and see how you do.

That's the American way, after all.

The LGBTQ commmunity feels the same way. However it doesn’t work both ways. How long have you been able to legally marry the person you love? Have you you ever been threatened or beaten for being straight? Have you been denied adopting unwanted children because you are straight? When was the last time you donated blood? Wish I could. Lots of people need it. You’re lucky you don’t need a straight pride month. Most of the year is straight pride for you, you just don’t realize it.
It’s easy to say “equality works both ways” when you’ve always had it your way.

I’m curious though, were you one of the “all lives matter” people?

I applaud Apple for contributing to a cause. It may not be a cause that we all feel is worthy of such glamorous attention (annual parades, a label of "Pride", etc.), but it does make our world a very interesting place to live in.

I could write several paragraphs about this topic, but I shall refrain, because every time, words get misconstrued and the conversation always takes a downturn. That's the saddest part, I think — people attacking one another because they don't agree with what one said, or how something was interpreted.

I do think that the rainbow colours illustrate the topic well. It's not as simple as straight vs gay, but it's a multitude of life experiences and world views coming together. I just wish the LGBTQ community in general wasn't so defensive and closed-minded to possible root causes to how things ended up this way. I'll leave it at that.

It is a great flag, which means (I’ll copy and paste this) “Aside from the obvious symbolism of a mixed LGBT community, the colors were determined to symbolize: life (red), healing (orange), sunlight (yellow), nature (green), harmony/peace (blue), and spirit (purple/violet).”
This also applies to LGBTQ allies! It has wonderful meaning.
I think the defensive and close mindedness comes from the continuing persecution in many countries worldwide for being born gay, and of course all the hate rhetoric they see online and in the current administration. Also doesn’t help that in America people are beating gays just for being who they are , and in some instances killing them. I’d say it’s a very normal reaction to have to all of this.

Wow, what a mess, the posts here just confirm the reason and need for LGBTQ groups.

--------------------

On topic - I wish it were silicon; my watch came with a nylon woven band and I don't really care for it. I wish I had gotten a black silicon band instead. But I have purchased several silicon bands and enjoy swapping them out every week or so, or depending on what I am doing or wearing.

I agree, a silicone one would’ve been amazing as well. Also better for sweat lol (for me anyway )

You do realize there is more to gay causes and gay people than pride parades, right?
