I disagree with you. I have Samsung with the USB-C port and... And that port is already destroyed.
Lightning port has an ideal fit.
Female Lightning ports are simpler and it‘s easier to clean out pocket lint. Female USB-C ports have a “Dolores” which makes the port more susceptible to damage and also harder to safely remove lint.

This is true, but it also seems like the Lightning port accumulate more lint in the first place. Smaller opening in USB-C port so less lint gets in there?

And here, I am like - what port?

Wow, real antique phone there in the background! Do you still use it?

Apple, please make all future USB-C cords braided like the ones that came with the 24" iMac.

I use Apple's braided Lightning cable. It's nice, but does tend to accumulate dirt/grease over time and is more difficult to clean than cables made from other materials.

Do we think that Apple will be allowed to get away with the locking down a fast charging unless a premium is paid to them to licence the special charging cable.
I suspect regulators will be unhappy that Apple are being as difficult as possible and require them to not lock down the leads so they can again get more money from people.

What do you think will happen?

Apple cold make a MiFi USB-C cable with additional features and be fully compliant with teh EU's new directive. All it requires is a USB-C and minimal charging capacity; data is not even addresses and it allows for customization in charging as well.

There’s no way. We’ll be lucky if the USBC port can do more than USB 2.0 speeds from early 2000 like the Lighting did.

I doubt we'll see that until Apple goes to an M series based iPhone chip.

Not sure but it may be easier to break teh male plug in a USB-C port trying to clean it.

Apple may not need to rely on USB-C charging for too long, as the company has been pushing MagSafe wireless charging. iPhones since the iPhone 12 have incorporated MagSafe, and Apple could be planning to add similar technology to future iPad models. There have been rumors that Apple's eventual goal is to have a portless, all-display iPhone, and with MagSafe and the upcoming launch of Qi2, that may be possible at some point. The Qi2 standard will allow for faster MagSafe-like charging speeds and will serve as a more open alternative to MagSafe.

I pray that never happens. Going portless is a horrible idea for multiple reasons.

  1. Wireless charging is not as efficient as wired and results in a lot of wasted energy
  2. No ports means wired headphones are just unusable
  3. People wanted USB-C on the iPhone for more than just charging. They also wanted it for data transfers as wired USB-C is miles faster than lightning. If the iPhone Pro goes portless every professional is gonna laugh them out of the room
The day the iPhone goes portless is the day I switch to Android.

I agree, and it gets the phone hot as well.

I suspect there aren't that many wired headphones used on iPhones.

While I agree with the data transfer concern I doubt "every professional is gonna laugh them out of the room." While it may impact some edge cases where a user transfers a lot of data, most professionals using iPhones will never noticed or care about teh difference. I have used iPhones for years in business, and as long as I can reliable get emails, make calls, and use some key apps data transfer is of no concern. Only impact is pictures, and iCloud handles that in the background. I suspect most professionals using iPhones have similar use cases and data transfer is only an issue if why back up to a computer.

It should be noted that even following EU's rules, Apple wouldn't need to change to move to USB on the iPhonen 15, or even the iPhone 16. The iPhone 17 would have been the first that wouldn't be allowed to be Lightning. Technology newly shipping in 2025 are the ones affected by the law.

Ah, yes. The "how shall we ever weasel ourselves out of this stupid EU requirement so that we can continue milking users for overprices cables and accessory manufacturers for licensing fees" saga, with script writer Tim "passive-aggressive" Cook.

Strong disagree. In my experience, the durability of the USB-C port is inferior. I had an iPad Pro that started having charging issues after a bout 18 months and have friends who work in customer facing roles who see a lot of returns for USB-C port issues. I’ve never had an issue with Lightning
Agree with your disagree. 2015/2017 Macbooks have huge issues with the USB-C port breaking. Check the forum.

Looking forward to USB-C, but it doesn’t seem like I’ll ever be able to have my dream of USB-C everything. Right now, my iPhone, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max are all still lightning. My Apple Watch has its own charger. I still have USB-A to lightning chargers too. Trying to keep organized:

  • USB-C to USB-C
  • USB-C to Lightning
  • USB-C to Apple Watch charger
  • USB-A to Lightning
is a messy, annoying [first world] nightmare.
This is the biggest reason I never bought AirPods. Ready to buy new AirPod Pros and Maxes as soon as they are updated to USB C!

They CAN'T be as durable! Thats why lighting is a MUCH better port for a portable device. A ten buck cable failure or a 500 dollar port replacement. The choice is yours!

Generally, as an IT support guy, I agree with you, though you do see the odd, well designed port.
I have a HP 830 2-in-1 Laptop here which has particularly 'snug' ports for the USB-C - it's very durable feeling compared to other devices.

Also my 4 year old premium Chinese Android phone, usb-C is still going strong.

Lightning is the most robust and easy to use connector I have ever had and used in my life.

And I go way back. My first connectors were 8 pin, to all vacuum tube apparatus. No BS. Then transistors came along and barrel connectors came with them. Barrel connectors: They're OK, second best of all time IMO. SCSI sucked, being massive, and severely distance limited and $$$$$! Headphone jacks were fine, scratchy sometimes but mostly work. RCAs are still around, good and cheap. Screw on connectors like for cable TV and antennas eventually always strip, usually do to slight out of spec thread cutting by the manufacturer. Serial sucked, constant connection issues due to line noise. Early Apple had some other weird ports I don't remember and never used. The IBMPC keyboard and VGA connectors sucked.

miniUSB I thought was Ultimate Hell until microUSB came along and explained to me true torture. Then Lightning, by the grace of God, graced my world. Greatest connector ever designed. The cables die, buthe port never does. It's unbelievable how robust the lightning port is!

USB-C connector is S H I T!!!!! I hate it. It's not as bad as microUSB, but what the hell kind of a low bar is that to beat?!?!? They are a BAD DESIGN. They will INEVITABLY break, and then generally the device is done. Worthless unless you're great and disassembly of glued parts and microsoldering.

Sigh. I give up. Whatever. I suffered with microUSB for years, I guess I'll be used to the pain again.
Stopped reading after the first sentence: lightning connectors are horrible vs usb-c. I used so many lightning cables, they either break too soon, burn pins or make bad contact. Usb-c on the other hand, we use them in industry devices. They never break. Allow higher power, more sturdier design. Never broke one cable in the last three years of using them.

Dude. Have you even tried MagSafe yourself? Its charging speed is slow as hell, generates excessive heat (wired USBC to lightning charging is not fast and hot already). It’s only great use is to attach it onto a car dash mount and that MagSafe wallet. No wireless charging will replace wired charging. And god Apple is far behind the charging game. We have mocked the Chinese super fast charging tech for explosions, fires, paltry battery life cycle. But now those didn’t happen. Apple better bring us something great this year.
