A lot of people already use 4.7-5" screens one-handed, it's not that big a deal...

I have above average sized hands and I can't even reach the top left of the iphone 5 screen. I'm right handed. I need adjust my hold to an unnatural position to reach it, so I'd imagine there's defiantly more people like me.

Keep on predicting it until it comes true, right?

If like me you've been following these rumour sites for years it's pretty evident that supply chain sources tend to be the most reliable indicator of what's coming down the track. Based on the past few years these rumours tend to get more specific and more numerous the closer they get to production so on the whole I'm minded to believe this one. We are not talking analysts waffle here, we are talking component suppliers in the Apple supply chain. Obviously they don't what the final decision from Apple will be but they do know what Apple are testing out. Production ramp rumours also tend to be reasonably accurate in the past few years.

By the way Darryl, Apple creates markets... they don't push product for markets. And, don't say Apple is hurting when they have close to 150bil in the bank(100 offshore like they legally should). You need to look closer as to where they are now from 5(or even 10) years ago, and where they are headed. They create markets through useful products - a big iPhone isn't more useful unless there is production differentiation for it to make it MORE useful. The screen size is nothing more than a personal preference for most without hard pros or cons.

Why do you need a bigger screen? I bet you don't talk much for business... sounds like you need an iPad, maybe a mini.

Don't put a bunch of words in my mouth that I didn't say. I never said Apple is hurting. I said it's MORE opportunity for Apple. How much money a company has in the bank has nothing to do with anything I've said except- perhaps- that they could afford to give more people wanting to buy things from them what those segments of people want.

I need a bigger phone because I'm 6'5" and have hands too big for the iPhone screen size. Yes, I do have an iPad but it is not quite an iPhone. Apple doesn't get my money for any current iPhone because of this. I am not alone in being the only prospective customer desiring a bigger screen iPhone (even in this very thread, one can see a fair amount of "I want" posts). Do they need my money per the "$150 Billion" argument? Absolutely not. Do they want my money whether they have $150 Billion or $500 Billion? Absolutely. If they roll out bigger-screen iPhones, they are doing so because they want that revenue instead of letting it flow to Samsung, HTC, etc. There's no win in ignoring a profitable opportunity well within their grasp if they would like to take it.

And note: such a move doesn't force a bigger screen on someone like you who is apparently so happy with the current size that they can find such fault for someone they don't even know for wanting something else. I have ZERO expectations that a bigger phone screen means there wouldn't continue to be a 4-inch screen. Instead, it would be much more like filling the gap with the iPad Mini launch: millions of customers who didn't want the full iPad or to settle for the iPod Touch could buy something they wanted. Those completely happy with the iPod or the full iPad could be just as happy with their choices too. Nobody loses when there are choices. There are plenty of losers in a mentality of "I'm happy with the one I have so you should be too", including Apple (missing out on additional revenue opportunities that flow to increasingly fierce competitors).

I guess that with the iOS 7 transition, it would be the best time for Apple to release an iPhone with a bigger screen and a resolution that is not an integer multiple of previous iPhones.

Since developers will have to rework their UI code for iOS 7 anyway, it could be a good time for them to use more of the recent auto-layout features Apple implemented starting with iOS 6 while optimizing for iOS 7.

As for backward compatibility with unoptimized apps, it would be done via fractional scaling (1.5x or whatever), which is something Apple avoided because it would make old apps look blurry.

But since iOS 7 will make most iOS 6 apps look "old" and "dated" anyway, I guess that having them look blurry with fractional scaling wouldn't be such a big deal, if anything it would encourage devs to update their apps for iOS 7 ASAP.

Wait Until 2014

Well... I've said it before and I'll say it again. Apple is just giving away market share and dragging their feet by not releasing a larger form factor. Wait until 2014? Puh-lease.

It's not 2007. Has Apple looked out of their ivory tower lately? There are lots of beautiful form factors in the wild. People are buying them. People enjoy them. Why oh why would you just sit on your hands and let market share walk away from your company. WHY?

Granted they make money. A lot. But why would they just concede defeat on a huge market segment and wait years and years to act? Meanwhile, they release one god damn product a year. That's just plain arrogant and stupid.

I'm thinking that the vast majority of peeps that are saying 4.5" - 4.7" phones are too big have never actually used them for any length of time. I mentioned in an earlier post that I ditched my iPhone 5 for an HTC One about a month ago. The first week or so it felt really big. A month later, it feels very natural.

I just got back from Singapore & Hong Kong and everyone had much larger phones there. Very few iPhones, and tons of large Samsungs. There are markets for a larger screen. I would buy a bigger iPhone.

Anyway, my point is that it is nonsense to dismiss a concept as "ridiculous" given there is a proven market.

Is there a proven market? For a bigger iPhone. Sure there is one for bigger Android phones but that doesn't necessarily mean iPhone users would go bigger in droves or that users of these bigger Android phones and phablets would come over to iOS as if size was the reason they stayed away.

Or that the slowing of sales for the iPhone is due to size choices and not simply because folks are waiting for contracts to run out or because they believed the blog rumors that Apple was going to go back to June releases for the iPhone.

Of course they're testing different sizes - that's what Apple does in its r&d.

They tested dozens of sizes for the original iPad, before settling on the final proportions.. we know that from the SJ biography.

It doesn't mean they're ever likely to be released as final products... nor does it rule that out.

Agreed, but I wouldn't be surprised if a new bigger form factor for the iPhone comes out in 2014.

The 4" screen was never enhancing. It was just their way of keeping up with the times technically by saying they have a 4" screen. It is not larger, it's just longer. Please save me the technicalities of what larger truly means to anyone that loves to argue the point.

There's a penis joke in there somewhere.

It baffles why apple fans are so against bigger screened phones. There are so many benefits to it.

Two reasons why fanboys are against bigger screens:

1. Steve Jobs said so

2. Android phones have them

This does seem a good business model that is working for Apple, and I wouldn't expect a new form factor to come with the 5s.
Possibly iPhone 6, since this cheaper iPhone rumor seems to have gained alot of traction.

NFC won't happen. Jobs was opposed to it.

Jobs is dead. So what he was opposed to is moot.

If the current regime sees value in it they will add it.

The hold up at the moment may be that there are still several flavors of NFC out there and Apple would have to decide either to support only a couple or all of them. Both decisions come with their own issues.

I heard similar arguments against the iPad mini, back in the day.

this.. what's wrong with having options? "oh but the developers".. screw them. if they don't know how to make their app compatible with a larger device, then they shouldn't be developing. PERIOD.

how is this even an option? please.. just re-read what you wrote.

- no voice calls
- no texting (iMessage is NOT texting)

people are so "omg if apple has NOT made a 5" screen yet then I DON'T WANT ONE AND IF YOU SUGGEST ONE THEN YOU'RE SO STUPID. I ALSO REFUSE TO BUY ONE AND YOU DON'T NEED ONE BECAUSE YOU USE YOUR PHONE WITH ONE HAND." blah blah blah blah blah.

but when a bigger phone is release. "oh. my. god. i'm lining up 3 months early for it" (just like the iPhone 5 ;) )

people gotta realize, apple isn't always right. they need to make a bigger phone whether some people like it or not. options are good for people. it will give people choice, rather than people leaving for other smartphones (i'm considering it) just to have a bigger device that makes phone calls.

remember one thing people.. apple needs to make WHAT CONSUMERS WANT, not what they THINK IS RIGHT. and consumers want bigger phones.

best post I've read in here

Don't they already have a low cost iphone that is the year old model? Guess making a 'low cost' iphone would be better for the pocket book.

Yep, and the iphone 4 can be had for free with a contract

Bigger Screen
Better Battery Life
Ultra Thin Design

PICK 2

Actually you can get all three.

With a bigger screen you can still have an ultra thin design (look at the gs4 and one) plus with the screen bigger leaves more room for the battery so a bigger battery would come with it.

UI Design

It seems like the UI changes in IOS7 are designed to limit the need to reach the top half of the screen. Swipe left and Right to navigate panes (instead of the arrow buttons at the top), and fast access for basic settings (swipe up from bottom) seem designed to avoid having to reach the top.

I owned an original iPhone. Then I bought a 3GS. Now I have a Galaxy Note II. I would go back *today* given the option of a 5+" screen. Android is missing all the subtle usability hints that make IOS feel so comfortable. But I'll never again be without a larger screen (I might go back for a 4.7" but that's borderline).

Come on iPhone 5S/6...make me a customer again.
