Oh come on. They talked about a specific part of a feature and it turned out to be a bit more complicated, likely because of privacy issues, than they thought. Meanwhile the rest of the tech world makes promises about AI that are usually false and misleading. And never admit it.
Example for that claim please otherwise I'll consider it whataboutism. Google and Samsung, to name a few, are not only delivering on their products but iterating quickly and in public. Gemini seems to get enhancements every couple weeks for instance. Show and tell

Idk. It sounds like false advertising as they touted it as a key selling point for iPhone 16. Their own ads said it’d come in fall 2024. If people bought the phone with intent to gain access to these features only to then be told half way through the product lifecycle, after initial buyers can no longer return the product, that it’s now not coming for another year (after the next gen product), then that sounds like a bait and switch. Get customers to buy a product based on features Apple advertised from day 1, and then add significant delay to features they bought the hardware for….
Yes setbacks and bugs and unforeseen challenges occur, but they advertised it from the beginning so people would buy now instead of waiting for 17 series. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You should always buy a product, especially a tech product, for what it does TODAY, not for promises of future functionality. You've only got yourself to blame. I didn't buy my 16 pro max for what it might, could maybe, some time far off, potentially and possibly do in the future. That's delusional.

It seems everyone does nothing but complain about how bad Siri & Apple Intelligence is, and then when Apple delays the release of something I genuinely think they thought they'd have done by now, in order to get it right, most people here are still just bad mouthing them; claiming they're intentionally scamming us, covering their tracks, and working out ways to sidestep this and hope everyone forgets about it. Apple is doing what so many people on here have been asking Apple to do; wait until it's ready before releasing it. But since this site seems to no longer be a "Mac Rumors" site, but a "lets just complain about everything Apple does" site, I guess I can't say I'm surprised. Delaying the release of things is not uncommon for any company to do. It doesn't mean they were intentionally scamming us, or that they're incompetent. It means it's a complicated piece of software, and apple doesn't want to release it before it's ready. And if it's AI features that a lot of people on this site claim they don't even want/use, I don't see what the big deal is.
Why can't Tim delay the marketing?

As a software engineer, this sounded too ambitious to me from the get go. I haven't had to implement AI features myself, however, I assume for this to work properly, apps need to use Apple's SDKs, then large models must be available that can tell what each element on the screen is (I guess combined by its label/content), which gets the higher prominence, etc. I am not sure to what extent they planned on implementing it, but felt a bit too complex for most apps, especially as the most commercial apps out there are not built strongly adhering to Apple's design guidelines, SwiftUI, etc. Not to mention that Apple is late to the AI game and there's still no good context-aware AI tool out there, so I was a bit skeptical that Apple can delver something like this in such a short timespan.

The biggest issue to me is that developer effort is redirected towards such projects which bring little to no value to the users.

what an embarrassment.
Yeah, for us who read this forum.
Most people won't even notice, even if they bought their new phone because of those promises.
Hope they get sued and lose, at least it'll get to more generic news sites and more people will be aware.

I bought a new iMac, Macbook Pro, iPhone and iPad for this new Siri. All of a sudden they backing out?

This is a new low, breaking devices with updates, leaving out features for 1 year old devices, forced upgrades and now scam advertisement of features not even existing.

Everything to get that revenue going.

If Jobs were around he would have fired multiple departments for careless nonsense likethis.

Modern Apple are in on the joke.
Modern Apple hire people to create these departments. It keeps the revenue going.

Two-three years ago, I saw a nice EV at a mall, it was rather good looking. It was Fisker. I was interested in it but most of the features were "coming in future with new updates". So, it was a no for me. It turned out that I made the right choice.
I like my Airpods because, even a couple of years after it's release, Apple did add new features which weren't mentioned at the time of release. Apple promised a lot during the release of iPhone 16 and almost 6 months have passed and we are still wondering what is happening with Siri.
My phone, tv or other disposable relatively inexpensive items I don’t care if the promised land isn’t delivered. A $60K car, yeah. Wouldn’t do it.

I get what you’re saying, but you’re conflating two different things here. What you’re referencing would be to customers bummed their iPhone 14 Pro/15 didn’t receive Apple Intelligence. 14/15 were never advertised for it, so it shouldn’t be expected. It was a nice perk of iOS 18 for Pro models. HOWEVER, the 16 series advertised these features to entice people to buy them now from day 1.
Could you imagine if the iPhone 4S, whose main selling point was Siri had to wait until after iPhone 5 came out to be able to use it? Or if you bought iPhone 5 because FINALLY 4G, but sorry bugs so you’ll have to wait until after 5S comes out, then Apple will activate the feature…maybe by end of that year? What if the iPhone X was initially letterboxed with boarders because they weren’t sure how make the new screen dimensions behave properly, or FaceID functionality at last minute became “Coming at the end of NEXT year?”
Expecting to receive all the new features of a new OS every year on the same hardware isn’t the same as expecting advertised features to be present and working on a new hardware the way it was in the sales pitch.

We can agree to disagree, though I see your point. I think there were plenty of reviews like MKBHD that said: well, ny review is on what it does right now because advertised features aren't present.
That made his job difficult as a reviewer but I felt it was fair considering the circumstances. I think the issue here is Apple got comfortable not shipping and fudging feature release dates because they mostly managed to do it late but do it well in the past. And the customers gave them the benefits of the doubt. They may have burned all that good will in one swoop.

I absolutely love Apple's approach to run this locally though. God knows how much data ChatGPT, Grok, etc. have on us.
Gemini flash runs on device how do people not know this. I know because I use it that way on my S25 ultra

I wonder if this is going to be another AirPower incident.
same direction but not same manner. Apple was not forced into manufacturing AirPower as it won't be core products. Apple Intelligence/Siri however, the competition forces Apple to stay in the game. Needless to say.... Everyone's going ahead in AI development and so should Apple.

It’s a forum so everyone gets to say how they feel, but I’ve been on this forum for almost 20 years and I’m thinking of signing off and not coming back as it has gotten so toxic here. Apple isn’t free from criticism but it just feels like it’s non stop.
