I don't think this will catch on
I'd be surprised if even a fraction of S8 owners purchase a dock, to be honest. But I was just making the point that a cell phone -- a cell phone -- can be docked and used as a computer with a mouse and keyboard, Microsoft Office and all. Meanwhile the "light" (per the commercial) iPad Pro cannot use a mouse nor on a larger display.

I would totally buy that dock though. That is so cool.

I feel there is a big disconnect from the vision Apple is trying to sell with the iPad as the next big thing for consumers and reality.

I remember these types of ads that Apple made but for the Mac, they were usually spot on, the product matched the marketing.

But for the iPad, when Apple tries to sell it for school for example, I can't help but think how many headaches you get for every 'advantage' an iPad gives you, because certainly there are a lot of caveats and workarounds you have to be aware and find out, and a lot of things where you are still dependent on a Mac/PC.

Curious Apple would release new iPad Pro ads now. I think it's a tell that we shouldn't expect new models until at least WWDC -- again not typically a hardware showcase so I have my doubts there too.

Also caught my attention: one ad touts the "iPad Pro." No size differentiation. But the 12.9 is not light and does not weigh "about a pound." And the last ad takes place on a plane. I have never seen a 12.9 iPad on a plane. Seems like it would be awkward -- so was the model in the ad a 9.7"

If so, is Apple getting read to knife the 12.9"? The 10.5" will take it's place maybe? 9.7" and 10.5" Pros seem too similar.

Just observations.
I think you are onto something correct.
12.9 probably is not a good seller. At least, I never saw anyone using it in public, whereas smaller Pros are quite visible (but nowadays less then during glory days of 2010-2011). Makes sense to create just one Pro model 10.5, one non-pro 9.7 model and (one) mini model.

Which one do you have, if your only using the iPad for basic email and browsing and mainly video watching the iPad Pro certainly isn't for you, the new iPad however for $329 is a worth a look.

Right now we have 2 iPad Air 2's. Not sure there is a reason to buy a new iPad vs what we have. As a side note, we also had purchased a model called just iPad a few years ago. Apple didn't want to call it iPad 3, even though most people and sites did just that. Apple needs to come up with a coherent and logical naming structure with iPads and also needs to get past the number 2 in their iPad nomenclature, or do away with numbers in the name entirely. Maybe letters- iPad A, B, C etc. I'd want an iPad Q just for the name.

Two of the "Don't Buy" products in my screenshot haven't been refreshed once in the last two years, historically the Mac Pro (or its Power Mac predecessors) have NEVER, not once, gone this long without a refresh. This is what I look at when I disagree that Apple is not abandoning the Mac.

I mentioned the ads not because they are most relevant, but because they tend to show what the focus of a company is. In this case, the focus is definitely away from the Macs.

My 2011 iMac is the epitome of what made Mac so strong for me. 6 years later, I put an SSD and I'm still typing this post on this machine. It was expensive, but I've definitely gotten my money's worth. Why Apple has left the Mac line to rot in wake of declining sales of iPad makes no sense to me. In fact, Mac sales were increasing for awhile before there was a long period of no updates. You'd think the continuous decline of iPads despite investing so much energy while the new MacBook Pro had such strong sales would be a wake up call.

I would too but if I'm doing that give me Windows, I hope Microsoft can flesh out a functional dock, honestly my smart phone is for, phone, text, and email. The real work is at home or work on a desk. A seamless dock would be very appealing but it needs to be a full operating system, not a blown up mobile os.

I also have a Air 2 use it heavily for productivity and other work things, email, web, documents. You'd be right in feeling no need to upgrade as it still functions wonderfully although as someone using it about 9 hours a day everyday I'm noticing it's shortcomings in performance and a fresh Pro with a nice 10.5 inch display edge to edge and latest procccesor would be welcome change for me. But let's just say if they didn't announce a new Pro soon I wouldn't be that disappointed.

I've just tried to print a prepaid code onto a DL envelope from my iPad Pro. Totally refused to print to anything except A4 or Letter in any app I opened the file in. I had to email the file to my Windows 10 machine and print from there.

Should I tweet about it?

So true. I tried and failed to use an iPad for school. I was quite frustrated and disillusioned to discover its limitations.

Apple is just NOT listening. The problem's iOS, stupid.

What format did you need to print it in? I don't see why you'd need more than A4 or Letter format, also have you tried Printer Pro by Readdle?

Really I'm in high school and the only thing preventing me from going paperless are the ignorant teachers that refuse to embrace the assignment portal and digital workflow the iPad offers. Stuck in there old ways I guess.

Agreed, I own 2 2011/2012 MBPs and a 2011 27" iMac. No need to "upgrade" yet.

Robust, flexible, bulletproof, reliable, and upgradeable machines.

Unlike their current crippled, glued, sealed, and soldered GARBAGE.

Which makes the iPad bad for the real world.

That is a great example of how Apple is disconnected from reality.

A pro or pro-in-training (i.e. educational) device needs to be flexible. The world doesn't adjust to Apple. Apple needs to provide tools for us to use in the real-world, or "die".

A laptop has NONE of the limitations the iPad does.

I don't see how the new Macs are crippled? I think they offer the best yet and have some of the tightest most reliable hardware construction yet. As far as I recall the latest issues have been software based, the hardware is some of the most solid yet.

people always think Apple makes you adjust is a bad thing, I say it's good, embracing the cloud for storage isn't a bad thing i can't help if old people are paranoid about government spying and other things. The MacBook Pro might have USB C ports but the only port I even use on my Mac is a headphone jack. I'd say Apple's "adjustments" I've been forced to embrace have simplified my workflow and improved my productivity.

Steve Jobs LOVED high powered standalone PCs. He invented the Next, which was mind blowing at the time. Not to mention the Apple I, II, etc. He certainly would not have let the Mac line crumble. They would be 10x more powerful than they are today, no matter what it took to do that.

Two words:
1. Dongle
2. Hell

Two more:
1. Glued
2. Shut

And yet two more:
1. Throw
2. Away

I wouldn't trade my 15, 17, or (upgradeable) iMac for ANY current Mac model. Not ONE.

I can show up, plug in, and I'm off to the races, ANYWHERE (although I confess I do have a VGA dongle, but that's it).

That's after you've wasted time with "workarounds". Meanwhile, I showed up, got the job done, and I'm out. No fuss, no muss.

An iPad cannot integrate into all the environments a laptop can. Period.

But, if you don't need that, then I can see how it fits your workflow.

For school, I recommend laptop. Every time. The iPad is simply not there yet.

I don't see the big issue with it being non user serviceable or upgradable, just buy what you need from the beginning and usually it allows a more well put together machine.

Well to each their own. I'm a "pro" user and I have yet to need a single dongle for my 2016 MacBook Pro.

I own one. A USB-C to USB-A, on the off chance that one day I'll need to plug someone else's flash drive into my machine. Haven't had to use it yet.

If it doesn't work for you, so be it. But clearly it's working fine for others, because they are selling pretty damn well.

iOS 11 may very well fulfill your "iPad is simply not there yet"

This is my take on it as well yet I see many customers (I work at BestBuy) turn down the MacBook Pro 2016 purely because of the USB C ports. Knowing all of its improvements they will settle on the 2015 model simply because the ports.

Oddly enough, it seems like Apple's marketing department has been MIA. I guess Apple will have to put in a little effort now a days to sell their products.
