And they're declaring the iPad stillborn, a turkey from birth.

And stock tanked appropriately after the emperor revealed that he too, had no clothes on.

Maybe now we can put out some killer content producing cutting edge workstations with full Blu-ray implementation. Like Apple would have had out two years ago if they were the Apple of renown.

With fully tested OS releases that wouldn't cripple more early adopters than they helped.

There's an idea... cutting edge and competency.

Nah...too much to ask for. That's so 2003.

The domination of markets such as media players and smartphones, and the inexorable growth of the Mac market beg to differ...besides, WHO THE HELL cares about Blu-Ray and its DRM-ridden technology?

Blu-Ray is stillborn and has only marginal benefit over DVDs...there is simply no comparison with the REAL leap made from VHS to DVD. I don't know a single person buying Blu-Ray just because it's "better" than the unlocked DVD players they have now.

Whatever it is, he needs to be sent packing for retirement. NOW.

Yes, I'm sure that's about to happen after they announce their most profitable quarter ever and has moved to become the 2nd largest technology company in the US. Yes, get rid of the man at the top that has led the company into this success. Sounds like advice you'd get from one of those bankers responsible for the world's current economic woes.

In what way is HTML 5 more standard than Flash? Explain your answer carefully.

Because HTML5 is actually a web standard..not proprietary.

Flash is a waste of resources anyway, Adobe dropped the ball when it came to CPU optimization for flash

Apple didn't say Blu ray itself was bag of hurt, they said the liscencing for it was a bag of hurt. Here is the gull quote, which people tend to cut/mine:

Blu-ray means less movie downloads for AppleTV and iTunes, just like with Flash. Don't you people get it yet?

I buy Blu-Ray as it IS better than DVD and noticeably so. The longer Apple goes without Blu-ray, the closer I get to not considering a mac for my next computer. I am sure I am not alone either......and I am not talking about soley movies here either.

I mean, camcorders these days shoot in 1080p and Blu-ray would be beneficial in that aspect, as would it be with physical backup media.

Sooooo there goes that theory

PS: DRM ridden tech? You mean like Apple's? Funny you didn't mention that.....

Ultimately I think this reflects poorly on the individual websites rather than Apple. Nothing says "Get with the times" like having your page featured in an Apple promo with missing content.

Apple chooses to build devices that can't play the "missing content". Just about every other Internet-connected device can play Flash just fine. Flash has been a multimedia, cross-platform web standard for a very, very long time. Apple should "get with the times" by being sure that such ubiquitous technologies are supported... or at least OPTIONAL for their users.

The internet is (ideally) designed to be viewed equally on all different sorts of devices. Flash gets in the way of this.

Flash works just fine on all sorts of devices. Macromedia- now Adobe- made/makes it very easy to include Flash playback on all kinds of devices. It does not get in the way at all... unless a company chooses to leave it out of their software on devices they make.

I appreciate the Apple fandom and all. If next year, Steve says that color screens are too much of a battery hog that Apple is going to swing to black & white only on all devices, will you be back on here agreeing with that decision too?

I just paid $2300 for Adobe CS4 Master Collection

You know what I've paid Apple in the last TWO years I've been waiting for a Blu-ray equipped workstation?

ZIP. NADA. Bought a matte screen iMac, USED, for a killer price.

I don't have an iPhone and never will. I doubt I'll buy a portable unless I really have to (they destroy hard drives.)

And I damn well know I'm not giving Jobs a penny until he gets with Blu-ray and leaves the kiddie crap to Mattel or a lower division of Mappel.

And yes, I have an external Blu-ray burner and burn 'em every day. But workarounds suck.

Thank GOD the man does not rule the world and only thinks he does.

IPad is going to have to become itab, name already taken

OMFG I would fire some of my staff over this. Between the lack of Flash support, and inability to work with Adobe to get it covered (flash supported by all major Windows machines) we find out the name iPad is already taken by Fujitsu in 2001, "The company sold an iPad handset in 2002"
Can there be any other blunders on this release. Great product, great potential, but horrible release

What precisely is a "web standard"?

For certain implementations. I've old PCs which render Flash way faster than the complex dynamic HTML required to duplicate functionality.

What's your point? Clearly you're in the minority or Apple's and Adobe's earnings statements would be reversed. If apple has to choose between your business and everyone else's, I think I know what they'll pick. Because they apparently have already made that choice.

this seems to suggest, to me, that Apple is trying to pressure developers into moving away from Flash. A gamble, no doubt. If bigger webpages like NYT drop Flash it doesn't mean smaller websites will. But I think the big concern for most users is just that the website loads completely -- not that it loads flash. If pages start shifting to HTML5 etc. then Apple will have "won."

The only thing I'm disappointed by is that Apple tried to "hide" the flash in its promo materials.

Maybe you should buy an HP with Bluray instead of the Macbook you have. Seems like a lot of stress that you don't need, or are you just a negative person to begin with?

I am a big fan of Apple products, but it is a bit of a biff to tout a product as being the best way to experience the web when it's pretty easy to see that that's not the case with the iPad. I understand that flash is a bit of a hog but I mean if the other tablet companies are using it, then why can't apple? FAIL. The iPad is such an amazing device that will perform less than expected in the marketplace do to this MASSIVE oversight. Like someone said before, no flash in the iPhone is understandable, no flash in the iPad goes against everything that Apple says the iPad is.

I think it's very significant that they decided to show the blue brick boxes rather than replace the sites with one that don't use Flash. Now one reason may be that they composited the screens underneath the person using the iPad in the video, and replacing the site would make them have to reshoot the whole thing because they wouldn't be poking their fingers in the right positions.

But I think it's Apple creating a visible, public standoff with Adobe over this. They're gambling that people will come to see sites that use Flash (and hence, won't work on their iPads and iPhones) as broken, instead of blaming Apple for not implementing something in their browser. It's a big gamble but it should be interesting to see it play out. I think Adobe has the most to lose here. If it gets bad, Apple can just allow Flash support, but if these devices get really popular and Flash becomes not ubiquitous, Adobe will lose the almost universal support they've enjoyed. Once that happens, it's all over for Flash eventually.

And yes, the rollover/hover thing really is a problem on a multitouch-only device.

Common sense. If they were trying to trick people into thinking they supported flash they would have faked the demo.

I see. So that ad agency of yours saw that Flash doesn't work on an iPad and without consulting Apple they decided to construct a 'work around'? And that work around was used without prior viewing and approval of Apple? Interesting theory......

I LOL at your comment.

I would love to see you say this in front of Jobs' face. You'd more likely wet your pants... :D

Why because you think Jobs is a god? He's one foot closer to the grave than most of us. You can't take it with you.

What precisely is a "web standard"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_standards

Essentially, standard practices agreed upon by various committees that define what webpages use as their basic components. Wikipedia has a clear list and even mentions the WC3's view on Silverlight, Flash, etc.

I didn't really know what this meant in practice, I just assumed it meant the difference between HTML and everything else. :)

What precisely is a "web standard"?

From Wiki
Web standards is a general term for the formal standards and other technical specifications that define and describe aspects of the World Wide Web. In recent years, the term has been more frequently associated with the trend of endorsing a set of standardized best practices for building web sites, and a philosophy of web design and development that includes those methods.

Steve doesnt like flash, I think he wants to destroy it.

imho flash looks cool but its cpu intensity is a joke and is one of the most common reasons for browser crashing.

Its a disapointment we dont have the ability to enable it on our iphones and the pad. But flash needs to be rewritten, their are fantastic looking 3D games that dont tax your computer like some flash apps do.

Its a Mexican Stand Off Folks who will flinch first

The sooner Flash is DEAD, the better. Congratulations for such a courageous move, Apple...oh, and while you're at it, why not buy Adobe with some spare change and fire all those stupid anti-Mac executives?

Adobe owes its own foundation to Apple and the desktop publishing revolution; if they can't behave well, just terminate them.

FLASH IS DEAD. AND SO IS ADOBE. AND SO IS THE iPAD
Fixed it for you.

his opinion and geek talk mean f@#$-all to the average consumer--the people this is going to be aimed at. They're going to expect Flash no matter how much it sucks.

The thing is the average consumer doesn't know what flash is. Ask some one
off the street and they can't tell you. Im not pretending to know what HTML5 is but when i went to youtube and switched my player to it 3 of my old windows computers were able to play video which is amazing because Flash crashes them instantly.

Could Apple make it so that all embedded Flash plays in HTML5?
