It's time to give Steve-O the old heave-ho

Nutty personal wars with Adobe over flash? Blu-ray?

Good luck. The problem is, not only does the board believe the legend, the legend himself believes the legend.

No, Steve, you will NOT singlehandedly destroy Blu-ray and flash by ignoring them. The world of flash and Blu-ray will go happily on, WITHOUT APPLE.

I don't know if it's megalomania or stubbornness or just plain stupidity.

Whatever it is, he needs to be sent packing for retirement. NOW.

And then the company can get back to doing what it USED to do best; making cutting edge COMPUTERS that people needed TWO YEARS AGO.

Like full Blu-ray implementation.

Getting rid of flash? Good luck. Nuts, just plain nuts.

:apple:

My question is are there methods for displaying video or playing games that offer the same things as flash but more open source? In apple's mind if they were able to convince all developers that flash is a bad idea, what would the alternative be that would accomplish exactly the same end user goals?

Yes. HTML5. Youtube now uses it so you don't have to use flash if you don't want to, for example.

What some people fail to understand is that HTML can only upgrade itself as a standard once every 10 or so years.

There was once a time when the 'net welcomed competing offerings, and "open" meant the protocol was open. It was understood that standardisation was about carefully specifying implemented innovations of various groups, and that such would increase interoperability.

Today, things have been somewhat turned on their head: the innovators are shunned and those who publish standards are thought of as creating the ideas that go into them.

The W3C, or any standards body, exists usefully to take existing ideas and put them under a uniform framework; the symbiotic relationship with competing innovators is necessary. When it tries to innovate, it produces something unnecessarily complex and far too late.

The Internet needs Adobes as much as it needs W3Cs.

Flash 10.1 supports multitouch and is now running on Andriod, Blackberry, Palm Pre and other mobile devices.

You can do Pinch, swipe, double tap, ect with Multitouch Flash... so Apple has no excuse. AND flash 10.1 was optimized for mobile performance.

Do I honestly have to explain that all of this gigantic amount of Flash out there that everyone talks about do NOT use Adobe's multitouch APIs?

I love Apple gadgets but,

No Flash?
Come on, go to hell with your corporation interests!
Free Flash games? Nooo
Free movie play? Nooo
Flash is spread all over the web, and is a "de facto" standard, whatever Apple likes it or not.
Do you want everybody to rewrite their webs for you??? JAJAJAJAJA
Best device to surf the web, jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja

No Camera?
Come on, again I see corporate interests here.
Every sh*ty mobile device has a camera these days.

You almost make it!
Sorry, but without this 2 IMPORTANT things, you have already lost, many similar devices will come out later this year, I will buy one of those.
They will have camera and Flash support for sure.

Sorry Apple, you could spread this very well, but your corporate interests had blind your eyes. What a same.
I wanted to buy your new gadget but, I will NEVER buy a device with these IMPOSED limitations, sorry.

WHY does EVERY thread turn into a Flash/NO Flash discussion ?

Get over it. Don't buy it.Scheesch.

Maybe because this thread is entitled, "Apple Corrects iPad Promo Video to Show No Flash Capability"?

Well, that is that....No Flash....But we already knew this...time to move on to the next subject

The sooner Flash is DEAD, the better. Congratulations for such a courageous move, Apple...oh, and while you're at it, why not buy Adobe with some spare change and fire all those stupid anti-Mac executives?

Adobe owes its own foundation to Apple and the desktop publishing revolution; if they can't behave well, just terminate them.

FLASH IS DEAD. AND SO IS ADOBE.

I LOL at your comment.

I would love to see you say this in front of Jobs' face. You'd more likely wet your pants... :D

Flash causes so many problems. I hope that Apple's stance will continue to discourage companies from using Flash on their sites. I used Flash CS3 just to produce a simple slide show once, it's a really horrible experience just to do some really basic tasks.

LOL at the people who think anyone cares whether it has flash or not.

75,000,000 iphone/ipod touch users don't.
That's right, 75,000,000 people with a microscopic screen that requires constant manipulation of the contents have other things to worry about than Flash. I'm one of them. But the iPad is a large mobile device that displays the contents of an entire web page. Instead of zooming, pinching and scrolling like crazy you will have the whole page clearly visible in front of you, which will suddenly make the absence of Flash support 20 times more glaring.

And in case you haven't noticed, those 75 million users have not deterred sites from continuing to use Flash, and if you think the iPad will outsell the iPhone anytime soon, think again.

Heads up, you aren't very good at ranting...

The GOOD news is, the web has already ruled in

And they're declaring the iPad stillborn, a turkey from birth.

And stock tanked appropriately after the emperor revealed that he too, had no clothes on.

Maybe now we can put out some killer content producing cutting edge workstations with full Blu-ray implementation. Like Apple would have had out two years ago if they were the Apple of renown.

With fully tested OS releases that wouldn't cripple more early adopters than they helped.

There's an idea... cutting edge and competency.

Nah...too much to ask for. That's so 2003.

How to view Flash on an iPad

I view Flash sites on my iPhone, for those site that require it. I just VNC into my Mac or RDP into my office Windows server (thru the VPN), and run Firefox/Safari/Chrome there, then view the results remotely. Somewhat choppy for video, but fine for photos and Flash menus.

And I don't have to listen to any fans spin.

That method will work on an iPad even better.

Still no fan noise.

You also said several times that MS was dead (with capital letters). But they are fine. How do I know that you are telling the truth this time?

I would love to see you say this in front of Jobs' face. You'd more likely wet your pants... :D

Have you seen the Keynote? Jobs is a frail man. A child could tell him worse things.

really? It is not like Jobs is an ex-Seal...hes a computer geek, hardly intimidating
Heh, yeah... if you poked him with a stick, it wouldn't be the stick that broke in half.

Remember Comical Ali? He never told the truth, he merely expressed his wishful thinking in capital letters. Same deal here.

I know how this will be resolved.

The websites and content publishers who currently use Flash for reasons of convenience and compatibility in a FREE CONTENT ecosystem, will simply use some other rendering engine for 5% of their content in a PAID CONTENT ecosystem.

I want to be PAID, and Steve is devoting massive corporate resources and public perception mindshare to helping me monitize my content and KEEP MOST OF THE RETAIL REVENUE.

I usually give away 70% not KEEP 70%.

Flash? Buh, bye! Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Rocketman

Ok, but tell me, how is it supposed to handle mouse over? Mouse down, mouse up... You know, a lot of those video players don't show controls until you mouse over, but how will the iPad know the difference between a mouse over and a click?

Even mouse position? Your fingers and your wife's fingers are not 1px by 1px—they fill a much larger area. Apple uses some fancy algorithms to determine what link you are trying to press—since Flash goes based on a pure pixel-by-pixel evaluation, that won't work.

Flash, even if it was on iPad, would 90% of the time be useless. Especially for any games, which would certainly need dragging, mousing over, etc.

The only Flash things which _don't_ have this problems are ads. Are Flash ads the part of the web that you are missing?

You know, this actually makes a lot of sense. Then again i don't know how Adobe deal with touch screen flash on other devices.
