Don't really give a stuff about the developers, as a consumer. They will adjust.

To be honest, I'm starting to get over the whole iOS design and layout. I want something new. Give me options, give me something different.

Personally, minor things, I'd like a 'Close All' button to shut down all applications; maybe in the pull down notifications menu. Maybe this menu can be utilised more. I don't turn app notifications on and other than emails and messages, it's under used.

Maybe make the screen larger and make the home button software, is a hardware button really 100% necessary, in it's current guise? Can we use the power button to act as a 'home' button when used in applications, without locking the phone? In apps 1 press for exit, two for lock? Two buttons are unnecessary.

I'd like to be able to adjust my 'home' screen. Maybe with shortcut buttons to turn Bluetooth on and off, for example. Wifi and Bluetooth activation and deactivation are my two biggest grips with iOS. it's probably where 'profiles' might come in handy.

Personally, I'd love a big 720p screen, but to me there are software things I'd like adjusted first.

Never understood the "it's hard for the developer" argument. So let's hold back hardware all because the developers will have a difficult time. lol.
Completely ludicrous just like increasing the height of the screen only. Evolve (Hardware and Software) or die. ie. RIM.

Most developers won't have any problem since UIViewController containers should automatically adjust to the screen height and their UIViews will simply be displayed in that. If they're not using UIViewController containers, their code should be dynamic enough that everything stretches to the bottom no matter what the height is.

"Huge headaches" for developers because they have to deal with OH MY GOD TWO RESOLUTIONS?

...
Please.

Actually, three for assets. Make that six for some assets if your app works in landscape mode.

Plus the two for iPad if you're making a Universal app.

To say nothing of making sure things just look right for the two...sorry four...different resolutions and two different aspect ratios. And that things work right for both.

If you're not a developer or a UX person, don't speak about it.

The iPhone is already on the large side.

I really hope any size increase is optional, and not the only choice in a new model. Phones should be portable. If you want screen real-estate, get a tablet.

I do hope not...

After being an Apple boy since the first iPhone and having a Mac for years before that, I'm afraid that after having the Android Nexus, S2 and One X in my hands for tests over the weekend, along with the S3 coming out later in the year, call it fragmented if you want, but apple will have to pull something bigger than a crappy stretched screen out of the bag for me to continue investing even time.

Apple's not going to hurt the app ecosystem just for a little bit more screen real estate. The next step in resolution is 1440x960, and that's not going to cause any problems whatsoever, it'll just require higher resolution images and such.

Very interesting and if true I imagine Apple will make it as easy as possible for developers to transition their apps.

I want to be the first to jump on the SizeGate bandwagon though. If Apple releases it and says 4" when it's 3.99", you just know some stupid news outlet/blog is going to run with it saying that Apple is a monster and deceiving you.

EDIT: Also, it'd be great if that home button with capacitive abilities (meaning physical button press + ability to slide/swipe finger over it) appeared on the iPhone. I think that would open iOS to some very interesting changes for the everyday user.

I find it highly unlikely that they would change the ratio. It would require all new app designs, which would be a complete 180 from their previous strategy and would require app developers to have 2 versions of every iphone app.

I posted the "fact" that Apple was NOT going to release the iPad for the next 18 months about 2 years before they did. At the time, you and everyone else was claiming Apple was going to release a tablet. I turned out to be right. But of course, you didn't' report on this rumor because I was honest and didn't pretend to have inside info.

A: It's a rumor site, get over it
B: You posting is simply one dudes perspective with no credentials. Why would anyone report on that?
C: Get your own blog...you can say whatever YOU want.

PS: everybody gets something right when speculating, every once in a while...doesn't make you a rockstar. ;)

simply awful. what design school dropout came up with this idea? Apple would NEVER put out such a hideous screen aspect ratio.

They could accomplish a retina display with a screen resolution of 1280x720 on a 4.0-4.3 in screen.

The Xperia S has a higher PPI because it has a 720p 4.3in screen.

1280x720 is what most flagship 2012 Android phones use, coupled with screen sizes between 4.3-4.7in.

Omfg

Ok this will never happen, why was this article even writen?

1. Apples #1 fight against android is fragmentation, why the hell would they fragment their own OS and cause all of the apps to not be compatible until they are rewritten.

2. It's an awkward screen size...

3. Apple has already said the current size fits for the average hand... its a mobile device people. its not a tablet. know the difference.

4. every day, weather im buckling up while texting someone im on may way, or simply walking with a coffee and texting. i need to be able to easily send messages with one hand. again this is A PHONE, its ment for on the go communication... this is not a tablet.

its really sad MacRumors even acknowledged this.

Seems like Android is perfect for you

I think the size is perfect as is. Maybe Apple can figure out a way to increase the diagonal size of the screen a bit while keeping similar dimensions to the current phone.

Seems like Android is perfect for you

Maybe so, but I enjoy everything Apple. I love my iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and so on...

But for me, just a few minor things, the big one being all the menus to go through to get to the Bluetooth and Wifi on and off, is the most annoying.

The iPhone does everything, and more, that I want in a phone. Just a few minor tweeks to the iOS would be brilliant.

I'm sure most people would have 1 or 2 little things they would like tweeked with iOS.

... and yes, maybe I do like the software buttons the Nexus and yes I don't think there is a need for 1 button where the home button is.

Either way, I'm still going to get the next iPhone (or 5s if it is a 5s) once my 4s contract is up.

1. So, one of, if not the thinnest smartphone in the world looks like "a thick brick"? Go figure

Nothing like a brick but it is only really averagely thin by todays high end phone standards.

iPhone 9.3mm
HTC One X 8.9mm
HTC One S 7.8mm
SGS2 8.49mm
Galaxy Nexus 9.47mm

Not to say that things could change, but I remember reading in the Steve Jobs book that they chose the size they did because you can reach the entire screen using just one hand.

Just a thought!

Personally, I don't want anything larger. That's what she said.

I agree 100%!!!! It's a phone, I like one handed use. I can also see the screen just fine. The largest screen I could tolerate is 3.7".

My brother has a phone with a 4.3" screen and no bezel. He's constantly dropping it as he can't let his other hand touch the screen die to the multitouch.

I am not sure if you read the article, but it points out that the screen will be increased WITHOUT increasing the physical size of the iPhone. In other words, decrease the gap between speaker and screen as well as screen and home button.

I hope to see a 4" screen on the new phone. I have had ladies at work tell me they liked the bigger screen on the xyz Droid over the iPhone and it was the reason they chose it. If they like the bigger screen then you know there are guys out there eager to buy a larger screened iPhone. It's the next logical significant change to drive iPhone sales. A better camera (front or back) with a new form factor won't cut it.

We may not be far away from seeing two different iPhone offerings as a new device. At least this year the 4S can hold the 3.5" size when the 4" i5 comes but the next....?

They wouldnt never do this. Afterall, there are still so many apps out there that dont even support the current resolution, let alone having to adapt apps for yet another resolution size.

It doesnt need to be bigger. Why do people think that just because every other Android device is going closer to 5", that Apple suddenly needs to up their game? Unless you're old and struggle to see the screen, the current iPhone size is perfect.

I dont want some tablet wannabe bulging in my pocket.
