They will almost certainly include the charger in a separate box, as they're doing for the EarPods in France.

That’s unfortunate because it creates additional waste. They will still include the price of the charger with the phone even though they package it separately. You don’t get something for nothing because it’s just literally impossible. Apple has to charge because they’re in a business to make money. They’re not going to take a profit hit because of some government mandate

Governments dictating what companies should or shouldn’t include in a product is pretty ridiculous. Let the consumer decide. If they don’t like the fact that Apple isn’t including a charger, then they should vote with their dollars and buy an Android.

More regulations require more government agencies which requires more taxes which leads to more government control which leads to less innovation which in the end hurts consumers.

Exactly let the consumer decide what they want to buy. If they feel not having a charger to help the environment is a good thing they will vote with their wallets

sure, but on the flip side, these big companies get massive amount of tax breaks to operate in the locations that they do. Then they turn around and stiff the customer on top of all these tax breaks? Apple is a trillion dollar company, but can't include a $19 charger? If apple really cared about the environment they wouldn't be doing business in China and be contributing to the pollution problem there.

Tax breaks aren’t in exchange for telling companies what to include with their products. Apple can include a charger but chooses not to. As to doing business in China where do you suggest they make their phones? You want to pay $2500 for an iPhone?

Then they shouldn't be getting any breaks at all. You can't come out and say it's about the environment when you are contributing and are a main factor to pollution in china. that's just a bs excuse. If they cared, they would have put usb c in their phones so you can use chargers and cables from ipad and macbooks.

That's a USB PD controller. Just because it's custom for Apple doesn't mean it has to do with authentication.
It looks like you’re a Google expert.

Twenty minutes ago you didn’t even had a clue that there’s an ARM processor inside power adapters.

I have never ever said authentication, if you don’t know what hand shake means just please stop posting. Also, pay attention to these words: SERIAL NUMBER.

So Apple is a main factor for the pollution in China? Can you cite that statement? I don't have any macbooks (personally) nor any usc-c ipads...so for me I don't need the usb-c cord that came with the iphone 12. In fact switching to usb-c in my house would be an environmental nightmare. It's not as black and white as made out.

for them to cite "environmental" concerns regarding a $19 charging block, then i can cite what i just did lol. Then why include a usb c cord at all? i don't get the play there.

I can understand not including the charging brick. I guess it's a baby step toward something bigger. As to the usb-c vs usb-a maybe Apple had to include something...more and more computers support PD, so there is that.

Agreed Apple can take the hit but I don’t agree that they should have offered a free charger. If they’re going to do that they should’ve just included it in the box because no one will turn down free anything. Apple could offer a free charger that’s only works with android phones and no one would turn it down. People will never turn down free stuff regardless if they need it or not
There have been people posting in threads of this nature about how they are happy with this decision and have so many chargers that they really don't want another one, especially if it all helps the environment too. Surely people who would say that wouldn't go for the free charger that would be offered since that would clearly contradict what they said.

I get it to a point, but they give a cord that they want you to use an updated charger block for. yet don't included the updated technology on the phone and expect people to use old charger block. I have a MacBook Air and iPad Pro so everything is now usb c except iPhone. I didn't upgrade phone bc that one issue alone and I know others who didn't upgrade either. Now I would need to unplug my cable each time and plug it in the block each time I wanna charge a different device, when apple could have just put usb c. So when I hear about environmental concerns, that makes no sense to me at all. If that were the case they wouldn't have included an updated cable which is supposed to be used with a different type of charging block.

Okay let me rephrase. Maybe one or two would refuse but most people who don’t need it would still take it. Most people would not buy a charger if they don’t need one because it costs money

Next thing you know cars will be sold without the ability to open the fuel cap unless a separate key is purchased from the manufacturer. Consumer protections exist for a reason. It's not to say that anything that everything falls under one extreme or another, but there are things in place to avoid those sort of extremes.

some people are just complete fanboys that any decision apple makes they are behind lol. and that they just love to argue with people who don't agree with those decisions.

Some might, some might not. But at least consumers who would actually need a power adapter wouldn't need to make yet another purchase and spend more money on something that was always included simply because the company decided it supposedly wanted to help the environment while shifting the burden of that onto the consumers and coming out ahead in the process.

No because Apple would have to include the cost of however many chargers with the phone. So even if I didn’t want one I would have to pay for it.

By that logic it seems like we were all fine paying for it when it has always been included with phones for years and years.

Yes we were. We also got the charger for paying for it. The problem is most people were collecting chargers and wired headphones for no reason. Everyone I know who has an iPhone or even an Android phone has at least three chargers. We don’t need to add more to the landfill. If you need one buy it and if not then don’t. It’s not complicated

While I don't think it's the best overall solution, Apple should have two sku's and included the charger in the second sku and added $19 to the price. Those who wanted the charger, could then still buy it.

Well, then if we were and now it's not included, seems like we shouldn't be paying for it anymore in the price.

As for what some have been collecting or not, certainly even in this thread alone there have been people posting they don't really have some sort of collections and often enough either give or sell their older phones to someone else along with the chargers. So a lot of these type of things are mostly assumptions that might hold for some and not for others, which kind of puts them neither here nor there.

It's great not to add to the landfill, and it's great that Apple decided to improve on that, but there's something to be said about the burden of it all just being shifted onto he consumers while Apple even ends up gaining from it.

what's your take on why apple didn't include usb c on the iPhone?

With an approach of that sort, perhaps rather than asking those who might need what's normally been part of the purchase to pay more for it suddenly, have a version that doesn't include the charger that is slightly less expensive to encourage people who wouldn't really need one to go with that?

now you have an extra cable people aren't gonna use bc they don't have a compatible block to use it with. makes so much sense now!
