The album is so terrible it should be considered malware.

Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems.[1] It can appear in the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software.[2] 'Malware' is a general term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software.[3] The term badware is sometimes used, and applied to both true (malicious) malware and unintentionally harmful software.[4]

Nope, it's just music that you didn't ask for. :)

No. Apple avoid tax because they are a global corporation that generates profits in every corner of the world through subsidiary companies that are domiciled outside of the US, but the US government insists on getting its cut because they have a presence in the US. Apple chooses to keeps these funds offshore and to invest them back into R&D.

U2 move funds away from their place of origin to avoid tax, whereas Apple do not import foreign funds into a US tax system. Not quite the same.

But I am not saying Apple are wonderful and faultless, just that they are not bad enough to enrage me!

Please...Apple is a company based in the USA. All profits are made for the company. Pay your F***king taxes. Like all us poor people have to.

i really can't believe people couldn't just delete it if they don't want it. i bet if it wasn't U2, and if it was some other music act with arguably more [insert your type of credibility here] and a safer option for folks to like, then this move would've been considered genius. But oh hey if iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, Pages, Numbers are free, then it's cool. wtf do people want!? why does everyone hate everything, what a joke.

I cant speak for everyone but ill delete those too I dont need them on my phone especially GarageBand and iMovie. Thank god they arent burried into the OS like the stupid Podcast & iBooks apps are now

It seems as this whole spectacle basically (and unsurprisingly) boils down to jealousy.
The problem doesn't seem to be the gesture itself, but the fact that the album was by U2.

People recognize that there are other people out there who actually like U2 and virtually received free money by not having to purchase the album. People then feel cheated because it wasn't their favorite artist so they could also save some cash.

We see similar behavior any time a popular paid app goes on sale and people feel ripped off for paying full price because others got a good deal. As if someone else spending more or less money somehow affects their own purchase.

Self-entitled, ungrateful loud-mouths on the Internet. Nothing new to see here. Move along.

Not at all. Maybe for some, but your conclusion is too generic. This is a naff gesture that indicates that Apple is out of tune with what its customers want. In many cases it doesn't matter because Apple actually demonstrate to me that I didn't know what I wanted, but in the case of music they simply demonstrate that they really know nothing of this content and they come across as the embrarrassing uncle trying to be cool. I'm not cool, but then I don't dance at cool people's parties!

Do people react this way when the waiter gives them a bowl of sugar sachets for their coffee?

No - they just don't use it.

Any reason for whining at all? Nope. I wonder if the whiners are the kind of people who moaned to Microsoft when they found out they had the free XP sample music and images? :D :D

GREAT song, by the way:

I thought it was more about being used as a pawn in someone else's game.

or ...

1. Complain about unwanted iTunes SPAM that was pushed on you without your permission.
2. Wait for others to complain
3. Use the Removal tool Apple creates after they realize how stupid it was of them to do this in the first place.

Sorry, I didn't grow up in a privileged middle-class white family, thus I can't proceed with step number one. My upbringing has forced me to discriminate between hyperbole and genuine travesties of injustice and to conserve my outrage for the latter, which prevents me to see a free album by an important band that's been around for thirty-five years as "spam" or "highly offensive" or whatever other hyperbole users wish to use.

I guess hatred for U2 is greater than love for Apple.

Having a free album show up under "purchases" seems to be too much for many to handle. And in the event that the album was automatically downloaded, chewed up what, 50MB?

And yet for years Apple has forced the iOS updater to download to iOS devices and occupy 1GB or more of space that could only be recovered by upgrading and yet many came to Apple's defense for that behavior. Thankfully, Apple included the ability to remove the updater with iOS 7 and onward.

What an odd bunch.

David Byrne is waiting for you... he's sitting on the hard disk in your attic :D

Apple sell product in Europe through European registered companies. What does the US have to do with that? IP ownership? What? Tell me what the US did to earn the right to a slice of European cash in this case?

It's a bit like the US v MS case where the US government believes that it has rights to any data held in foreign lands that are ultimately owned by a US based company. MS are rightly scared that if they lose in a US court, all that will happen is the rest of the world will transfer services to non-US based companies.

The US needs to know that it doesn't have a right to tell the world how to operate. It has a right to contribute to the general consensus; but that's it.

Please please don't take the "Oh you're just jealous of the US' success, because most of the rest of the world lives in countries that once owned that badge and we've all lost it because that's just the way it goes.

China and only China has the right to play that card because they've spent more years at the top of the charts than anyone and look intent of getting back to the top.

Edit: let's play a game of what if: I am a UK citizen and have been since birth. My wife is French and always has been. My father-in-law owns property in France. When he dies, I will make money from his death. Since I am a UK citizen, but he is French, who gets the tax? If we follow US tax law, then it would be both the French and the UK governments. Not very American if you look at it in that context. Almost socialist in its thinking ;-)

I have my reasons for not liking Bono and have held them for many years. Nothing to do with his music. His work being force fed onto my phone offended me due to my reasons for disliking him, so I'm glad it's deleted.

They payed $100.000.000,- to have some old musicians to perform 1 song at their event :)

Maybe an Art/Music scholarship program would be better received.....

Instead of doing what they did they should leave us alone and respect our choices.

But that's not how Apple operates, it's always all about them.

We're just the customers that pay them handsomely.. :)

That would make too much sense. Some people just love to go ******* over nothing. Really annoying.

At least they didn't say "Viola!" - that would have been ironic, since I was just reaching for mine to play a sad song of sympathy...

Can't say that I do.
But it wouldn't be a problem either way, because guess what – I didn't download the album to my iPhone.
It was entirely optional, so I chose not to. This album was never on my iPhone and likely never will be.

It still plays from the cloud on devices especially the Apple TV. So it is a legit problem for users who don't want it.

It's about as much of a "problem" as is a box of chocolates left on the doorstep of someone who doesn't like chocolate.

I wonder how many people would moan if they couldn't find it AT ALL, or if Apple had a glitch whereby people were seeing it listed as full price? MANY MANY.
