Needs to cut down more in price. Update of the pro should be in October since the current model was announce in October last year. The Samsung tablets already have OLED in their $399 tablets. Apple iPad pros needs OLED and a price drop.

The premium over the base model for a 1TB drive is now $550, down from $750.

Samsung 970 EVO 1TB SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW) NVMe M.2 V-NAND Internal Solid State Drive: $169

That's still an absurd margin for something that takes additional cost to Apple to put in the device over the 64gb.

1TB of flash costs Apple no more than $150.

How this is seen as anything other than an insane money grab is beyond me. This is a $400 BS service charge.

Even worse considering you can get a 2TB Intel 660p NVME SSD for $180.

For the price of a blown up limited iPod you can build a nice desktop with money left over for a laptop and tablet.

Please don't hold your breath waiting for this functionality. Apple is slowly separating the iPhone from iTunes, so before long you will no longer be able to backup/manage iPhone locally and will be forced to use iCloud. I've already started the transition, and its not so bad.
Backup, restore, updates, etc. for iOS devices are now built right into the Finder. It works pretty well actually.

I updated the post with a quote from the event.
OK thanks. That's REALLY vague. I don't think we can read much into that.

That really depends. Not everyone has good connectivity everywhere they go, and even when they do, you might not wan to download a 100GB file from iCloud when you need it.

I totally see the benefit to having a device where you can store all your data.

This, 100%. I use iMovie SOMETIMES. If you're editing a 4K project with 30 minutes of footage, between different projects and video cuts and apps, you could be using up to 100GB easily, even for a short time, even if your final product export ends up being a couple of gigabytes.

Really insulting that Apple still starts at 64GB when you can fill that with literally one sizable iMovie project.

You want more storage? That'll come at 4x the market price for storage. You already have a smaller device? Sucks to suck!

I have 2TB of iCloud storage and a 256GB iPad. my iPad offloads videos and stuff to iCloud, despite having ample space on my device. It's really annoying when I want to edit something and I need to wait a few minutes, in the foreground, for it to download.

How is it showing its age? Speed? Or RAM? Other? Just curious.

Yes, only the 1 TB model has 6 GB.

Personally I'm waiting for the next gen because I want a 128 GB model with 6 GB.

Honestly, I don't think Apple will do that...I think it more likely that they will continue 64GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and reserve the 6GB of DRAM for the 1TB only. Or put in 6GB of DRAM across the board but leave the same storage points. Remember when Apple introduced the very first iPad Pro in 2015 with only 32GB of storage for $799? Expect at least one more Gen of the iPP with 64GB starting storage.

I'm tempted by the cost reduction, although if the the 2020 iPad Pro ends up with the identical three camera system of the iPhone 11 Pro, that would be my next purchase.

Agreed. I understood that statement to mean: within the last year we have updated all of the iPads except this one we’re announcing today.

iPad Pro is not on a one-year refresh cycle, it’s something like 16-18 months. I personally don’t expect an update until around March.

Samsung makes their own panels, they can afford to use them. OLED panels meeting Apple’s requirements, at 11 to 13” could add $300 or more to the selling price.

While an entry level 11" at 128 GB would be perfect for me, I would consider a 256 GB model too.

Truthfully, I don't really need 6 GB, but I can wait nonetheless, so I may as well wait. My wife is only mildly complaining that she is currently iPad-less. I figure I have a few months before she gets too annoyed for not having an iPad (which would be my hand-me-down 2017 10.5" Pro). :D

It's something like 16 months, but it's hard to say since there have only been 3 generations total. However, a pre-Xmas update after 12 months would be good for sales, esp. in the era of iPadOS 13 and Photoshop for iPad. I betcha Photoshop for iPad will get a prominent on-stage showing in October.

I've tried to make this argument with the Intel SSDs before and got attacked by people for using a cheap SSD for comparison, so I went high-end. Still insane. Samsung has a 4TB SATA SSD for $500.

I'll probably buy the lowest-end model next time and use external storage. I'm so done paying Apple Tax on storage upgrades.

Feel free to let us know when you have designed and developed your own tablet and plan on releasing it to the public, we'd love to know how much its going to cost to purchase at launch. We'll be waiting...most of us have the time, some don't...be mindful.

You'd better hope Apple and 3rd party applications will make better use of external storage.

While this new external storage feature in iPadOS is very welcome, it's currently still a PITA. You can't treat it like internal storage yet, and some applications don't even recognize it. That will change, but if you need the storage soon to actually use it seamlessly on your iPad, I'd suggest you buy it as internal storage.

In my case all I need is 128 GB, so it's not as critical for me. I can even function fine with 64 GB with my current usage, but it's cramped.

No, the explanation is they can market the lower price point, and then up sell you to the 256. Hardly anyone buys the 64.

That doesn't explain the difference in price between the storage options... Make the 256gb version $100 bucks more than the 64gb, not $150. Or maybe since appletv+ is included for a year they are making their money back that way too.

That's not really the answer, because it doesn't address how iCloud fits in. iCloud enables a lot of offloading. It isn't necessary to keep your entire file history on your device anymore, so people don't. You can keep what you're currently working on, which even for the things you describe are not going to eat up more than a few GB at a time.

The same person can be equally successful with a 256 GB iPad as a 1 TB iPad.

So OP's question remains of what is the actual use case for a 1 TB iPad.

Not true. If you have to work in remote locations, you may not have the luxury of the high speed connection that iCloud, Dropbox, or even our own intranet requires.

Here's a more complete scenario for you: I have to work on a remote demolition job and follow complex plans, and per regulations have to have gigs worth of safety documents and scans, and other data that can be presented to customers and officials as required. Many of these files can be over a half of a gigabyte or more in size. We also have to document (high res video and photos) existing condition for legal purposes, etc. Is my 1TB full, no. It's about 50% often enough though. I want and often need the buffer and minimal speed increase the extra space allows.

I'm on it! Let me know when tickets for your Apple Justification Tour go on sale!

Back in March I got a brand new 12.9" 1TB Pro for $1,450 on Amazon. At the time, that was $300 less than Apple was asking.

Now that Apple prices are $200 less, I wonder if Amazon prices will continue to undercut by a similar amount.

I was afraid about this. Would offloading files to local storage and then importing to apps work better?

Just get the 128G... oh wait
