If you can stand to wait, I would wait. Apple tends to make uneventful announcements like this (announcements with no keynote) when they release incremental upgrades before a major release. That's what this release is. We'll more than likely be seeing a new case design in late 2019 or early 2020 at the latest. That doesn't mean the keyboard will be any different, as the new chassis may end up looking the same but with a reduction in the bezel to compliment a 16" screen. That being said, I have some hope that the cacophony of people upset with the keyboard, Touch Bar and minimal ports has made its way into Apple. No machine will ever be perfect, and I'm sure that the next one will still make a lot of people mad, but I'm hoping for the best. iPhone sales are slowing down significantly. Perhaps that will provide some incentive for Apple to turn back to the Pro market a bit more??

The keyboard is dodgy, and my coworker has issues with his late 2018 MBP keys already. I cannot completely trust that this time it's really fixed, but I certainly hope so. The keyboard concern is valid.

Most people who complain about the dongle life could just buy new cables and drives. If you still have a USB-A HDD, it's time to get an external SSD. 10x faster, no moving parts, no failure if you drop it, it fits in your palm and weighs nothing. You can actually get a USB-C mouse. A few professional devices are still USB-A, like screen calibrators, aviation, automobile, industrial instruments. Most consumers don't have to deal with USB-A that much anymore, and very small adapters are available. PC manufacturers have mostly removed their USB-A connectors as well, at least on ultrabooks.

Although I would still love an SD card reader built in, the world is moving towards micro SD (GoPro, DJI, pocketable devices) and CFast (professional cameras). I always use much faster external readers, and if I don't have one with me, I can always connect the camera directly.

I'm on a Dell because I'm a Windows developer, and running Windows natively is significantly faster and more heat-efficient than VMware on top of macOS. Windows laptops aren't perfect, either. They have throttling and thermal issues as well, and at some point my Dell frequently turned on automatically inside my backpack, getting searing hot, like an oven. The latest firmware update fixed that. Last year a Windows update wiped everything in my Documents folder. There are constant wifi disconnects. It takes 30 seconds to wake it after opening the lid, while a MacBook wakes instantly. Nothing is perfect, guys.

Fanboy? Nope, nice try - though using that phrase speaks volumes about yourself. If I was unhappy (features, performance, usability, etc) with Apple products I'd drop them in a minute.

If you're unhappy with Apple products you might consider doing the same thing. It does take courage, though. Whining on a forum, while making you feel good with that tiny blip of power, is a waste of time.

I've had at least 20 Apple products (probably more) over the last few decades. The only issues (and required repairs) I've had were with both of my cheese grater MacPros. But that was when Apple was lead under a different CEO.

I won’t drop Apple in a minute. For many products there are no good alternative options if you value privacy. It’s a conundrum.

Seriosuly, the design was introduced in late 2016. It's only 30 months old. I much rather see regular updates to GPU, Processors, RAM, keyboards than a design update which will probably be flawed in its first generation anyway.

But the point is, as I see it, that the design has been made obsolete by virtue of the thermal characteristics of the current generation of Intel chips. I think we can agree that the design isn't very old, but the design should be judged based on how well it works, not on how old it is.
[doublepost=1558553831][/doublepost]I'll upgrade when it gets a keyboard that performs as flawlessly as my mid-2012 MBP's... and has no display or thermal throttling issues either... and doesn't sacrifice substance for form factor. Hoping I don't have to wait too much longer.

What do you really expect to happen in a year regarding a new Apple laptop?

People will still be whining about the keyboard even though it will likely be just fine.

People will still be moaning about "throttling" even though it may not. And with that complaining the GPU isn't "pro" level.

People will engage in the typical juvenile burns about it being "too thin."

There will be moans about "dongles." Because after all, who wants to spend $3K for a laptop and then have to open their wallets to spend $20 for a couple of modern cables?

Are you really expecting a thicker laptop with USB ports, an SD card, a keyboard with more travel, and MagSafe?

And of course it will cost way too much and have the typical 5% speed bump due to Intel's glacial improvements.

If you are so disappointed with Apple, why not just go with a different manufacturer and enjoy a thicker and heavier laptop computer festooned with ancient I/O?

They can do a lot of things in a year but they clearly have no motivation. I get it, it’s all about profits these days.

It’s also not just the keyboard that’s the problem it’s just not a pro laptop anymore. I don’t want the touchbar for example but we don’t have an option to get rid of it.

My work requires me to be on Mac OS so I don’t have a choice. I don’t even care about the price because I wouldn’t pay for it. I’m stuck with the 2015 model at this point.

I still use macOS basically because Windows laptops are not as reliable. I was going the Dell XPS way but, like you said, it has a lot of problems, specially with Dell + Windows combo.

Btw, about replacing HDD for SSDs... Well, you can't replace 8TB drives with SSDs tbh.
I 100% agree with 1TB compact external drives. The USB-C ssd drivers are tiny and blazing fast.

I’m bummed they are not releasing updated non-Touchbar macs anymore, I guess the people that want a tactile function row are perceived a small minority?

Until Apple release a MBP 15" both with and without touch bar, they will never know. It certainly would be interesting to see which one would sell better.

I’m not going to respond to anything on this thread right now because it’s pointless. One thing to keep in mind when you’re making a buying decision, though, is that any machine you by i’m not going to respond to anything on this thread right now because it’s pointless. One thing to keep in mind when you’re making a buying decision, though, it’s of having a machine around for years that will boot at least into Mojave and the whole world of 32 bit applications that will soon be eclipsed.

Apple’s website says:
The 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar feature a keyboard with a quieter typing experience.

I have no 32bit apps installed and I will certainly not be missing them when they are gone forever, but I understand that there might be others that rely on such apps. Apple has to move forward though and cannot support 32bit forever. I know that Microsoft is still doing that and will continue doing that for (most probably) ever, but Microsoft has a completely different situation, with many enterprise customers. Apple is in a position to do things like that much easier. It might be painful for some at the beginning, but people will adapt. They always have.

Well, they are quieter than before. I don't know though if there is any difference between the 2018 and 2019 models. I guess we will find out soon. I don't know if it's just my ears, but for me the MBP 2018 is not loud when typing. I find it actually to be ok, not very different than other keyboards. Maybe I got used to it too much...

Same here, I'm not upgrading until they bring back the function keys, and it can be in addition to the touchbar, but I want them.

Also, please give us more than 4 usbc ports, this defeats the purpose or a compact machine, now I have to carry dongles around...
Yeah, I simply went to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard and chose Touch Bar shows F1, F2, etc Keys and Press Fn key to Show Control Strip. I also have my ESC key visible at all times, along with the Fn keys up at all times when I am using Terminal, so I am not exactly sure what physical Fn keys is going to give you that you cannot get with the Touch Bar now?

It would be helpful if Apple could give us 2 extra USB-C Gen 2 ports (1 one each side) to use for the power cable and another device, while freeing up the TB3 ports for more important things.

I carry a TB3-->TB2 and a USB-C-->USB-A dongle and that is it, YMMV.

A macrumors member?! How ... the hell... is this possible?!?!?!?!

Loving my 2017 MBP 13'. I'm happy with the news too. Oh crap, run!

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro and I am pretty happy overall. Occasionally, I have to hunt for a USB-C to something cable, but that's more to do with my office being a wreck, currently (working on that this weekend), than anything to do with Apple.

I do wish the battery life was a bit longer though. I think that is my only real complaint with the thin chassis - not being able to fit a bigger battery. I will say though that my battery has been doing incredibly well as of late, although when it gets low, I do not ignore its warnings the way I did with my 2015.

When will we start seeing reviews online about the new 15” MBP keyboard testing and quietness?

Don’t forget real world cpu/gpu performance.
I hope the keyboard issues many have had are fixed. Not trying to get into battle over how many, just clearly enough Apple has publicly addressed the issue, so I don’t think it’s just MR malcontents or trolls. If they fix issues, that will be huge and make a lot of people happy and perhaps pulling out the credit card.... I think it’s only fair to let Apple prove if they have addressed keyboard concerns and not just assume the worst.

Right now it says May 24th is the "Fastest" date at the bottom of the Apple order page for the 15" MacBook Pro. I expect it will be later that day or over the weekend that someone will put together a video and drop it on YouTube.

Can someone boil down the thread for me?

No one is happy, right?

No one who was previously unhappy is happy, that's for sure. It's the same tired litany of gripes that I have read since the day they announced the 2016 MacBook Pro. It goes like this -

- Too expensive
- Useless Touch Bar
- No NVIDIA? WTF is a Radeon Pro?
- Bring back SD, HDMI, USB-A, MagSafe...or else!
- Glowing Apple is missing :(
- Too expensive
- Keyboard sucks
- Just bring back the 2015 and update its guts
- Too expensive

Lather, rinse, repeat ad nauseam....

Oh, and those self same posters are really upset that Apple probably isn't releasing the rumored 16" MBP this year that they want to bring all that stuff back, have 10nm CPUs which Intel said wouldn't be here until Q4 2020 and a lower price by ~$300, so there is that as well.

It's basically the unhappiest place on Earth, as expected.

Yes because only Dell makes high end windows laptops.

Since the i7 in the base 15 is 9th gen which no longer support hyperthreading, then the base model is back to 6 threads only - down from 12 threads of the previous gen base model. Which looks like a step backwards as far using these for multi-core aware apps.... I wonder what the real world differences are between the 9th gen i7 2.6 and the 8th gen i7 2.2?
