for keyboard only, you should be covered by the program and not need Apple Care. regarding potential cost; my battery quit charging on my 2016 15" pro. the repair included a full top case and keyboard since its all glued together. invoice cost showed $900 but it was all warrantied.

HOLY CRAP!

Yeah, I think this just sold me to get the AppleCare. Like with it, and with no personal fault, they usually either repair or upgrade right? I just realised, everything is glued in, at least in my older 2012non retina, I could upgrade ssd and ram to max and replace just as easily. Here, that's glued in to the motherboard right?

Applecare, yep yep!!

The entire MacBook lineup right now consists of Soldered RAM, CPU and Storage. none of these can be upgraded or repaired outside of Apple. Apple will most likely only replace entire laptop segments when an of these go bad

The new keyboards are also bolted directly to the frame. Should the keyboard fail, it requires a replacement o the entire top chassis of the laptop.

Why is the T2 chip a problem? I am looking to upgrade from a 13" mid 2014 and I cannot decide for which generation of 15" to go.

Ever since Apple has started putting the T2 chip in computers, people have reported getting random T2 bridgeOS crashes. Apple has greatly reduced the crashes by updating MacOS and the computer firmware but has been unable to eliminate them completely.

I would suggest that you skim the 138 pages in the MBP T2 thread.

edit: All current versions of the MBP have a T2.

Did they revise the cooling? Because the i7 was already faster than the i9 in certain tasks because of throttling. Now with an 8-core it will only be worse. Unless they’ve redesigned cooling.

We’ve all grown used to Macs not hitting anywhere near advertised speeds both in iMac and MBP, but some progress here would be welcome.

Cooling is likely the same since the press release doesn’t mention any changes to cooling.

I don’t think the 8 core will be any worse on heat production than before. Performance wise it should always be better in multithreaded tasks over 6 and 4 core models as well. So if you’re in single thread land you can skip the 8 core, but multithreaded apps will benefit a lot.

Good news, hopefully the updated keyboard addresses the issues people have been having.

I entered my 2015 MacBook Pro 2.8/16GB/1TB into their trade-in system, they’d give me a $975 credit for it. I can’t even get anything refurbished with 16GB/1TB for less than $2699 though.

Apple charges way too much for internal storage in their laptops, and it’s not even upgradable after 2015. They charge $600 to opt for 1TB rather than 256GB. You can buy 2TB NVMe sticks for $309.

Don't the Surface Pro machines use LPDDR3 just like the 13" Pro? It has to do with power consumption. Would it make a real-life difference to you anyway?

They only put DDR4 in their desktop line, so I stand corrected. The fact I can get an exact-spec (i5/8gb/256) Surface Laptop 2 as the 13" MBP for $1k less is pretty significant, however... not to mention the keyboard will work.

I also don't think power consumption is the issue when they are putting DDR4 in the 15"...

Why are they still putting that crusty 720p FaceTime camera in it?

No kidding, eh?! Even my 2013 MacBook Air has this camera. Shameful that a Pro machine, with a premium price would skimp on something like this.

But then again, maybe they know that this camera is rarely used? Some people even have it taped over, so why put in a more expensive camera that only a small percentage of people actually use?

What? I had to hit refresh thinking that this was an April fools headline.

I will have to wait and see how these perform.

Edit: My spacebar stuck about 10 times while typing out this post (MBP 2017).

The changes may eliminate mechanical failures, but they don't address the fundamental fact that these butterfly keyboards are simply not very good for typing.

It looks like I'll be moving out of the Apple eco-system and back to a Windows laptop. I'm a web developer and the keyboard is to my work what a brush is to an artist. I need a comfortable and reliable keyboard. MacBook Pro laptop keyboards haven't been comfortable and reliable since they shipped with butterfly mechanism keyboards. I can get an excellent 15" Lenovo ThinkPad for less than half the price of these new models. The laptop has always been the center of my computing experience. Without a Mac laptop, I don't have any reason really to continue using an iPhone, and if the iPhone goes, so does the iPad too. It's sad, really, as I've been with Apple since the first iPod. But that's all over now.

Haha, I knew this is exactly what Apple would do. There is no way they were going to backtrack on the butterfly keyboard. They designed it, so they know best, regardless of how many people hate it.

Normally, I'd be a little upset since I just bought a 2018 MBP 2 months ago. However, considering I got it $800 off, there's been no graphics increase for 2019, and there's potential for thermal throttling, I don't mind. In fact, I'm ecstatic that my keyboard is now covered by the repair program as that was my main concern for this computer and I gambled and didn't get AppleCare for it.

We should play a betting game here how long before somebody complain about the keyboard. :D
