I don't know. I just tried the Yoga 2 Pro 13,3" tablet at a store - it's too heavy to use as a "tablet". Maybe Apple can pull off some hardware magic and make it weigh less than 500 grams. I owned a tablet once - didn't use it much. On the road nothing beats a phone and at home nothing beats a fully functional computer. Let's see how Apple will make us gadget hungry this time.

How can something with no release date be delayed? *confusion* Sounds like a riddle.

Oh, to be a tech analyst. One can always twist or narrate the story so that their own guesses or time table is never wrong.

'Delays'

An iPad Pro isn't happening until there's a new iOS with Pro-only features, to help it sell.

You pretty much nailed it. iOS 9 will have a lot of optomization for a 12" iPad. Also, I'm sure the same 12" screen line is used for the new Mac Air with a 12" screen. When that is in the distribution lines, then this line builds the 12" iPad.

I think many people that know me think I am Apple's ideal customer - over the years I seem to have ended up with almost one of everything they make, somewhere in the house: phones, tablets, desktops, mobiles, portable music devices, even things to plug into the TV. And I think I will probably be adding a :apple:Watch to the collection, even though I know full well that the V2 version will be thinner (as Apple makes everything thinner with each iteration) and have a better battery life.

But despite being a seemingly devoted customer, I'm completely "meh" about the 12" iPad - unless it's got some killer feature like it runs OS X or something. I upgraded my iPad 3 to an Air 2 and was unimpressed with the lack of difference. Yes, it's noticeably faster, and a lot lighter, but neither of these things really change my experience. I'm not surprised that iPad sales are dipping - the previous generations are good enough for pretty much everyone, so no-one needs to upgrade.

I don't see me getting a 12" model unless it has some unexpected killer feature. A larger screen size is a turn-off for me - less portable...

One thing you can bank on is one of the current iPad sizes will be killed if a 12" comes to pass. My Bet is the mini will die because it bumps up pretty close to the iPhone 6plus.

More likely Apple still needs software for this giant thing.
I think it will sell well, but there needs to be some change to IOS for it, dual display apps is a must.

Reminds me of the Commodore Amiga. A great product ahead of its' time that satisfied customers for a long long time. By releasing such a product Commodore put itself out of business. Volvo almost did the same thing...

Now you know why your 2 year old iPhone becomes slow after an update...

Should really look more like this... Not just an oversized iPad 2/3/4.

Was hoping it would be in the 3X2 aspect ratio format. 4X3 is getting to be too old.
Nope, it's not a movie machine, it's a tablet.

I know it's a whole lot more, but, to get very basic, the whole idea behind the iPad is to eliminate the need for documents, pen and paper, and such. it's not going to ever be a "laptop replacement". It was never meant to be that.

If you watch Star Trek the Next Generation, they don't ever use paper for anything, paper is outdated. That's kind of the idea.

A larger iPad (iPad Plus?) will come in handy for showing people their MRI/x-ray etc., can run 2 apps side by side (this was already seen in a pre-release beta of iOS 8), large enough to replace magazines, better for maps & manuals for airline pilots, could work for drawing with a pen, and many more uses. With the 1st gen iPad, lawyers could essentially eliminate their briefcase.

A larger iPad will simply be that, an iPad with a larger screen, just like the iPad Mini is an iPad with a smaller screen. There's very little else different besides the size of the screen.

You got that right. My 1st Gen iPad still does 95% off what I need a tablet for and if it would have shipped with more RAM it would probably be 100%. I am more than convinced there is a black ops team at apple devoted to nothing but subtle iDevice strangulation scripts in new iOS's.

How funny would it be if there were NEVER any plans to produce an iPad Pro and this is all just the figment of the imagination of those "unnamed sources". Maybe some of it planted by Apple, who knows. The whole idea of an iPad Pro just seems really silly to me. I don't exactly see people in companies clamoring to use an iPad anymore so to design something specifically for enterprise use seems weird. But what do I know!

That's exactly why I think this thing is just a unicorn. There's no reason for such an iPad to exist except for very, very limited scenarios. Why would you mobilize your army of suppliers for something like this? There has to be something more. And if there isn't, then it never was meant to be in the first place despite what all these in-the-know journalists have been saying.

i don't think those are unreasonable assumptions. but - here's hoping they go with two new larger iPads (like releasing the i6 and i6+ at once), but make one of the 12"ers a true Pro. a surface pro killer.

merely releasing a 'bigger iPad air' in 2015 - at the END of 2015 - will be such an incredible drag and a bore.

"a surface pro killer."? really? microsoft is really trying too hard with that thing.

The only real competitor to the iPad in the tablet market is Samsung.

I was thinking of pro photographers using DSLRs and would like to see their pictures displayed properly (without the black bars on top and bottom).

Yes, I have the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation series on Blu-ray. Yeah, what is paper.

I wouldn't think of having the iPad any wider. 3X2 is the sweet spot.

If they want this to be "pro" they should just combine the "retina macbook air" with this product. Put a CoreM processor in there so it can run OS X proper and have a svelt keyboard accessory that also has an auxiliary battery. Done.

If they wanted to do both, surely they could also run iOS in a "dual-boot" configuration. They could either virtualize iOS or have it run on a dedicated ARM processor. Dual-boot is in quotations because I imagine it not actually requiring a reboot, much like that android/windows hybrid device (can't remember the make) which switched between the two somewhat seemlessly.

This is a Bloomberg fail. They were the ones who originally claimed an early 2015 release date.

I'd get one. I think this will encourage the app developers to make even better design apps. I love iDraw for quick website mockups on the go. But I wish Adobe would just stop being stupid and do their own Photoshop mini (properly this time).

The bigger screen would make it easier to use with apps like this as it does feel cramped with iDraw on the 9 inch.

Coda is brilliant. Can't wait for that next update. Come onnnnn Coda.

With that said, all the serious work would probably still be done on a Mac. But I can see a future with robust apps where one could design and code sites on an iPad. I think iOS would need a bit of advancing in the file organization department though. And the hardest thing would be fonts. Maybe they'll allow us to install fonts some day. Now THAT would help design apps move forward big time.
