I know this isn't MacFacts.. But seriously, can't some threshold be applied to these utterly unsubstantiated ego trips?!

the threshold is "will it get page hits"

if yes it gets posted, if no it might not

----------

No way I'm getting one with those thick bezels.

if this whale exists it would likely be the same form as the iPad Air. not the older Gens

----------

It needs iOS tweaks. Or to run OS X. In fact I think i'll bank on the latter over the former.

Apple has basically said that iOS is the touch version of Mac OS so don't hold your breath

still calling it iPad "Pro"? If they were going to call it that, then they would have called the iPad Mini iPad Kids instead. I do see this happening, but, the rumor mill started the "Pro" name out of some strangeness.

Remember everyone calling the Apple TV iTV before it came out? How about the iWatch?

Apple called it the iTV. Watch the keynote where it was previewed.

"a surface pro killer."? really? microsoft is really trying too hard with that thing.

no joke. before Apple or anyone worries about making a Surface killer they need to feel threatened. i haven't see overwhelming numbers that show that the Surface is really an issue for the iPad.

The only real competitor to the iPad in the tablet market is Samsung.

i would argue that it isn't. Because Samsung is using Android. Folks that want to be in that ecosystem might get Samsung over other Android tablets sure. But there are plenty of folks in the iOS system that aren't going to get a Samsung cause it doesn't work together as nicely.

----------

Likely, in other words— "Our prediction was wrong so we'll blame it on supply issues."

That's typical analyst games. They hype up something to drive up the share value and then in order to not look like idiots they make up rumors about issues in production etc. value goes down, they buy in cheaper, then hype something new

Perfect.

1. First, the delay issue. A non-issue. iPads last forever; there really is no hurry to upgrade an iPad if one already has one. And if one doesn't have an iPad by now, a few months will hardly matter. But getting the announcement out is important....

2. I still use my original iPad and my wife's second generation iPad. For surfing the net, they will last forever. However, I want to upgrade; I've been looking at the smaller iPads but held off; for some reason I wasn't sure about them. But the larger edition is perfect -- great for watching movies. Perhaps not as good for reading the news first thing in the morning but maybe the 2nd generation iPad at the bedside for reading news/e-mail and using the larger iPad for watching movies, etc.

It looks like the delay will allow me to buy an Apple Watch first.

'Delays'

An iPad Pro isn't happening until there's a new iOS with Pro-only features, to help it sell.

Pretty sure the pro features Apple could just as well make Pro-model exclusive to give you another one of those "can't go with base model" reasons.
100$ on top of the normal iPad at least.

I mean, sure they could make some pro features trickle down to other models, maybe even all of them, but my feelings aren't too rosy about this.

With that said, all the serious work would probably still be done on a Mac.

define "serious work"

I work in film. On sets, up to 6 days a week and up to 16 hours a day. In particular my job is that of coordination and record keeping. I have used an iPad and iPhone and only those for a good year and a half. Given that a screw up in my job duties can literally cost hundreds of dollars an hour I'd say its pretty serious

----------

Never really thought it would launch before the next annual iPad refresh. I just hope they move the iPhone annual refresh back to June or July so everything doesn't all come out at the same time. IMO that's why iPad sales are struggling.

iPhone sales aren't going anywhere. They like doing the new iOS and hardware together too much. And they love having the preview at WWDC since that is what developers are all about.

I suspect that the claims of 'struggling' sales are overblown. Sure they aren't likely selling as many and sales numbers aren't rising by leaps and bounds every month. But there are tons of sales. More and more companies and schools grabbing iPads. Heck on the lot where my company has offices we had a sit down in November with no less than 10 other production companies who wanted to know about how we use our iPhones and iPads on set and I know at least 3 of them in the past 2 months decided to buy cause my company has worked with them on stuff.

Steve never said that. Its really getting lame that folks keep using the same misquote.

Go back and watch the keynote. He said 'required' styli were the issue. the phones and PDAs of that time didn't work if you lost the pen. So the iPhone was made such that the only 'stylus' you needed was your finger. Nothing was ever said against using a stylus if you wanted to. heck they even sold them in the stores the first couple of years.

it's not going to sell well without a more desktop-like operating system. it needs something to take advantage of the bigger screen, and it needs to be able to do more than one thing on the screen at a time.

I just meant personally. And by serious I'd mean doing s full and proper website mockup. And creating icons, imagery, etc, saving those in their proper optimized formats, and I can type faster on a physical keyboard for coding.

Plus I'd need to test multiple browsers and resolutions. I guess there's Sauce Labs for that, though I've never tried using it on an iPad. But still, I like doing testing in a desktop unless I'm testing how it'd look on iPad.

I think many people that know me think I am Apple's ideal customer - over the years I seem to have ended up with almost one of everything they make, somewhere in the house: phones, tablets, desktops, mobiles, portable music devices, even things to plug into the TV. And I think I will probably be adding a :apple:Watch to the collection, even though I know full well that the V2 version will be thinner (as Apple makes everything thinner with each iteration) and have a better battery life.

But despite being a seemingly devoted customer, I'm completely "meh" about the 12" iPad - unless it's got some killer feature like it runs OS X or something. I upgraded my iPad 3 to an Air 2 and was unimpressed with the lack of difference. Yes, it's noticeably faster, and a lot lighter, but neither of these things really change my experience. I'm not surprised that iPad sales are dipping - the previous generations are good enough for pretty much everyone, so no-one needs to upgrade.

I don't see me getting a 12" model unless it has some unexpected killer feature. A larger screen size is a turn-off for me - less portable...

Hey, to each their own. I'm definitely waiting for a 12"+ iPad model.
I'm waiting to convert my 20kg piles of music sheets to scan in and use on a device that's close in size to a standard A4 or US letter page.

At the same token, I don't care about a tiny watch screen. What makes you think battery life would improve in successive iterations ? Apple does make it thinner, but battery life typically remains the same.

oh look an apple product with a delay due to display supply? big surprise! wouldnt be an apple product unless its a year behind schedule due to display problems.

maybe if theyd quit using crappy LCDs that have poor yields and horrible QC they could get something out the door on time besides the iPhone. Amazing how the moneymaker always seems to be on time...

So the report is basically that a new iPad is expected around the time of year they usually release new iPads. Doesn't really sound like a delay...

I thought this white whale was supposed to come out in 'fall' 2014?

no way - what tablet competes with the surface? none of them. the surface is the future (and don't get me wrong, i still think the iPad is 'generally' superior for the average consumer). microsoft simply isn't apple, so it won't stick. apple probably knows this, which would explain their lack of enthusiasm in getting into that demo. oh, they know.

imagine a competent ipad pro for just a second. ahhhh.

i guess you might have to be a certain personality type. the type who supported apple as the underdog for more than a decade.

i don't think anyone - especially apple - thinks that those are remotely similar product categories. people are fine with charging their phone everyday. UX is a prime focus for apple, and i don't think this part of your comment will hold true at all by apple watch gen 2-3.

Come on man use your brain: MacBook Air : MacBook Pro, iPad Air : iPad Pro. It's not a stretch to call it that name. Maybe instead of criticizing you could come up with an alternative placemark for possible name for the device.

I'm okay with the delay. I skipped the iPad Air 2, so I'll probably get the larger iPad. This time of year is not good, though, because we have a baby due at the beginning of May.

I'm not sure about September, though. Two more babies due in October. Triplets! We're gonna need a bigger car, too.

----------

so just a bigger screen? geez, no wonder ipad sales have dropped.
What's an iPad anyway? Just an iPod Touch with a bigger screen, able to do the things you would like to do on an iPod Touch if it had a bigger screen, and a bigger battery, and display modes to take advantage of that bigger screen.

Now, if only Xcode would automatically handle the crapton of different versions of app icons we need to make for all these screen sizes! I have to get some other app to do the resizing then mess around putting the correct versions into the image assets file.

iPad Pro isn't too unlikely, but iPad Plus is more likely.
