Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I would never dream that a company has the power to hold a shipment in progress.
I would have thought, once it is out the door, UPS has control over it.

my uncle drives for ups he use to drive package trucks now he drives the 18 wheelers anyway he told me UPS doesnt hold packages if they get it at their facility before a certain they bring it out to your house no matter what the delivery day says. I dont know how that policy will affect the iphone shipments but that is what he told me. I know fedex doesnt do that because i have tracked packages from fedex that get to my local fedex center and they will hold it until the date that was promised to you.

The 3 'holding' notes were just removed from my UPS status, it's now clear for Thursday 6/18 delivery again.

Funny thing is after UPS removed the holds I got the following email from Apple. What a mess, haha.

To Our Valued Apple Customer:

Thank you for your recent order with Apple.

Our records indicate that your iPhone 3G S pre-order has shipped.

Our carrier's website may have displayed an incorrect delivery
date for your order. However, we expect your iPhone order to be
delivered on time on June 19, 2009.

Thank you for shopping at the Apple Online Store.

I'll be happy when it leaves Kentucky!

There was a lack of communication between Apple and UPS on this. Time in transit from China to most of the continental US is 2 to 3 business days pending normal customs clearance using the Express service. So packages that were shipped out on 6/15 and 6/16 normally would be delivered on 6/17 or 6/18. Thats probably why UPS was saying that originally. My guess is that someone at Apple whose job it is to monitor the bloggersphere probably saw all these people talking about they were getting their iphones early passed the info up to management, who then called UPS to put a hold on the shipment. This wouldn't have happened if Steve was back. ;)

My convo with UPS

I was told that the delay was a customs issue due to a dual point of origin. The shipment shows as having originated both in china and in Hong Kong which set off a red flag. I'm told that the issue is cleared and delivery was "guaranteed" to arrive before 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Let's hope.

So are you blaming the people on this forum for gloating about their potential early shipment?

Not just this site. It was on the front page of several sites talking about Early Delivery of new iphone. I believe that if it hadn't turned into such a big ordeal and if Apple hadn't been made aware of it then UPS would have still delivered the packages early. According to some UPS was saying as recently as a few hours ago that the packages were still going to be delivered on 6/18. Then all of sudden Apple starts to send out mass emails, then UPS is changing their story to match Apple.

Re: early delivery

I pre-ordered and received my 1st gen Ipod Touch several days before the "street" release date. That was the sole reason for my ordering directly from Apple as opposed to ATT.

Called back UPS

They said in no uncertain terms - Sorry you were given misinformation earlier about Thursday delivery; Apple asked us to hold all deliveries of the iPhone until Friday.

mines iphone is still in the 'prepared for shipment' phase. i was thinking it would have been shipped by now, but maybe tonight or tomorrow with overnight shipping

I received a nearly identical email several days ago on June 9 in response to Apple's website saying it would not be delivered until the 22nd.

My shipment originated from Texas and it's being delivered by UPS.

Either way it confirms that there are many shipments originating in the US that could easily get the phone from a warehouse in the US to your home by friday ... I think it would be tough if it left from china today.

I'm still showing three holds in the tracking and a delivery status of "exception", with the 6/19 guarantee email from Apple... Fun stuff. That's for phone #2, #1 is "Prepared for Shipment" and was ordered a whole seven minutes earlier. I'm betting on a Friday delivery on both for me. Now the question is, do I bother to upgrade my original, waited in line at AT&T for, 8gb to OS 3.0???

All the holds on mine have been removed as well, but I still have a 6/17 delivery date. Should I hold out hope for the last 30 minutes of the working day? ;)

The hold is no longer showing up on my tracking page. Last thing is the arrival scan at 2:06 AM EDT in Kentucky.

The delivery date of 6/18/09 is back on.

My hold is gone and my delivery date is back to what it was originally too.

Problem is it's still in KY, I'm in NY and the original delivery date is 6/17, so someone is lying - lol

I'm guessing UPS may have removed the hold in order to move them to destination hubs, at which time they'll probably be placed on "hold" again until Friday when they go out for delivery.

We'll probably see a departure scan within the next few hours.

I ordered my iPhone 3GS on June 10th at 4:14 PST. I received a "prepared for shipment" email on June 11th. That was the last I've heard from Apple. My order status has not changed. I did not select overnight shipping in the ordering process because the phrase "Delivered by June 19th" was plastered all over everything. My order status still says "delivered by June 19th," but I'm worried I haven't received and info yet.

What's also troubling is my mom says that her credit card was not charged. Also, under "Shipping Method" it says "Priority." Does this mean Apple is shipping me my iPhone through Priority Mail (which will take a week at best) or does it mean that my shipment is a priority to Apple and I'll receive it Friday?

I would have happily waited at the AT&T in the small town near where I live. I could have easily got in and got out but I figured getting it shipped to my door would be pretty cool.

Also, receiving my iPhone early would be a dream because I could activate it early and avoid the server slow down/crash like last year.

I've never ordered anything from the Apple Store before and I do not have an Apple Store within 150 miles of my house.

Any help or reassuring words would be appreciated.

Like many others I'm still in the Prepared for Shipment state still, despite ordering on day 1.

This is making me increasingly nervous, but I'm hopeful that maybe my phone is shipping from Apple's domestic stock (no doubt they have a stack of phones in Cupertino or elsewhere) and not directly from China.

I will be PISSED if it doesn't arrive Friday.

Ups

Wouldnt this be illegal, I paid for the phone and now the supplier is holding it back from me. Its not my fault the shipping is faster then they thought. Oh and I’m the receiver and I didn’t send any package back and requesting that it be delivered on a different day. That could be tampering with mail.

Tell your Uncle UPS can now do all sorts of fancy things with computers. This one is called "UPS Delivery Intercept":

"Have you ever sent a package and wished you could get it back before it was delivered? Or sent an important document to the wrong place? It happens all the time. That's why we offer UPS Delivery InterceptSM. You're in control - even after the package has left your hands. With UPS Delivery Intercept, you can:

- Return the shipment to you
- Redirect the package to another address
- Hold it for pickup or future delivery "

....

Second, Apple will not ship the product to any address other than the billing address. Believe me, Ive tried. Same issue happened to a friend of mine as well.

.....

This is 100% not true for me. I've ordered 2 Mac Pros, iMacs, and all kinds of items and had it shipped to a non billing address each time with no issues (it has two separate areas, one for billing address, and one for shipping). I even had a few items shipped to a 3rd address as a gift in someone else's name. I also ordered 2 iPhone 3Gs to a non billing address just fine (just in case there is a difference for phones).

You know your law pretty darn good. Are you Judge Sonya Sotomayor?

No

No

No, UPS != mail

Until it's delivered, it's not yours.

Fri Delivery

I just spoke to UPS international. They were told by Apple 'no deliveries' until Fri. They asked for my tracking # and guaranteed Fri by 10:30. Only problem, signature required & i'm not home. Once delivery is attempted you can call UPS & arrange to pick it up at depot. If you miss that, it's Mon. UPS sucks - not open Sat. Apple usually ships FedEx.
