Apple Delays iPhone 3G S Pre-Orders to Prevent Early Delivery?

about 5 minutes after my last post I got an email from Apple saying it's shipped to be delivered tomorrow via FedEx. Now I just need to figure out how to waive the signature requirement.
as is mine...starting to get worried if they are coming from China.
Here's my status incase it helps anyone:
6/17, 2:18 AM--Received shipment notification from Apple saying it was shipped and will deliver by 6/23.
6/17-Departed Shenzhen at 4:40 PM
Arrived Chek Lap Kok, HK (??) at 7:47 PM
6/17- Arrived in Anchorage, AK at 1:50 PM
Tracking number has not been updated since then.
6/18, 8:40 AM--Received email from Apple saying the incorrect arrival date was originally given & it will in fact arrive on the 19th.
Tracking still not updated since Anchorage. Just glad mine is coming UPS instead of FedEx.
Mine UPS tracking says the following:

Mine is supposedly still in Anchorage, but it's been there for like half a day now with no departure scan. My guess is that the UPS systems aren't updating properly at this point.
At least yours is on the way. Mine is still prepared for shippment. Seems they are handwrapping it personally...
Although I remember receiving stuff from them (from their local center though) only to get the shippment info on the day that it was already deliverd but I am afraid that that is not going to happen here...
iphone delivery
I call UPS this morning and they also told me that Apple is having them hold the phones until the 19th. I should receive mine around 10:30a.m. I don't have a problem with that. I have a problem with being mislead and told originally that I would receive it on the 17th. There is nothing more disappointing. Not to mention the fact that I have a life and planned things around the date. Thank the Lord UPS was honest and told me why the due date changed.

FWIW, I ordered 3Gs (my first iphone) on the 9th via Apple website (new customer over from TMO, of course after 8 years with TMO they have now finally just announced some reasonable phones, oh well).
My order still says 'not yet shipped' but the delivery date keeps fluctuating between the 22nd and 26th.
Not that it's a big deal, but I wonder how they mean first come first served when people who ordered on the 13th or 14th already have theirs out for delivery while mine seemingly hasnt left china yet. Definitely screwy.

AT&T Is Delaying Shipments Due to Incompetence
I ordered two 3G S iPhones on 6/9 online through the AT&T Premier store.
I've beeing checking the order status online, but it has not changed since the initital order. Today, I received a total of 4 emails from AT&T at the same time (in this order):
1. AT&T Premier Items on Back-order
2. AT&T Premier Order Shipment Notification
3. AT&T Premier Order Shipment Notification
4. AT&T Premier Items on Back-order
The shipment confirmation emails had a FedEx tracking number, but the FedEx website shows that the shipment information received, but not the shipment itself and the expected delivery date is 6/22 (using 2Day FedEx).
The AT&T Order Status page still says the following:
"We have received your order request, and we expect to begin processing it shortly," which has not changed since 6/9.
Bottom line is that I still don't know if I'm getting the iPhones on 6/22 or if they're on backorder. Either way, AT&T is clueless in the way they communicate.

if i ever get a shipping notice or anything i would like to head over to the apple store and buy some accessories to beat tomorrows crowds.
maybe they are filling the orders of the current customers first and making all new customers like myself wait...
Yikes. When I learned the data plan for the 3GS went up (On my 2G, I've had unlimited data AND 200 texts for $19.99) I started investigating how I could save money on my bill each month. I found out that since I work for a college I could sign up for premier, BUT I'd have to order my 3GS directly through AT&T which is the last thing I'd want to do. (Even before Iphones, I used to get my Treos directly through Palm.) Once my 3Gs arrives from Apple, I was thinking of signing up for Premier however. Then someone on here gave me the advice of dropping it before I place a future Iphone order, and then sign up again after it arrives. Has anyone else done that? While I've been pleased with Cingular/AT&T service & plans over the years, I do not want to have to deal with them in person or order equipment from them.

according to my roommate who tried to do a last minute pre-order. sometime yesterday Apple took down the pre-order page (well the pick a model part). so our guess is that they needed to cut the count so they could parcel out boxes of phones to overnight them to the stores for prep today to sell tomorrow.
it is likely that they will take the count of pre-orders, add like 20%, round up to the nearest 5 or 10 or 12 or whatever the units per box is and ship that to each store. that way the folks that didn't get the memo to pre-order won't stand in line for nothing. but it won't be as many and you might have to wait a while. I'd get there real early so you can be at the front of the 'no holds' area to be safe

I ordered on the 8th through apple shortly after the keynote ended. It appears that there is a stockpile somewhere in the US like others have been saying.
