Leopard is not a new OS. It's simply an update of OS 10. A new OS would be OS 11. Two and a half years for one decimal point update is a long, long time. Maybe Tiger will become the new XP SP2?

I don't know what you call an entire update to the underlying framework to be 64-bit native, but I call that a LOT of work. Don't let the "decimal point" fool you. This is the sixth version of OS X.

It is much easier (and less embarrassing) to blame it on the iPhone.

I actually think blaming it on the phone is more embarassing, because it shows that Apple has poor project planning, and that they've spread themselves too thin, or else that Macs and OS X have become low priorities. Speaking of which, haven't they seen the studies that show that adding more programmers to a project only exacerbates delays? I just watched a lecture yesterday talking about that.

Sorry, but after this delay announcement, it feels like this banner is true in more than one way:

I voted negative only because I'm slightly disappointed. :D It's not like the OS 9 to OS X nightmare I went through years ago. 10.4 is great and will hold me over until October. I can wait for a new Mac Pro then too. I just don't like the fact that they are placing the blame squarely on the iPhone. At first glance it just looks like the iPhone has taken priority over the Mac Computer Faithful. Just strange.

And for our patience, when we purchase a new Mac Pro with Leopard in October we'll all receive a free iPhone! Oh yeah, all the "secret features" are just iPhone integration apps :p I kid, I kid.

But this is almost as annoying as the iPod news gluttony for the last couple of years. I have an iPod, sure, but I can't make a living off of it. Jeez, that iPhone better be unfrickin'-believable when it's released.

or whatever was said during the last "Mac"world... the one whitout any Mac news, not much Mac stuff has been released since then. Apple dopping "computer"...

I think it's time to wake up and smell the coffee, computers are yesterdays technology. Apple is a visionary company, I don't think it will be long before the Mac is abandoned. Probably it will first be in the form of "we allow everyone to use OS/X" then license agreements whith some Chinese company to take over more and more of the manufacturing and then an outright sale of the Mac brand.

I predict this will have happened in 1-2 years time... People will bitch and moan for a while and then accept it then applaud Apple for it. (kind of like the Intel transition)
I fear you maybe right. Mac OS has been gaining traction. This statement about Leopards delay telegraphs that they don't care about computers anymore. This will put a bad image on Mac OS X. They're sending the message out too early. People who realize this will bail from the Mac platform, developers will be more reluctant to move to the platform.

Apple had the Mac wave moving to their benefit. This announce will crash the wave. Microsoft has won yet again.

They should simply have announced that Leopard was delayed until October. That may have flown. But to publicly state that they value a PHONE more than Leopard disenfranchises the majority of the loyal Apple base. This is a VERY bad move.

I've been working and staying off the net until now and this is what I read!

I can't believe it but with all the news about Apple 'putting their eggs in one basket', I suppose it's all true. This iPhone better be worth it after all this. No wonder we don't see anything new on the iPod or Mac computers front. I think it's safe to assume that Apple will be keeping the current designs of their computers and installing Leopard on them. But you never know, maybe new systems will follow with the introduction of Leopard to make people upgrade. The iPod will probably exist in 5.5G design until then too. It's too bad for those who don't want the iPhone or want it but can't afford it.

Good for me, my year end is Dec 31, so I won't be tempted all year to buy! I can wait!:)

apple TV is delayed, leopard is delayed, iphone was announced after years of speculation and it's a LOONG time until it ships (and apparently isn't yet ready), mac pro and C2D updates take way too long, video features of itunes store are still not up to the equivalent of the music at the time of the launch of the music part, and on and on and on....

Apple, get on the ball. Trendy, cool, and always late to the party and f*ing up just doesn't cut it. Whatever happened to that glimmer we had with the intel switch, where things happened ahead of schedule, prices and features were better than expected, and updates were superfast (mac book pros before they shipped!). I sure hope the secret features are good and nothing gets delayed further.

The other thing about this that just seems like bad buisness: not only did they make the mistake of making a promise they couldn't keep (which you should NEVER do, it makes people so much more pissed than if you didn't make a promise at all), but also, they did it for a product that's enormously risky. Now I agree with those who say that publicity wise, it's better to delay leopard than the iphone (though they shouldn't have to delay either), but it's just an ugly situation to mess up a product central to your buisness plan for one that's totally untested and risky. Sure, the iphone rocks, but it has more than one potential achilles heel, and if it's a flop, this will look like a BAD decision.

I am kinda happy they pushed Leopard out some. The more
time they can spend on polishing the 64b Cocoa, etc. APIs likely the
more legacy cruft they can cut out of 64b side of the house... setting
a cleaner foundation for the future.

They are trying to pull off a lot in Leopard.

So does this mean that in October we can use Time Machine to bring Leopard back to June where it belongs?

;)

I'm trying to remain light-hearted about this news, if you can't tell... not that I even have money for a new computer or OS anyway... but my poor 800MHz G4 iMac is getting tired! It needs to retire to the land of music servers... poor guy.

RIP Macintosh 2007

Initial Thoughts,

Looks like Friday the 13th came a day early.

I'm waiting for the "Buy a Mac now and We will give you Vista-Clone in October"

Or why don't they just call it OS-Eleven

Boycott the iPhone, what a great idea except for its not offered in my country!

With some thought
And only a week after the 8-core Mac Pro Beasts (which I didn't buy, thank god), spend $4 grand on their lowest priority, what message are they trying to send?

If the iPhone flops (or doesn't live up the hype or its expensive price tag) Apple is in for serious consumer confidence loss (oh and their shares are going to slide).

And on a final note...
It's called hire more staff... what do you think the rest of the business world does with money?:(

If Leopard was being delayed because they simply weren't satisfied with it and need a few more months for tweaking, that's fine. I'd rather have a quality product than just getting something pushed out the door.

But to delay it by four months because you took people off of Leopard to get the iPhone OS done?

That's just not right.

Oh noooooo

My copy of 10.4 stop working and won't install anymore after the news was released. :p

Actually, I think this is good news. The main features needed to be released at least 90 days before they ship it and have a beta in developers hands for testing. You can always install Vista on your newer model Macs so you have something new to play with until October.

I am looking forward to the Developer keynote. It will be like the 3 Ghz speech a few years ago.

Gah, that means no new Apple products for me until October. We will have to wait for who knows how long until the iPhone reaches Australia.

On a positive note hopefully October gives them enough time to do some heavy testing. :)

A new *version* of the operating system.

The iPhone development can't be the real reason for the Leopard delay. That just doesn't make sense. Sounds just like an excuse to me so they don't have to tell us the real reason.

They let this out of the bag only so people will start buying Macs again in the mean time.

Oh, and October really means Macworld SF 2008. I mean how can we beleive Steve Jobs or Apple anymore???

There is mass hysteria going on in MR! We're all gonna die! We're all gonna die!

No kidding. Settle down. I would much rather have apple do the RIGHT THING and get both products right. Remember, apple is a big company, but it does not have unlimited resources. And the products we are talking about, Leopard and the iPhone, are both now essential to the company's long term outlook. And regarding resources, the particular resources necessary are necessarily limited. Apple probably does not have a bullpen of "idling" engineers with nothing to do. And these products are obviously very complex engineering problems. It is simple resource allocation. Also, while a delay in Leopard will cause consternation here on MR, a delay in the iPhone (for better or worse) would be BIG NEWS.

I also wonder whether the delay of Leopard will signal a delay in new hardware. For instance, a new iMac may be largely dependant on special features in Leopard (maybe.) We may see a long lack of new product intro's or even updates, if that is the case. My $.02

In my opinion, Tiger is far better than Vista, and currently too many people I know had to give up older peripherals and spend money on hardware upgrades when they purchased Vista, while all of the old printers and junk I used with my old Dell works beautifully with my macbook. While this is disappointing, I can't really say that I care that much. I'll just keep using Tiger and all of the great apps I already loaded my macbook with and simply upgrade my HDD get better peripherals and be happy till October, when I buy my new MBP. No worries.

I think Multimedia's gripe about the 8 core system being funky with Tiger is the only real legitimate gripe I can see. The rest is just the down after the sugar rush. Boohoo, now get over it.

Damn, it's like people have forgotten the horrendous hardware delays that plagued Apple until recently. I waited the whole summer of 2004 to pass before they released the iMac G5, and then waited another month for it to ship. Meanwhile, I was stuck with a dying Dell laptop running Windows ME and a nonfunctional keyboard.

Waiting for Leopard will be much more pleasurable, because I got Tiger on the very same iMac I waited forever for.

EVERYONE QUIT WHINING!
Heres to hoping the wait is worth it, and brings us a REALLY cool top-secret featureset that blows our minds away.

AMEN.
It's not that we can't use our computers without out. My 10.4.9 runs like a charm and is a pleasure to use every day.

Yes, I was looking forward to it, too, but I rather have an OS that is stable than a rushed, half-baked release.

A couple of things:

1. This is bad for hardware sales. A lot of people are holding off for something with Leopard on it. The longer they wait the more people wait.

2. No iLife until then means skipping an iLife version (iLife07). iLife 08 be better the best software out there with all the time they had.

3. If Leopard is feature complete in June - WHAT THE HELL do you need 4 months to test for?

4. Apple is losing out on people switching from XP. Many people might switch to Vista thinking Leopard is the only alternative.

Not entirely true. while only a point update, when Apple switched to OS X, they effectively decided to turn to point updates being major releases rather than full blown number changes. By your argument the OS hasn't really changed since 10.0 and that is way off the mark. From 10.4 to 10.5 even Core Animation looks to be a major change in the way the OS works.

However, I think now we should be looking to 10.4.10+, (which I had a feeling for anyway), and new models fairly soon. If they don't release updated specs soon, then some will be a year old or more by Leopard release, which would be crazy. Releasing a month or two before Leopard would also be crazy in my eyes.
