Anyone serious about buying a new Mac will now just go ahead and buy it. It would have been better if they had announced this a few months ago though.

I agree. Even though you shouldn't always wait just for a new OS, (I will however as I am in no rush for the iMac yet and might get one hell of a spec by then), this Spring thing was killing me.

At least now we have October, so that narrows down to when it will be released. Even if it is late, had they said Autumn, that would have been September-December and buying around that time would have been difficult for most. Limited supplies, money being tighter etc.

I don't think this is really the point. Apple admitted pulling engineers away from OS X to complete the iPhone. If they needed to do this then they should have hired more people/rolled back the release of the iPhone. Why not just delay OS X for an updated iPod? Once again, this is showing exactly where Apple's priorities lie.

In other words, a great reality check:

1 - NO SECRET FEATURES ON LEOPARD. Just forget it.

2 - Perhaps "Psycho" Dvorak was right after all...Apple will stop releasing Macs.

3 - This means the beginning of the end of the Mac era, in the same way that the Mac took resources from the Apple II development team in the 80s. The Apple IIGS was the best example of that...a great machine without support.

Therefore, Apple is poised to become the new Sony...without Macs.

p.s.: I still remember Sculley's infamous letter to A+, when he said that the Apple II would be supported "for years to come"...yep, the Mac is on the way out...so I will stick to my iMac G5.

Amen, Stop the Whining

EVERYONE QUIT WHINING!

Personally, I havent been all that excited about Leopard, it hasnt had that "Killer Feature" like expose or dashboard. Heres to hoping the wait is worth it, and brings us a REALLY cool top-secret featureset that blows our minds away.

Amen, Stop the Whining.

Personally, I'm glad Apple is focusing on making the iPhone a Killer device. The iPhone will insure another decade of fantastic OS X versions.

This is a SMART business decision.

People are taking this way out of proportion.

Vista delayed 4 years.

Leopard delayed 4 months.

And people are whining about the name change being related to this, which it isn't. Apple makes computers, all of them run OS X ('cept the iPod) ... if they moved resources from OS X development team to work on the iPhone, OS X as a whole will only benefit from it.

This makes me more and more glad that I bought my Mac when I did. I was kinda annoyed at the thought that the Santa Rosa Macs will come shipped with Leopard... but now it looks like they will come only with a very mild speed boost... no Leopard.

I know the answer to your quote :) without spoiling it for others, I will only reveal here that it has something to do with life and death :)

That has happened in the past before. Supposedly one of the reasons we haven't seen an update in FCP for close to two years now is that they pulled some of the team of FCP to work on Aperture to get it out of the door.

I do understand that people are frustrated, my point was that it is not as bad as it sounds. I was just trying to look at the bright side of things. 10.4.9 still works great.

I don't know what to do!!!, I have an old PC and I need urgently to buy a new computer, and I was to switch to Mac with the Leopard release in June, honestly I think that I if I switch now I wont have the best product! I'm very dissapointed!

Dude just switch. Leopard is probably going to ship with bugs anyways. Buy a Mac with a stable OS now. Upgrade later.

That won't be a happy crowd...

the crowd won't give a piss since they will mostly be developers and I don't know a developer on the planet that doesn't like more time. All Apple will do is demo their hidden features, something I'm doubting even exists, and they will go nuts.

PS- Seriously though. the hidden features thing. I'm betting it was a smokescreen by Apple for mess of an OS that wasn't remotely ready for even demoing. My money is on Apple wanting to having SOMETHING to go against MS before Vista shipped. Actually money isn't needed. With all the signage up hacking on Vista. Its just a given.

Good, I guess. I, for one, am glad to see that they won't rush a buggy release out the door too early. Looks like I was right about "not before June" (see signature).

It's too bad they weren't able to hire enough good people to work on both projects concurrently, though I can understand why. It can take a long time to get even the best new hires up to speed so that they're productive, and meanwhile part of your existing staff is dedicated to training them. Looks like Apple didn't do good enough long range forecasting to get staffing up to the needed productive level in time for these two products.

Plus, sometimes there are a few key people that simply can't be duplicated by hiring someone else (Jonathan Ive comes to mind on the hardware side, and of course Jobs himself).

Will be interesting to see how this affects Mac sales over the next 6 months.

Ugh, you really know how to piss off users and developers.

At least it will be released around my birthday

Actually many developers will likely be happy with this delay and have more time to develop against Leopard before it goes live.
Nah, it means more time until the majority of users are using leopard and longer until the poor developers can get their hands on leopard.

**** the iPhone! Im sorry but it has to be said, the iPhone will be only available to 10% of the world in June and how many people will buy Leopard over the iPhone?!

This says it all...

It is true... NOT a lot of people actually care about the iPhone let alone can get their hands on one when it comes out.

Then to some poster here...

Uhhh, wake up will ya... Apple Computer Inc, has always been about computers and not that it changed its name doesn't make it less a computer company.

And just cause PeeCee users all of the sudden fell in love with Apple, because of their iPods and iPhone... Should we forget those who actually use their hardware for work? Like Video and photography not to mention music?

Steve is spending way too much in one single area of the company and sacrificing everything on it... the iPhone might harm Apple more than Steve knows...

AND Leopard has been in the making for far too long. Quit those damn promises and tell us just how finish is it? If it isn't then we'll know...

I too want a solid OS but I don't want to hear that because of this damn iPhone which will be available for less than 10% of the worlds population when it is release, was actually worth the wait!

No sorry people... This is a big @&^%£ Up from apple, and I don't care how you twist it...

People who have been waiting to buy a new machine will have to wait even longer and the current update 10.4.9 isn't the best update it has way too many bugs.... Safari won't quit etc... And yes, I did everything by the book... Done so since 1990. Having worked for Apple, all I can say is that seeing this turn, isn't good.

I might actually have to call apple and have this confirmed.

Unless this is a surprise from Steve to blow away the investors once it is released, I still cannot see how this can be good in any other way that those who have JUST bought a new machine will be happy, and those who waited so long will be angry... Cause EVERYTHING is put on the back burner because of this...

I don't want to buy a laptop that isn't born with 10.5

This has better be a joke...

Leopard delay is not equivelant to vista...

I'm pretty disappointed with the delay, and will probably buy a mac over the summer wit out leopard. Some people are suggesting that this is no different than M$ delay in delivering Vista. However, I dont think leopard's 4 month delay is equivelant to vista's what 5 year (?) delay.

I guess previous rumors of a leopard delay until the fall were true, and that the following was wrong:
Jupiter Research's Michael Gartenberg reports that an Apple representative "confirmed the reports are wrong and Leopard is still scheduled to ship in this spring as they previously announced."

I've gotta admit, this puts Apple is an awkward situation, given how much flak they gave to Microsoft for their delays with Longhorn.

However, I guess it's a good thing that they put their pride aside and are pushing for a shippable Leopard, rather than one that would put them to shame with all its problems.

Sigh... here's to another six long months...

"Once again, this is showing exactly where Apple's priorities lie."

Rubbish, Apple only has one priority: making flawless products.

A delay at Apple also means that the product will be significant richer then originally planned, Vista will be totally humiliated. ( As it already is compared to Tiger )

Sounding mrore and more like microsoft....

well this absolutely sucks.

fine apple, go make money with your iPhone while i sit here on a windows box and suffer.

i do have a question tho: do you guys think that the macbook hardware will still be updated in or around june? because if so i think im still gonna buy one... now i just have to pray that leopard comes with freakin' i life so i dont have to buy that to... the bastards...

Haha toast 9 will be out by the time leopard is released :\

If I were a developer and my $ relied on this I'd be kind of pissed off.

Leopard better be amazing! I want ZFS and looking glass.

At least now we have a release date. :p

So the October release date rumors was right after all. May be Apple use this as an excuse since a lot of developers think that they won't able to release in June anyway
