No kidding. Settle down. I would much rather have apple do the RIGHT THING

Thats not the point. The point is that Apple should have put more priority on Leopard, and less on the iPhone. That would be doing the right thing.

How exactly are Apple's current computers "dated"? Does Intel currently have any faster Merom chips to stuff into the MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and iMacs? Nope. Does the Mac Pro not have the fastest quad-core Clovertons that Intel's producing, and well in advance of any other hardware manufacturers?

Heck, it feels like Apple doesn't even care about iPods anymore, considering how "long in the tooth" the 5.5G 30GB and 80GB models appear to be.

Get a grip, people!

The Mini has still not even been updated to C2D. How hard can that be? Is the Mini abandoned?
Upgrade prices for memory and harddrives on the Macbook and Mini are absurd. Apple is charging $250-300 for a harddrive UPGRADE where you can buy the drive outright in quantity of 1 for $100.
The iMacs haven't had a significant update for a good while.
There's been discussion of a larger Mini or headless iMac. Lots of potential products but nothing new other than minor updates in almost a year.

I agree iPods are also getting old. Apple is overstretched.

This, to me, has FAKE written all over it.

It just doesn't seem right... and although I completely agree that OS X wont be at WWDC... at least not shipped then this release doesn't seem right. It also forgets the:

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and will enter the mobile phone market this year with its revolutionary iPhone.

http://www.apple.com/hotnews/ If its fake, its one heck of a fake.

Poor Management!

Just shows where Apple's priorities lie. Instead of having an updated OS I can make mobile calls instead. I'm also currently using a browser that is starting to feel quite sluggish and unreliable in loading websites properly when compared to newer browsers (Safari). I won't be seeing a better one for another 6 months it seems. Glad I didn't buy shares either. Hate to think how many people will now be buying Vista instead.

HELLO THE SANTA ROSA IS STILL COMING IN JUNE
THAT'S SOMETHING (ESPECIALLY FOR THE CASUAL GAMERS OUT THERE b/c THEN YOU CAN PLAY FAR MORE ADVANCED GAMES ON A MACBOOK)

Damn I wish I had enough money to take advantage of all the people that want to short AAPL...

The stock will go no lower than the after-hours low. The extended trading market always overreacts to news.

Indeed, it is time to buy.

By the way, I don't know why so many people are complaining. Tiger is still two steps ahead of Vista and easily the most advanced consumer-oriented OS in the world. Leopard will just make OS X harder to catch. Be happy with what you have.

This makes me hate the iPhone even more. A couple of weeks ago I was all excited that "Leopard Still In Track For June Release"...

This really, really sucks, if it is true. Because of iPhone... sheesh.... shame on you, Apple.

For those who are all like "DAMN NOW I CANT BUY THAY MBP IN JUNE!!!!"

Yes you can. The lepoard upgrade doesn't cost much. Its not a big deal.

Anyone serious about buying a new Mac will now just go ahead and buy it. It would have been better if they had announced this a few months ago though.

My copy of 10.4 stop working and won't install anymore after the news was released. :p

Actually, I think this is good news. The main features needed to be released at least 90 days before they ship it and have a beta in developers hands for testing. You can always install Vista on your newer model Macs so you have something new to play with until October.

I am looking forward to the Developer keynote. It will be like the 3 Ghz speech a few years ago.

Which would fit in with a WWDC 2007 timeframe. Announce all features in June and ship in October, stable and feature laden. About the same time we will see Vista SP1 released and perhaps Apple can score a few points with "We care about or customers and wait till the OS is ready, not ship early and patch later."

If Leopard was being delayed because they simply weren't satisfied with it and need a few more months for tweaking, that's fine. I'd rather have a quality product than just getting something pushed out the door.

But to delay it by four months because you took people off of Leopard to get the iPhone OS done?

That's just not right.

The iPhone is of strategic importance to Apple and the better start they can give it the better. Leopard is a continuation of an existing product and not one at any real risk if it is delayed by a few months. So it is perfectly reasonable to put some key resources on its OS (which is basically Mac OS X) at the cost Leopard. Some folks are just hard to replace in a short term situation like this.

If anything this is better for 3rd party developers since they will have more time to work with a basically feature complete build of Leopard. Additionally the longer 3rd party developers have to work with Leopard the more bugs they can shake out of the system improving Leopard in the process. I know I have a growing list of bugs I have reported.

Speaking as a developer I am happy with a slight delay... as an End-user I would love to have Leopard ASAP but I also want a high quality OS.

Apple must be copying Microsoft. :p :D

It had to be said. If it hasn't been said already.

As for the justification. Bullcrap. Apple has been working on the iPhone for years. This is simply Apple arrogance. they don't want to admit they are hitting snags.

iPhone and AppleTV, being OS X products, may usher in a new era of taking key people from Mac projects for other projects! (And I'm betting future iPods will run OS X as well.) Yes, this disappointment gets my negative vote

First no new Battlestar Galactica until 2008, and now another 4 months for Leopard?

I can hope that October means Apple can aim "early," but my hopes will no longer be up.

Apple must be copying Microsoft. :p :D

It had to be said. If it hasn't been said already.

I haven't read 11 pages, but I'm going to guess it has been :D

Then again, Longhorn/Vista was originally scheduled for 2003 and finally reached consumers 4 years later after multiple delays--and with major announced features canceled along the way. OS X on the other hand became fully usable (and replaced OS 9 as the default) in 2002, right on schedule, and now it's the 6th release of OS X that has been delayed, once, by 4 months, with all announced features intact, and probably still long before the 2nd release of Vista, which didn't manage to catch up with Tiger's features anyway ;)

I was going to switch on June!!!

I don't know what to do!!!, I have an old PC and I need urgently to buy a new computer, and I was to switch to Mac with the Leopard release in June, honestly I think that I if I switch now I wont have the best product! I'm very dissapointed!

AMEN.
It's not that we can't use our computers without out. My 10.4.9 runs like a charm and is a pleasure to use every day.

Yes, I was looking forward to it, too, but I rather have an OS that is stable than a rushed, half-baked release.

I don't think this is really the point. Apple admitted pulling engineers away from OS X to complete the iPhone. If they needed to do this then they should have hired more people/rolled back the release of the iPhone. Why not just delay OS X for an updated iPod? Once again, this is showing exactly where Apple's priorities lie.

HOWEVER, this gives me back some hope: "We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their f inal testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. "

Doesn't sound like a professional press statement from a major company. Sounds like someone talking to someone at some random event. The tone is just too casual. I don't believe it at this point :)

EDIT: But seeing it's at Apple's site.... sigh....

Apple has today announced that the release of MacOS X 10.5 Leopard will be delayed until October due to the development of iPhone. Developers will be given a beta copy of Leopard at the Worldwide Developers Conference in early June.
And the next day developers will be leaking the beta copy onto the Internet for everyone else to try. ;)

dammit. another "i" product stands in the way of real apple stuff

has apple lost it or something?? everything these days is ipod. and now the iphone .... seriously, what the hell is an iphone anyway - a phone that does ipod style stuff and a web browser - whoop dee fracking doo!! . push this thing back ffs. there are a plethora of other devices on the market that do this.

taking your operating system staff of the leopard project to support a novelty item is just not right. osx is the main reason why people use mac's. get on with the job apple.

i want to say more but the censored "....."'s will make up most of the remainder of the post.

Here's what REALLY bums me completley:

AAPL stock dropped more that 1% each day for the last 2 days or so. For no apperant reason. Nothing was announed, except for some "good" stuff, like potential Beatles on iTunes, MGM in iTunes etc. etc.

So why did the stock go down? MANY PEOPLE HAD EARLY INSIDE INFORMATION AND SOLD QUICK!

This just blows.

And thus the beginning of apple not being a computer company but a gadget maker. Whats the next announcment? Apple sells computer division to DELL?

I bet someone on here my iMac that it wouldn't be out in April. I knew it. The OS I am using is as stable as anything I could want and I can only look forward to Leopard knowing that it will be truly awesome.
