Have any other versions of OS X ever been delayed? If not then :apple: is really starting to slack off. I hope all the leopard hype is worth what it promises to be.

IIRC the initial Mac OS X 10.0 release was delayed alot.
But that introduction was much more a huge "bang" for Apple than Leopard should be...
iCEO, aka dear Steve, was just getting a grip of things. Apple was on the verge of a Mac OS 9 >> Mac OS X transition, etc. Far more difficult times than now.

This delay was more of a choice.
Apple chose the iPhone release over Leopard. And, let's be honest.... rightly so. Apple have created a huge hype and probably made hyper-deals with cellphone providers, that it would probably have been near suicide to delay the iPhone release.

The other problem with this delay, is the (obvious) delay of Leopard Server. So much cool and necessary new features in 10.5 Server (iCal Server, Spotight Server) that makes this a must have for small(er) companies and are anxiouslay waiting for this release. Too bad this cannot be implemented during the quiet summer days.
We have to wait until the autumn now...

I was expecting this. Not surprised at all... Let Apple delay it as much as they want. Tiger is doing everything I want it to do.

Get out of here with your reasonable reactions to this news, I'm about to find the closest gas can and light myself on fire. THIS IS IT APPLE, I'VE HAD IT!

Agreed, with an Education discount Leopard costs 69 dollars (well at least Tiger does right now, I'm thinking the pricing scheme will stay the same).

Repeat after me....NOT EVERYONE IS A DANG STUDENT!

I'm so sick of people throwing out the student discount crap. I'm not a student. I haven't been one in 7 years.

So this is what we have in 2007.

1. Apple goes against their "usual" keep the mouth shut on products and demo's the iPhone before it was ready at Macworld 2007 an event that is supposed to be Mac centric. This leads them to delay Leopard because of item #2

2. The statement from Apple means that they are placing more emphasis on the iPhone over Leopard by stating:

"iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and (quality assurance) resources from our Mac OS X team,"

What! This makes no sense!

3. No iLife 07 or iWork 07

So was it a mistake to demo the iPhone too early? I think so
I think Apple is using the iPhone to distract from the real cause ... Leopard just isn't ready and they need to a reason ... just blame the iPhone.

Image how upset the people who paid for WWDC will be. Just at a time where Apple could have positioned themselves to really stick it to Microsoft and make inroads in the enterprise we get this news. I'm very disappointed and shocked. You can bet Redmond is very happy with this news as Vista sales will likely be better now that Leopard will be released in October.

So where's the focus at Apple? It looks as though the Mac and Mac OS X are not the top priority anymore. It appears that Apple is more concerned with iPods, iTunes, iTV, and the iPhone. I guess when Apple dropped "Computer" from their name we should have seen this coming.

This confirms one of my 12 predictions as having failed.

Confirmed so far: 3 correct, 1 incorrect, 8 uncedided.

Rocketman

sorry for my ignorance, but what are your 12 predictions??. I wouldnt know where to start looking... www.gooogle.com/search.php?"Rocket+Man's+12+Predictions" (thats not a real link, i just made it up)

Oh Noooos!!! :)

Edit: Does Macrumors have a caps lock filter? I typed the original in all caps but it didn't turn out that way. If so it would be interesting. I can't get exactly what I want to type, but it gets rid of a lot of caps lock typing idiots.

My first reaction was to be very disturbed that the Macintosh OS was taking a back seat to a cell phone. The iPhone is taking OSX into unchartered waters so I'll give apple a small pass just so long as this doesn't turn into vista...

Umpc

ok guys, here are a few little hints...

1. Intel is coming out in 7 days with the new McCaslin platform : new 65nm, 800Mhz Santa-Rosa based 'Core 2' processor which works with the X3000 GPU and contains a lot of power-saving technology. And already showcasing 4 UMPCs running Vista and / or XP...

2. Apple has been rumored to conceive a multi-device strategy since before MWSF2007, we were lead to believe this was the essence behind the new products release, and that only few priviledged individuals were to know. ( remember those apple employees rumor threads last December ? ). Now we have the patent pending official rumor to corroborate...

3. A stripped-down version of OS X or a new release ( Leopard ) capable to be ported to one or another device with ease would definitely require lots of re-engeneering. First from OS X to iPhone, then to any other Apple product. This kind of calls for the announcement that started the thread...

4. By 2008 the McCaslin platform will be delivered in 45nm flavour with higher specs and even lower power requirements; that's when your OS will run as if it was loaded on a 2Ghz Core Duo laptop ( but with better graphics than the Macbook ! )...

This lead me to believe Apple is planning to release / announce a UMPC by MWSF2008 running OS X and virtualization. Maybe they will call it a Business iPhone of sorts, while the candybar config will stay for the iPod minded buyers....

Is this such a big issue?

iPhone is revolutionary.

Leopard contains new features we are craving about - but we can live without them can't we? 10.4.9 still beats the crap out of Vista. Tiger is such a stable and smoothing OS that it doesn't matter that its follow up is going to be delayed.

iPhone offers a completely new style of phone. Completely touch screen with the best OS in the world.

If I had the money, I'd much rather get an iPhone than Leopard. OSX Tiger does EVERYTHING I need my computer to do plus much more. It is perfect.

My current mobile phone doesn't. I want a sexy, slick mobile phone with my favourite OS on it.

Anyone else on the same boat as me?

Well, personally, I'm blogging about it while I listen to Rage Against the Machine. I recommend you do the same.

pro users?

Well I think this shows where Apple's priorities are.

Very true, I think. It's really too bad to think that gadgets are more important than the legendary OS which give them their fame in the first place.

Please Apple, don't abandon your pro users!

That paragraph is like nothing else on Apple's news pages. I just glanced it over a bit, but Apple doesn't use the word "we." And as mentioned before, it's not in the RSS feed nor on the start page (apple.com/startpage) which leads me to believe it's a fake.

I hope it is!

I'm thinking back to the "Welcome to 2007, the first 30 years were just the beginning", I hope they didn't mean just a cell phone.

Nicely remembered! If that is what they mean, then they're not quite there. The iPhone is good, nothing really like it, but I like Japanese phones the most and always have done.

I wanted something computer related from Apple.

Wow, I've never seen this many negative reactions ion the board...Apple better make everyone happy otherwise there are problems. I bet the users on this forum constitute a significant portion of Apple's computer market. I don't know whether or not I believe the iPhone thing, but I wouldn't want Leopard being released being all buggy...
I wonder if they'll release any new macs before then? Looks like we wont be seeing the ultraportable MBP for a while...

well thats another 6 months from now. 6 months until they get any sales from me, assuming that a vista laptop doesn't entice me first.

This is a very bad move by apple in my view, a lot of people, myself included have been holding off on buying new and in my case first time apple hardware until leopard comes out. I'm also more likely to spend several thousand on leopard based hardware than an overpriced phone (its using dated technology except on the os and touchscreen which are not worth the extra in my view over a symbian touchscreen phone)
I don't want to buy a laptop which then requires me to have to pay extra to get the update which should be here just because they had to finish their iPhone which is not even available in my country!

OS-X better be bleeding worth it when its released is all I can say otherwise Apple is going to get one of the biggest share price drops in the last year. .

First of all, isn't it called the Santa Rosa platform? And it isn't being released in 9 days is it...

Second of all, MWSF 2007 was 4 months ago.

Gahaha, I see your grasp on reality is on par with the dude who is switching to Ubuntu because of this.
