I've come late to this news article but I just want to say, they're delaying Leopard for the iPhone.... are they ******* kidding me?? At the end of the day, its only a phone/pda and not even a feature rich one or anything astoundingly new at that! *Screams in anger*

Well, I guess I have to keep my $3K in the bank for another six months.

What upsets me is that this is yet another delay - I've been waiting for YEARS for a reasonable time to buy a new laptop.

Since 2003 at least.

First, there was no reasonable upgrade forthcoming because more powerful PowerPC chips weren't materializing.

Then, there was the switch to Intel, but native software wasn't available.

So, finally, we have Intel upgrades to the Adobe software, but new machines and the new OS aren't to be had.

I guess my dual-usb iBook will just have to run OS 10.4.9 a little longer. C'mon, you can do it boy! Just keep running a little longer...

Call me an ****** but I kinda hope your ibook dies. I mean really. Even under Rosetta Photoshop has been able to kick an iBook's butt since its introduction. Esp since the Core2's came out. Your justification isn't just sketchy, its outright stick figurish. What next? Oh well they are coming out with new displays in Jan '08 so I'll wait. And wait. And wait. And wait.

So how many people are still going to wait to buy a new system until Leopard is released?

I will be waiting......But the piont is I am not going to but anything else.

But I am still very dissapointed. Can only hope by the time leopard is released the hardware will have had a good upgrade to justify my wait.

One can only hope

I really really want to know if Sony and Dell users sit around on forums and cry and whine about how the companies owe them a new product, or how they are just going to wait for products that aren't even announced and only discussed on RUMOR sites.

Some of you people are taking the RUMORS about Santa Rosa Macbooks, etc way too seriously.

Go look up the word 'rumor' in the dictionary and tell me if the word 'facts' ever shows up. It's hear-say folks, don't bet the house on rumors and don't be pissed when these mythical products don't show up.

No offense, but this just *reeks* of the Vista delay. 6 months later?! I hope many of you Mac users will lay off the Vista crowd for their delays now. Leopard was announced how long ago, and how many fewer users will it probably have than Vista? Vista will have like 30 million more users than Leopard, with infinitely more issues/problems, but Leopard is the one that gets delayed this long? Bad Apple, bad.

Brilliant move... This time Steve will regret it

This would have to be the most stupid reason for a delay that I've ever seen. Putting a major OS on the back burner just because you want to get a stupid phone (only available to the us market) out of the door. What sort of company is this? We should all have read the writing on the wall when Steve declared that Computer is no longer an appropriate part of the name for his company. One point makes sense. You can't delay this phone because it doesn't really have that many new features in the first place. But to claim that you needed developers from your Leopard team to finish it off is just laughable. The world is waiting for Leopard and all they do is releasing a phone to the US of A. This time Steve is wrong. I'd bet my sould that this will result in a major PR disaster leading to more problems. This guy was hitting on Microsoft for not releasing Vista in time and now he's claiming that his company can't finish off their OS because they've been focusing on a phone instead. My oh my... They must have like half a dozen monkeys programming 24/7 for either a phone or an OS.

You have got to be kidding

I like how they start off the release with...Hey, the iPhone is great, and oh, by the way, OS X is delayed.

And, let's make sure there are no hypocrites here. Everyone that have MS crap about Vista being delayed should now do the same for Apple.

Or, let's here the complaining about how the Mac is being abandoned.

5 Months vs. 5 years... do the math...

oh well... that was predictable wasn't it, really. It's not the end of the world though. While I'm looking forward to leopard (and it is going to be an awesome upgrade I'm sure), I'm very happy with tiger right now, it's far better than anything else out there (I mean vista too).

I can understand that the iphone is very important to apple with all the hype they built around it.

I guess we're probably going to see another minor update for tiger, 10.4.10 until October.

iCarumba!

I figured since I was the only member not to reply to this thread well...

Didn't they just deny Leopard in October?

OK, How many are going to boo big Steve at WWDC?

EDIT: isn't it amusing that Apple's PR releases always show up on their site after every other news site has reported it?

That's pretty much driven by securities regulations. You cannot post news if you are a publicly traded company on your own website until after it has been published on the 'official' newswires. Otherwise, it is an inside trading issue.

Well, given the amount of time between the Vista release and the Leopard release, I think a more fitting line for the opening of WWDC is, "At Cupertino, we've already started our photocopiers!"

Utter BS.

This sucks.

But in a good way, it's a clear sign of where Apple is headed. In 10 years the Mac will be gone, and Apple will be selling phones, ipods, and other consumer computer devices.

I will buy a new MacPro soon, as I'm in need of upgrading my Dual G5 that has a blown processor. And I have enough invested in the Mac OS to make it a viable choice for the next 5 years.

But I have serious doubts over where Apple is headed.

The fact that the entire MWSF keynote revolved around the iPhone was a clear indicator of where Jobs is taking the company.

The fact that by the time Leopard ships it will be over a year late is another sign.

Let's face it, Jobs has made a lot of promises that he hasn't kept.

He promised that 3Ghz machine in one year... it was about 5 years.

He mocked the delays with "Longhorn" and promised 10.5 would ship earlier. Well, Vista is out, and we are still waiting.... and will be waiting.... shipping a year later than Vista is not going to score points in the corporate world.

Yes, the Mac is still a viable design and production platform. But I have serious doubts over whether it will be viable in 10 years. My purchase this weekend may well be my last Mac.

Red hot news!

Lets peruse some current BBC headlines, shall we?

Don Imus fired by CBS, NBC.
Afgan Bomb Kills Canadian Troops.
Kurt Vonnegut Dies.
US Lacrosse “abuse” case dismissed.
DNA settles Anna Nicole Smith Paternity Case.
Oil Rig Capsizes in the North Sea with fatalities.
Bomb blasts Iraq Parliament building with fatalities.
Cricket Match: New Zealand V Sri Lanka.
Pakistani troops are helping tribesmen fight militants on the Afghan border.

Man! You would think something as important as a four month delay in a computer operating system would get some “love” on the BBC…

Sorry to sound selfishly optimistic, but I'm really glad about having gotten my hands on a MacBook Pro (with Tiger, of course) last fall for $1000 less than retail.
Sorry to anyone who would greatly benefit from Leopard's features, though...

Yep. We are going to get mocked, and hard, and Jobs deserves it. He hasn't been keeping his promises....

My universal translator just crapped out. Again, this time not in klingon...
LOL :)

I was talking about thread-core affinity.

Which in a nutshell is the concept of the operating system attempting to have the same thread (think of it as a worker) run on the same core as it was last run on (think of it as having the worker sit at the same desk as he did yesterday).

...say you have 2 workers and 2 desks they could use to do their work. It makes sense that if they sit at the same desk they last worked at they may be able to utilize some of the papers, etc. that they had arranged at the desk the last time the sat at it. Operating systems without thread-core affinity would randomly place those workers at the available desks (say one works goes out to make some copies or eat lunch). This would result in the workers having to grab their documents from their old desk (actually a little more accurately from a file cabinet in which they placed copies of their documents before leaving their old desk) before they could start to use their new desk. This hauling around (copying) of documents (data) slows down the worker.

An operating system with opportunistic affinity would attempt to place a worker back at the desk they last used unless someone else happens to be currently working at it. This has a better chance of avoiding the worker having to haul around their documents.

In a complex multi-core system (8 desks) the desks are no longer all on the same floor (2 or 4 floors) with some desks on the first floor others are on the second floor (etc.) with an elevator going between them. So now if a worker gets moved around between desks they possibly have to use the elevator to get to their new desk. What is worse if more workers moving between floors means a worker is more likely to have to wait for the elevator since another worker may be using it.

An operating system that understood the topology (which desk existed on which floors) would attempt to keep a worker on the same floor if at all possible.

How is that for a crazy analogy :)

This is ridiculous. It really isn't that big a deal folks. Leopard will be better because of this move. I welcome that decision.
Everything Apple does is not good news.
Leopard isn't late because they're fixing bugs, its late because they moving developers to work on the iPhone instead! They could have done a quality Leopard release earlier. So in no way can this be a good this for Leopard. Don't blindly think everything is rosy.
