Please explain how a 4 month delay equals Apple not caring about OS X and dumping it. Please explain your logic here or lack thereof...I can't wait to hear this. I don't remembering anyone saying MS didn't care about windows anymore even though it was delayed over and over again!
Again:
1. Macworld keynote without even a mention of anything Mac related.
2. Computer dropped from the company name.
3. Mac OS X delayed, not because its taking more time. Its delayed because they move developers to a more important product, a telephone.
4. No or few hardware updates for Macs for a long time relatively to other vendors in the Intel world.

Apple is clearly stating that the iPhone is a more important product than Leopard.

I will buy the Mac that I had put off! Cant wait til Oct!

All the more reason that to NOT BUY A MAC until Leopard and hardware are released. You will have an old interface which will not be 100% functional on your existing hardware.

I will unfortunately speeden up and buy the Mac this weekend. I will not wait until Oct. I have already put this too long as a switcher from Dell. I am done for life with Dell and MSFT.

I believe Apple is the future....despite todays announcement and the fact that I really pissed off with the news!

As long as the iPhone is out by June...I'm fine with a delay in Leapord. I know many of you feel the opposite but that Phone is going to be AMAZING.
:apple:

Whoah there, Captain Logic! How does a product delay indicate a lack of value? There are two BRAND NEW OS X products added to the mix already, with a good chance of more to come.
That these new products run OSX is irrelevant. Do I ever see OSX? Can I develop software to run on Apple TV or the iPhone? Apple so far says no. They could run Windows for all I care. The user never sees it, developers never see it.

When reality is pathetic, drink some kool-aid.

This is like Vista getting delayed cos of Zune.
No it is more like Vista getting delayed because some key folks also needed to work on another variant of Windows (which actually happened... one of the major delays in Vista development was folks going to work on Windows XP SP 2 to improve its security).

These are Mac OS X folks working on a variant of Mac OS X (what Apple calls "OS X") that is being used on the iPhone. The iPhone has many new paradigms to deal with from small footprint to multi-touch input. Some of the work done on OS X will spill over into Mac OS X. Wouldn't you like some fun and useful multi-touch capabilities on your desktop system? Would make things like Aperture powerful and more natural to use.

Tiger Still Rocks

Yeah, it sucks, but Tiger still rocks it hard, you have to admit. It's a rock-solid OS, it's beautiful and it's pretty fast. I think people are really just itching for something new, something to fill the void inside. Go outside, romp in the park, build a go-cart, write some poetry, paint a picture, whatever. Six months isn't that long.

And why not tell me about upcoming computer releases? I really want a new laptop, but I've been waiting for news about this new MBP/santa rosa/robson flash machine. Will it arrive this weekend? Will the 15-inch MBP get a better screen? Will I just have to order a plain old MacBook and be terribly happy with it because it's still, like, nine times better than the 12-inch G4 I'm using now? STAY TUNED!!

Oh, and the iPhone's interface is earth-shattering and when it makes it onto your laptop you will explode with delight.

Shawnce, you're plain wrong. I guess you just haven't been around long enough to remember. Originally, it was slated to come out at the exact same time as Vista (Fall '06), even BEFORE Vista was delayed.
Sorry I am not wrong (been working with Apple since 1984 by the way). Apple's first official statement about Leopard was done at WWDC 06. The rest is speculation or off comments.

In fact before 10.4 came out Apple was making statements that development would be moving to around a two year timeframe between major OS versions.

When did Mac OS X 10.4 come out? April 2005. (some would say Tiger wasn't really out until 10.4.3)

I have been saving for a new Mini expecting them to refresh it in time for Leapord in the next 2 months, but with the delay to October I will find myself with enough money to buy a Mac Pro which I don't necessarily need. Oh well, at least they gave us an update on the status.

This thread is ridiculous. Yeah, YOU guys care about Leopard, but think about what the public at large cares about? iPods, and the iPhone. An iPhone delay would be WAY worse for Apple's stock price than this Leopard delay. So, while somewhat disappointing, I'd much rather Leopard be delayed and work better AND have the iPhone out on time.

Plus, this helps me spread out my Apple spending: DRM-free music in May, iPhone in June, Leopard in October. Plus I'm sure we'll see more features shown off at WWDC now, rather than having everything sprung on us at once. Devs have more time to prep with a more final build... all in all I actually think this is a good thing. Based on what we already knew about architectural enhancements I don't think there was any question that this was the biggest upgrade of OS X yet. I'd rather have it be guaranteed to work well.

I agree and I would add two things: first, look for Apple Cinema Display updates between NAB and WWDC (I am betting on NAB), and second, if the interest in the iPhone continues from the general public, it could create a halo effect for Macs and increase Mac sales significantly, especially since the iPhone is running a lite OS--I presume a mobile version of Leopard. Thus, while I have no real interest in the iPhone and while I really wanted to buy a new laptop with SR + Merom revision + iLife Leopard (no more years like '07, '08 now) in June, I can understand Apple's rationale. Consider the iPhone's temporary preeminence as a slow build-up to a potentially climactic event. Just don't excite yourself too much.

They can't release the launch of an EDGE phone

Any further delay now that we're already happily using a 3G phone would be laughable.

I still worry about the typing experience on the iPhone. I have a TMobile MDA, and any time I try to use even the keys on the on screen phone dialer with my thumb, I miss a key or two. And that's with only 3 keys on the screen.

On top of that - no access to my corporate email server?

Shawnce, you're plain wrong...it was slated to come out at the exact same time as Vista (Fall '06), even BEFORE Vista was delayed.

Nope...Apple said Spring 07 at WWDC, Spring 07 at MWSF, "On track for Spring", and then the announcement today. That's all Apple has said, whomever Macnn got their info from was just plain wrong.

It is really iPhone developers working on Leopard. Apple lied.

Even CNET suspects that the delay is possibly a lie.

It isn't because Apple needs to devote more resources to iPhone. iPhone was functional at least as a phone, browser, calendar, SMS, and iPod even last year when it was previewed. What more needs to be fixed? We SAW all these features demonstrated.

The delay is because the last seed of 10.5 was MORE buggy than the previous- with many critical errors.

Leopard is having major major probs, and Apple can't just come out and say that, or else it will scare people.

I wouldn't exactly say that ... personally I saw nothing out of line with typical variation between developer previews. This stuff happens when they start to expose / flesh out more of the feature set... more things you can poke at and more things that can break as a result.

Nothing is exposed at that level. You will have to download the source for XNU (the kernel used by Mac OS X) and look at ofsmk/kern/sched_prim.c and related code.

ofsmk is the MACH aspect of kernel and the ofsmk name comes from the codes lineage from mklinux which spawned from NeXT, etc.

Thanks, got it. I found thread_bind, but it is marked:
XXX - DO NOT export this to users - XXX

Which would imply the proper protections are not there to prevent bad things from happening if the function is used without careful consideration.

thread_select is only a few dozen lines long, and nothing unexpected is seen there.

Mach has been around a while, and it was not designed in an era of multiple CPUs; it was essentially a trail-blazer for the current era of 32-bit multi-thread OSes.

One interesting thing: It does take the logical step of trying to run on the previous processor if that processor is still idle; this works well as long as you don't have more runnable threads than cores. As soon as that happens, you go in to the pathological round-robin scenario that is killing the 8-core.

For real. What could they possibly put into Leapord that would wow me? I know make my mac 2 x faster. That I would be happy with. Or make safari faster.

I remember thinking the same thing back in OS 6. They've since done some rather neat things with it. Those are the kind of things I'm hoping for, major things none of us have probably ever thought of. That's the Apple I remember and love.

But the more this drags on with no updates, the more I'm thinking the best new super-secret feature will be a skin-able calculator.

Actually, that's what many within Apple and the developers ARE saying. They're saying that the latest builds were actually worse than the earlier ones, more buggy, more problems, etc.

There was actually an article on ARS that talked with an inside Apple source developer, and he said 3 weeks ago that "in it's current state, I wouldn't even buy it." That's pretty terrible, IMO. After that article, I knew it was going to be delayed, partially because the source said there was absolutely no way that they would make the June target.

Also, the whole moving developers over to the iPhone bit, I suspect, is a major lie. The phone was at least workable and has been for quite some time. Leopard on the other hand, has gotten MORE buggy over the past few months. I mean really, are a few developers moving over to the iPhone really going to delay the OS they've been working on for 2+ years? Come on, I'm with Cnet and a few other tech sites; I think Apple is full of it, and is using the iPhone as a scapegoat for the real problems they are having with Leopard.

Everyone, please settle.

I think we all knew something was up when Apple was only seeding one build a month on average. Either something huge was coming, or they were spending too much time on OS X for iPhone (which turned out to be the case.) Mac OS X is a much more exciting platform than Windows. People are still oohing and ahhing over their XP box they got for Christmas; a machine with an OS that's been hardly untouched in six years. Meanwhile, Apple's been constantly been releasing newer versions of theirs with more and more advancements. In the meantime, Microsoft just stores up all those features and waits another six years to release another major OS with all those features that everybody will be using for a minimum of another six years or so, and is also building that huge dam to prevent those pesky viruses and security threats. Tiger is probably the best OS in Apple's history, advancing the Mac OS moreso than even Leopard. While Leopard will have some great technologies like 64 bit and Core Animation, it isn't introducing any features like Expose, Dashboard, or Spotlight that change the ways we use our Macs.

Also, I have another topic I'd like to discuss. So, today, Apple said that the feature list will be frozen by June, and a "finalised" beta will be out by June, yet the actual release of it won't be until October? I have a feeling either some revolutionary new feature/technology/perhaps interface is coming, or the cat will come much sooner than we're told.

Exactly that was in the realm of basic / opportunistic core-affinity I was think about would be possible on Tiger ... I just didn't know it was already in place :)

Also since those checks exist they have a blueprint of locations to add in additional functionality... logic that could start to evaluate topology information.

Like I said I doubt they would update Tiger with more capabilities but it is feasible that they could.

Lol

Well I think Apple has more riding on this iPhone then most folks think.
A sucessful iPhone means folks will buy more Apple branded products(iPods and computers).
iPhone failure could signal people not wanting or disliking Apple products.

This is also a new market for Apple as well.
I feel Apple is adding things to the iPhone that wasn't added back in Jan.
Hell they might even be doing some hardware upgrades.

Since the new G6 iPods are going to be based abit on the tech in the iPhone. Apple needs this iPhone to work very well, so when the touch iPod pops up folks will say "This is just like the great iPhone Apple makes only better!"

I for one don't care, if Leo gets delayed. I rather wait, then be sorry 2 months from now.

Demos aren't real products! Don't be fooled. If Apple was close to finishing the iphone they would have pushed it out into the sales channel immediately.

If Apple says they diverted OS X experts onto the iphone project I believe them.

Their focus is on the phone. They are limited with quality programmers. They overstepped their capabilities. Therefore they announce the delay of OS X which to Apple was the lessor of two evils.
