Does anyone disagree with me? Seems to me that if the front-facing camera was just to take snapshots that Apple would have put it in a long time ago.
Well... on paper a front-facing cam may sound like a killer feature, but really... there have been smartphones like that for years, and don't get me started on the webcams embedded in all Macs for the last few years. It's great for deaf people, but among the hearing it's something like 5% who end up video chatting on a regular basis.

You may be thinking "hey, it's Apple. Remember how they got handheld browser usage up from 15% to 85% with the iPhone? They'll add some of their Apple magic and make video chatting popular, I'm sure." Right, except... iChat and webcams have already been a staple of the Mac world forever, and how's that panning out so far?

I don't know what it is, but there seems to be something inherently repulsive about people having to look presentable when they're on the phone, let alone always having to look presentable 24/7 should someone give them a ring. Being on the phone is something people like to do with the make-up off, their hair on end and breadcrumbs on their shirts. No injection of Apple magic will solve that one.

Seriously? Who can honestly say they "know" what the laws are? Politics stink.

I can assure you that Gawker media group has a legal team that is very capable of knowing what the laws are regarding property. Such information is very easy to obtain as well.

Ignorance of the law is not a very good defense and what happened in this case is so obviously wrong even without researching the relevant laws.

Good points about video chat. The thing is most people who use video chat do so with people they are close with and things like make-up and hair are less important. Businessmen and women who travel alot but still want to see their kids/wife would arguably love a feature like this in their phone, as would those who like more...um....risque conversations!

On a bright side, Apple now has loads and loads of feedback on this design. Maybe they did release it on purpose :D

Schiller: Steve? You there buddy?
Jobs: Yeah what's up?
Schiller: The eagle has landed.
Jobs: And?
Schiller: Well, we get some mixed reactions. Not exactly what we were hoping for. Flash was well received though.
Jobs: WHAT?!?!
Schiller: The.. the.. the.. cam-cam-camera flash?
Jobs: Oh right... Sorry for that. Ok, call Gary again... Say what?
Schiller: Gray.
Jobs: Gray, Gary whatever. He's going out. Sent him to the local wine tasting farm.
Schiller: We're running out of prototypes.
Jobs: What about that round thingie with that cute keypad we showed Ballmer last month? They are moaning for keypads forever now.
Schiller: Uhm right... Never mind, I'll look in the basement. Pretty sure we have some scrapes there.
Jobs: Right, keep me updated.
Schiller: Will do, bye.

Schiller: The eagle has landed.
Jobs: Oh.... er... right. Er... why don't we just kill all the nazis then?
Schiller: Will do, bye.

I would find it amusing if in June Steve pops out the new iPhone and it looks NOTHING like this prototype/whatever.

"Dual screen slider baby! 1080p resolution! Two cameras? HA! FOUR CAMERAS! Running full-blown OS X... IN 3-D!!"

.

Which is why they would not have gone public without being 100% certain they were safe to do so. They are boorish but not idiots.

I could argue against your stance, but I won't. It's just funny to me that what you see as legally wrong I see as legally right. Thank God for judge and jury!

Epic Mistake

Good Morning America had a little segment on the prototype. Gizmodo let them play with it before they had to return it.....

Umm GMA is in New York. If they transported this thing across state lines they are FUBARed. I don't even think Apple needs to press charges. They have committed a federal felony.

Note taking onto GMA is also conversion. Giz is using stolen property for its own profit.

That's true, but even so... the non-visual aspect of phone conversations is a comfort zone for most people, and video chatting is a whole other game. Noticed how some people whine about the fact that mobile phones makes you constantly available? Imagine what they'll say when another paradigm shift makes them constantly visible (well, it's not always on, but still). There's a big brother-ish creepiness about it all, even if it's just your kid brother calling.

There are also the strictly practical matters -- you can't video chat and drive (the texting-while-driving idiots are trouble enough, thankyouverymuch), you can't video chat and... well anything really, it sort of becomes a full body exercise even if you're technically only in frame from the neck up.

The iPhone might boost the popularity of video chatting a bit, but I doubt it will tear down barriers in some earth shattering way. I wouldn't mind being wrong, though.

The fact that this is on GMA should be certifiable proof that this is not some intentional leak by Apple. The narrative now appears to be completely out of Apple's hands which is something that such leaks are used to prevent.

It would be one thing for Gizmodo to run some photos of the device and then get a letter from Apple to return it as part of some PR ploy. For Gizmodo to take it on TV, however, demonstrates that Apple is not pulling marionette strings.

How was the guy to know that people were waiting for him? Wouldn't you have thought someone would have legged it with your phone by the time you realize that it was gone???

Just something for you to think about . . .

Common sense is if you lose something, you go back to the last place you had it and check to see if anyone has handed it in. The guy never returned even when people waited around. For the fact no one questioned where it was, indicates this was all part of the plan.

Who cares? By being so anal about security, secrecy and control you can see this heading your way for miles. Sooner or later something will leak and gets out of control. If this was the prototype of the last Nokia, LG or Philips would anyone care?

So I thought this whole ordeal was over and the hype was dying down last night so I go to bed and I see this was posted around midnight and next thing you know, 25 more pages!

This really could be one of the biggest leaks of the 21st century.
