I can't comment on the Mac Pro BUT I can add that I believe the accessories that come with the ipods/iphone etc (like the earphones, usb cable etc) are stinky as hell! They smell VERY toxic! when i opened my iphone 3G the smell off anything in there with the white plastic was terrible.

I also find that blank DVDs (or at least the ones i'm using at the moment) give off nasty fumes all the time and it's noticeable at close range. If i put one near my face my eyes will even sting....

very strange

I noticed a pretty strong "new electronics smell" when I unboxed my MP, but it wasn't nauseating or didn't smell any different than any other piece of electronic gear packed in styrofoam and plastic that I've ever unboxed. This sounds like whatever is affecting people is different. Of course it could also be entirely mental, like the weirdos who claim that wi-fi networks and microwave ovens make them sick.

HAHA this is such sensationalist crap. Digg - Newspaper says Macs cause cancer LMAO! and check out the comments about Mac users. i dont know if i want to laugh… or laugh :p.

and of course Apple are going to deny it. which public company wouldnt?
one that doesnt want to get their asses sued so hard they dont know wats wat......

either way, i can guarentee that apple is deffinatly looking into it. Seeing as only one source says this is a problem........

meh

If I remember correctly, benzene is heavier than air, so unless you're below your mac pro, or it's on your desk, there's not really a risk from benzene coming out of your mac pro. Not to say that it's great to have any source of benzene around, but it's not as dangerous as it sounds.

what? can anyone with a mac pro tell us what it smells like?

To be honest opening the box the first time is where it's at. The release of all the plastic and styrofoam outgassing is the ultimate high. I'll usually take the box in the basement to open it slowly. I'll slit the top lengthwise and insert a plastic tube to inhale for several minutes.

After that to be honest its all down hill. You will get some nice outgassing for a day or two as all the components cycle a few times.

The only thing I look forward to these days is when I due some serious video and she really cranks up the fans. But unfortunately its only a 5-10min period of inhalation

On a brighter note, I'm receiving a new set up from the IT guys at work next week. Although I may not notice any toxic fumes as I will be using Vista 64 in a parallel universe.

Man I love the French. Nothing but a back door lie to bash iTunes and Apple.
:apple:

My 2008 Mac Pro definitely has a funny smell to it. It smells like some sweet funky chemical that I don't recognize. I've had it since February so there shouldn't be any off-gassing. I called my local Apple service shop recently and they said they had never heard of such a thing.

On mornings when the windows have been closed all night it stinks up the entire room its in. I have bitched to my wife about it and even complained of feeling queezy while using it so I am not surprised at all to see this article. I guess its time to either call Apple again or just bring it in to the local shop. Hopefully its not as toxic as this article claims.

Earlier this week, a report posted to a french newspaper claimed that some Mac Pros emitting an odor could be actually be toxic fumes. An Apple spokesperson spoke to Macworld and stated that they have not found any evidence to prove this claim, but states they will continue to investigate it.

A strange startup odor has been noted by some Mac Pro owners on Apple's discussion forums.

Great! First they tell me that macs are made of toxic chemicals so I cannot lick the components anymore and now I am unable to smell it! With all my options blocked, how can I truly show my appreciation and physical love for my mac? =( I'll just sit here instead and admire the sexy curves of my mac mini from a distance. Look but do not touch.... just like marriage with my former wife. *sigh*

In all seriousness though can someone translate the article into english? I am wondering what scientific and hard evidence they have that says the fumes are toxic? It is sensational journalism and raising red flags before they need be nowadays that cause a lot of problems and I hope this is not another instance of that issue.

There is always somebody trying to find something bad about some product so that they can sue.

A Mac Pro without any failed parts will not release any fumes.

Quite frankly, if some french moron is continuing to use a computer that has a toxic smell coming from it, then that person probably needs more fumes. Personally, if I smell fumes coming from a computer.... I turn it off.

That was quite the ignorant post - well done!

Umm, how much benzene? Thing is that all sorts of things emit benzene. It's not like they just thought, "hey, let's add some benzene!" Benzene formation or inclusion would be far less surprising than some of the more bizarre organic compounds you might not expect to find and worry about. Question isn't if, it's how much and why. Sources of benzene are all around us. If you can't quantify and compare to relevant standards, then you are a hack, not a scientist.

This said, I did purchase a pair of shoes once that had a horrible off gassing smell. Who knows what they put into the "rubber" in these. Actual rubber production is sometimes more alchemy than science. That's what you get when products are made in countries with low environmental standards and low ethic to profit ratios. Wasn't there just that milk thing????

You'll be amazed how many people on these forums have been talking about "the new mac smell" and how much they liked it.
Possibly, but there are also other things that happen as a result of manufacturing failures -- plastics will emit an unusual / unacceptable amount of hydrocarbon materials if they were not cured properly. It's also not uncommon to read occasionally about limited batches of consumer products having unusual residual amounts of cleaning agents typically used to clean various parts of the manufacturing apparatus.

Most of the causes for an unusually high amount of heavy molecule emission from a product like this (when it isn't actually on fire or overheating at the moment) are along those lines -- manufacturing failures that are not indicative of design flaw and which can come and go.

So I wouldn't write it off immediately. If the evidence can be validated with a sniffer, then Apple will be able to date code it and identify the affected computers, and its wholly appropriate for them to be recalled.

Yup, and most computers are made in Chinese factories.

Hmm. A breeze in the room, or, surprisingly enough, a fan – usually within your computer – takes care of that theory.
