funny that...

I posted this in 2006:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/219863/

...about my new (at the time) Dual Processor 2.3 G5 and my concerns about IT'S odd smells...I described it as "Ozone" smell. As it was discussed more in the forum, it seemed to be less ozone and something else more indescribable...but clearly a different smell than I was used to. It concerns me still to this day, but I have to become use it and unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I rarely notice it.

Curious to see how this evolves.

Bought a new Mac Pro for home several months ago. No fumes. We liked them to such a degree that we bought a bunch for the office. No fumes. No smoking. Nothing.

Had an old hard drive go bad in my home Mac Pro. Fumes? No. Just swapped out the bad drive, stuck in a new one, took like 5 minutes to fix. No smoking.

Machines are running flawlessly, haven't rebooted my home machine in weeks. We use these Mac Pros lots -- not uncommon for them to be left on for many days at a time. Each sports three hard drives, 16 G RAM, and we are pounding on them constantly for work. No problems, no smoke.

Story is total and complete BS.

Ah, yes, because your miniscule sample precludes any and all batches and models from having manufacturers defects

To be honest opening the box the first time is where it's at. The release of all the plastic and styrofoam outgassing is the ultimate high. I'll usually take the box in the basement to open it slowly. I'll slit the top lengthwise and insert a plastic tube to inhale for several minutes.

This is the most genuinely disturbing thing I have ever heard

You Know What It Is?

Someone dropped ass while the laptop was sitting in their lap and the fumes from their butt got sucked up in the fan and blown out the back. They noticed it and had some hack scientist come in and claim it contained cancer causing chemicals.

You know those French.....

What a joke!

Well, my Mac Pro stinks. I can't say for sure its Benzine, but I can say that you are an idiot.

I'm not even French yet all this bashing is rather disturbing. No one likes their culture constantly insulted...of course, everyone's own society is perfect isn't it.

The article I read seemed fair (except for that graphic they chose), apparently Apple has had the report since February. I don't see how someone can sit there & bash the report without being there to experience the computer & see the results? Perhaps it is just a bad batch? ...or if its more than that wouldn't you want to see Apple fix it? I bet you Apple would want to know about it & fix it.

And for anyone focusing on just benzene perhaps you should read a little closer, it described a "toxic combination of gasses including Benzene."

To the poster who says benzen is heavier than air so its ok that this stuff is floating around near your feet....because most people don't put Pro on their desktop....give your head a shake. Very comforting.
I'd like to believe the article its an overreaction but I'd rather that than if it was a serious problem that was just swept under the rug. Be thankful that someone's looking into it.

There is always somebody trying to find something bad about some product so that they can sue.

A Mac Pro without any failed parts will not release any fumes.

Quite frankly, if some french moron is continuing to use a computer that has a toxic smell coming from it, then that person probably needs more fumes. Personally, if I smell fumes coming from a computer.... I turn it off.

1. I'm not trying to sue anyone, or Apple.
2. My Mac Pro must have had a catastrophic failure of many parts because it is pretty freakin' fumey. (Oddly, it still runs great with all those failed parts.)
3. I am not French.

My 2.66 MP has a "skunky" smell. It has subsided a bit since I bought it in Jan 08 but it is still there. I'm not too worried about the fumes since there has been no smoke or any other adverse effects. However, my son (who is four) has been sleeping in the corner of my office since about mid-March. At least he hasn't been fighting with his sister.

You know, there is a strange odor in new cars that goes away after a few months of use ... :p

I personally have no experience with my computers getting smelly during operation; then again, I don't recall sniffing my machines.

This post made me laugh so hard. Thanks I needed it.

Posted on a fumey iPhone 3G, must be my burned out 3g chipset. Still works like a champ.

I am french and seeing that the article is from "liberation" paper.. i would not pay ANY attention to it.
Their typical editorial line is very weak, lots of FUD on many topics, and definitely have ZERO expertise on IT subjects.
There are never in-depth articles.... should this come from "le Monde", or "Le figaro" this would be another story.
This paper is known for catchy titles and provovative articles, but never go in-depth..ever..

There were busted last year for claiming about knowing about the french president sending love text messages to his ex wife and stuff.
They were debunked and had to withdraw. This shows how "Serious" this newspaper is.

It has as much credibility as Sarah Palin talking about the Macbook Pro refresh..

man these articles are getting more and more boring... Hurry up and dig up some info about these new laptops :p

Apple Should Have Put Some Weeds Inside Their Mac Pros. Smell It Baby That's Why You Pay Premium On Those PROS. New Sticker Will Be Attached Not Intel Inside it should be "Weeds Inside". Lol!

Are you ten years old?

Weeds?
