"Ive said that one of Apple's goals with the iPad was to create a sense that the product is not oriented in a specific way"

Looking at the picture with the Apple pencil attached to a specific side...

What? You don't think this was genious? Now they're forcing everyone to upgrade, because they finally realize how dumb they looked, and how much they've been fooled LOL

The way the pencil charges and snaps to the iPad is awesome. I think apple looked at the previous way of using the lightning port and thought “what were we thinking?”.

It’s also nothing the competition haven’t been doing for a while and have been asking Apple to do it a long time ago!

...says the man who choose to put these displays with square corners into designs without square corners for many years.

lolwut??

That’s as silly as saying “if 8gb of ram is better than 1gb... why didn’t everyone use 8gb in 1995??”

Surely you must realize that rounded corners pressed to the edges as close as they did on iPhone XR & the iPads Pro this year, likely wasn’t feasible when the rounded iPhone corners debuted on iPhone 6 & certainly wasn’t possible when the original iPad was released, yeah? Further... you can picture that rounded screen corners matching the rounded casing corners, would make negative sense on a product that had a big chin housing the home button & matching top bezel w/ the cameras & sensors, right?

Your comment is the most nonsensical snark I’ve read.

As if cuttong away pixels that display content is some sort of magic we all have yerned for LOL ..

Did you look at the Apple Watch series 1 to 3 ? The MacBook Pro screens..etc. etc. so many examples of apple designs with straight edge display and rounded corners. Tons of examples of virtually no border designs too, makes no sense you're sticking your head in the ground like that.

Literally means nothing. there's no meaning here. it's roughly translated to "We like the look of rounded corners"

"is concentric Sympathetic to the actual encloser = We rounded the screen to match the case
"You feel it's authentic"... literally means "we think it looks good"
"it's a single clear product" ... means absolutely nothing.

That's the difference between a designer and non designer. A designer looks at these things through different eyes. I'm not saying its right or wrong but they definitely have a different view of the world.

Just like you could start talking about how incredible some car is, Look at the engine, the fins, listen to the sound it makes!! Where 99.99999999999% of people are like, does it move?

The design owes a lot to the Surface Pro. The sides, the pen, and even Windows Hello which preceded FaceID by 2 years and works pretty much identically. The keyboard case even gives the iPad the Surface’s kickstand, minus adjustable angles.

Microsoft really got a lot right. It’s a shame they’ve only been making minor upgrades for years now. And also a shame that their hardware isn’t very reliable. BOTH of my Surface Pro 4s broke internally this year. (One wouldn’t turn on, the other had keyboard connector stop working).

On the other hand, I had an iPhone X not turn on (had to be replaced) and the heart rate sensor fell out of TWO generation 0 Apple Watches in my house this year as well (one I can blame on citrus oil bug spray eating away the glue, as it also melted my official leather strap, but my wife’s watch fell apart for no reason). So maybe I’m just cursed.

That shows how arrogant Apple has become. No one knew they want that feature? The old pencil has been rediculed ever since it was out on the market and, if I remember it correctly, some poster in Macrumors has suggested the idea of side mag-attachment before, probably last year.

Do you live in some narrowminded apple only world? The surface pro has this magnet attached pen for two years if not three. Bravo on apple for copying surface features for the zillionth time. Type cover, 2:3 aspect ratio on the 11 inch, split screen functionality are some other examples of blatant copying the surface.

I understand the camera can only be so thin.
I'd rather the overall device be that minuscule amount _thicker_, with the benefit of longer battery life (what else would you fill the extra volume with? probably get 30-60 minutes more runtime), and have the back be _flat_.
AMEN!
I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

This blind eye to negative trade-offs in a quest for zero bezel (the notch) and less thicker than before (jutting camera on iPad/iPhone) shows Jony's lack of genius he's credited with.

Lol, you are VERY confused!!!

Not sure who or what you thought you were replying to...

What I had said was: now that, due to technology advances, Apple is capable of matching curved screens to the curved cases they’ve been using for many years now- they’re taking advantage of that ability.

Saying: “yeah, they’re doing it now.... but they never did it before!”, while factually accurate- is SUPER confusing as a reply to me. I certainly never said “why are people getting excited about this? they’ve been doing this for years”, or anything of the like. I really truly understand that this is a new design language- now across the iPad... the iPhone XR, & as you pointed out- the Apple Watch as well.

I guess you don't travel much then? Personally I would prefer one less thing to charge, one less dongle to lose and one less bluetooth handshake

Frankly your first sentence smacks of smug superiority. Maybe not your intention, but I'm calling it how it seems.

I travel some these days, have traveled a lot more in prior times, either way it's not relevant.

In any case....

It's certainly fine for you to prefer one less thing to keep charged up. Equally fine if I don't mind an additional item. Wired vs wireless headphones make minimal difference in putting together a properly set up travel charging kit.

As for dongles -- Have you had problems with the lightning to 3.5mm dongle falling off of your headphone cable by itself? I've not really used it except to initially check it out and mine seems pretty rock solid. If yours is falling off the cable and tough to keep up with, maybe you should get it fixed under warranty.

Not really sure what you're talking about regarding "one less bluetooth handshake". My stuff connects right up when turned on; takes far less time than untangling a cord (or unwinding one from a cord keeper).

Either way, go with whatever works for you. I stated my opinion and you don't need to agree.

If you look at the picture of the iPad on this story, the curve in the corner of the display is a little too sharp to look "concentric with and sympathetic to" the actual enclosure. I don't mean in any way to take away from the new iPad which is a fine looking machine and nothing really to complain about (besides price). I only say this to point out that the bull crap spewing from Sir Jony these days is so copious, you can smell it from across the pond.

And anyway, who talks like that. Every time he opens his mouth, i feel ashamed to let people see I'm using Apple products.
Exactly this! The elegantly thin inky-black border that should be flowing gracefully and unimpeded around the screen is being pinched mercilessly at each corner. Quite jarring to look at.

The S4 watch does it perfectly.

I really respect the man and what he has accomplished. I love his redesign of the new iPad Pro however a lot of common sense stuff like how the Apple pencil can now snap magnetically to the side of the iPad should have been done ages ago.

Also I'm sure I'm not the only who thinks he has done a horrible job with the current Macbook Pros. Beautiful to look at but at the expense of usability. Yeah I'm not a world class designer but you do not need to be a world class chef to figure out something is wrong with the food.

It’s funny how I don’t see this pointed out often. He literally have a voice made for nature documentaries.
You're thinking of the legendary Sir David Attenborough clearly. An expert in his field who unlike Ive, doesn't even come close to patronising his audience with vapid pretentiousness. Describing a magnetic attachment as a "magical feeling" is beyond parody. Cringe-factor off the scale.

The simple flat edge of the iPad Pro is also an achievement, something Apple was able to implement when the engineering teams were able to pare down the thickness of the iPad Pro. Ive says Apple couldn't have attempted a straightforward edge detail like that when the products weren't as thin.

You could never have had a flat edge on something as thick as an iPhone 4. Or a unibody Mac Book Pro. And it would have been totally impossible on an inch thick Mac Mini.

There are so many jaded and cynical comments in this forum. I think Ive and Apple deserve a lot of credit for this iPad Pro redesign. I for one will be getting one as soon as they are in the stores.

Mr Ive - Damned if he does {talk} and damned if he doesnt even though he probably has one of the best CVs in the world.

Always worth a listen if just for that sexy British accent :)

Isn't it a bit twee......."authentic" curves and design? Give me some serious productivity enhancements for that significant cost bump please.

Couldn't agree more......I cannot help but wonder whether Ive simply sees how far he can push this BS before being called out on it. The law of diminishing returns has applied to his external designs for a long time. The internals, where the true magic happens probably has the square root of bugger all to do with Ive's team. I would really like to know if Ive understand the detail of the internals and the software that are contained in the pretty boxes his team (not he) designs.

I mean, I wasn't suggesting he use round displays before they were feasible... I was suggesting that if he was so 'disappointed' in how square-cornered displays looked in the round-edged devices he designed, that he had the option to put the square-cornered displays in square-corned devices.

I'm not going to comment on his skill as a designer

but whenever he speaks, holy crap. it's excessive hyperbolic buzzwords out the wazzooo. trying to break down and understand what he says is a nightmare as most of it generally just sounds like "I do good stuff" in fancy wording.

there's so much... fluff when he talks that it distracts from getting any real detail out of him. He's either a master at it, or maybe he's just one of those type whose not great at speaking his mind.

this quote:

Literally means nothing. there's no meaning here. it's roughly translated to "We like the look of rounded corners"

"is concentric Sympathetic to the actual encloser = We rounded the screen to match the case
"You feel it's authentic"... literally means "we think it looks good"

disagreed. he's talking as a designer. i find it informative.

"You feel it's authentic"... literally means "we think it looks good"
you're using the word "literally" wrong. and it doesn't mean "we think it looks good". i have an indian restaurant near me that tastes authentic. it doesn't mean i think it tastes good.

"it's a single clear product" ... means absolutely nothing.

he's contrasting against the first iPad where the screen component felt as if it was purchased as an off the shelf product and the case was designed around it.
