What would be the difference between facetime and ichat?

Can you use iChat with the iPhone 4 or iPod 4? What kind of question is that? The point is to have iOS devices be able to video chat with mac computers with isight camera.

That's my question - I'd really like to stream stuff from my ATV to my iPhone.

The stream on the ATV is just that, there is no local storage (I suspect a small hard drive for buffering) so although it might be theoretically possible to stream via the phone, you won't be able to physically transfer and store data from the ATV box.

Streaming content from my iMac to the iPad would be awesome though, especially as my iPad is 64GB and my mac is 2 TB (plus external) and my music collection is nearly 1TB.

Printing and folders... Woopty do.

While I agree when the iPad was released to keep a similar UI was the best decision, I think the time has come to step it up. The same iPhone UI and layout is NOT appropriate or the best usage of iPad's almost 10" screen. It's getting old and I feel like this layout is made for senior citizens. From the weird spacing with the unlock screen, to all the Apps spread out.

What about something 3D? What about widgets? What about something feature rich like bumptop? (I'm not saying this solution, but this is an example of something RICH)

Interactive. Engaging. Feature rich.

I've had it since the day it came out... and I'm bored, man. :(

Sell it then. You knew what it would do when you bought it. It's about to do even more (for free). You don't like it? Then lose it. Seems like you have a short attention span.

EDIT: Just had a thought. Using the same logic, do you think those people with 12 core mac pros should have a different OS to those on a mac mini also, or should it have more bells and whistles just because it can?

I will upgrade as soon as it is jailbroken but not a minute before

Why? You don't own one, so you don't know what it can do - you just have perceptions. What will jailbreaking bring you that could possible prevent you from buying the device until it is 'hacked'?

Does this also allow me to stream audio/video/photo's from my iMac to my iPad? I'm not interested in streaming stuff from my ipad to my tv.. It doesn't make sense.. Now, streaming stuff from the net or your local (personal) storage to endpoint devices like (apple)tv, i-pod-pad-phone makes sense..

It doesn't make sense to stream content from your 10" screen to your 50" screen in the living room? Really?

listen to slacker or pandora while reading your email?

It'll print from a printer connected to the TimeCapsule, Airport Extreme and Airport Express, of course.

I know that with 100% certainty.

It should print to a printer connected via USB to a mac on a wireless network. That's the setup I have at home. I'm able to print wirelessly from my MBPs to a printer connected to my MP. I don't see why the iPad should be any different than a MBP in this scenario.

That's the killer feature? Why not listen to your itunes collection while reading your mail?

If slacker, pandora, spotify release apps (thought spotify already had one?) then from this update with multi-tasking your wish is granted...

Agreed. I think the reason for this only coming to market now is that something needs to be put in place for windows users and those with wireless/blue-tooth printers. Generic drivers, testing, working the manufacturers, testing on windows networks etc. etc. And of course you currently can connect a printer to express, airport base station and print in that way...

Hummm.... not so sure about that... competition is heating up and it would be almost a year. Plus Apple does have a habit of updates in this time frame, so it would make sense that 4.2 would coincide with an iPad 2.0 update too. I would think a simple camera and USB connection would be in order.

Almost a year? How do you figure? In November it will be 7 months since launch.

I think the coolest scenarios with AirPlay are:

- I come home (or to a friend with AppleTV) and can show of some photos from my iPhone on his/my TV without syncing them first or using any cables. Because Apple wants other device companys with Airplay on board, he/I don't even need an AppleTV. Just a compatible device.

- Other scenario: I'm watching a movie while having dinner on my iPad. Then go to the living room and switch the running movie directly to the big TV. Half an hour later, I decide i'd rather go to bed and finish the movie there. I grab my iPad and switch the running movie to the AppleTV in the bedroom.

How cool is all that? Apple is really making a StarTrek like interaction with technology a reality. And some tech in iPhone/iPad makes StarTrek look outdated even today :)

Yes it will do that. I can assure you that a 100%, too.

Listen people: Just because I told you something will absolutely happen doesn't mean I tell you everything else will not work, okay?!

Wireless printing is important but has to be easy. I'm concerned it will work well only with printers made in the past year or two and not do so well with office printers. By office printers I mean the large multi function copier/printer/plus machines with normally dedicated IP's but still seem to run on drivers made for OS9 if at all for the Mac.

Apple also needs to expedite improvements to Pages. Frankly, don't understand why MS hasn't rushed out a scaled down Word. Sure, it isn't running on Windows but Word is still a cash cow and this is one new platform people would pay for - and more than just $5. Of course it would cement the iPad as a viable platform but wouldn't stop MS from trying to create a competitive product. :D

because i'd rather rent music for $50 a year than buy it. at almost 100GB it's too much to listen to all of it anyway.

the ipad is a $500 to $1000 computer. the $299 toshiba laptop i bought as a gift for someone a few months ago can do a lot of things the iPad can't. and apple is taking way too long to release updates

They should have just added DLNA support

Airplay and facetime are both being published as open standards and apple have stated intention to get as many people using them as possible in as many devices as possible. Bonjour is freely available for mac and windows. Printer drivers will probably be GIMP based (more open source)...

netflix does this already

I see what you're saying. I'm just bringing up that I think it has so much more potential, do you agree? Do you agree the interface currently on display is the best use of the space?

I was expecting first 6 months to carry same layout to attract people, then upgrade it. Give it the bells and whistles. Shine it up to compete.

Yeah, but netflix is kinda really only available in some very small part of the world. For the rest of the world, this is big news.

We have much, MUCH, MUCH better and faster networking in many countries over here in Europe than you people in the USA do have. But unfortunately no netflix :-(

Wireless printing and folders should be really useful as well as the multi-tasking.

Folders are not to be confused with file system access, right? Folders are just ways to store apps on the main screens.

We still really need access to saved documents to make the iPad a real business option.
